Movie synopsis
Produced by Judd Apatow and co-written by Seth Rogen--both of 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN and KNOCKED UP fame--SUPERBAD is the story of two horny teenage geeks looking to lose their virginity before college. Seth (Jonah Hill) and Evan (Michael Cera) are hoping to end high school on a high note, and when one of their crushes (Emma Hill) invites them to a graduation party, the boys are ecstatic. That is, until they become responsible for supplying the party with alcohol. They hurriedly concoct a scheme to use their friend Fogell's (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) horrendously fake ID, but trouble soon arises when Fogell becomes the victim of a liquor store robbery. The cops (Rogen and Bill Hader) show up, and the evening quickly disintegrates into a hilarious mess of misunderstandings, crackhead sing-alongs, and beer mixed with laundry detergent.Hill is a riot as the wild-haired and foul-mouthed Seth, and Mintz-Plasse is great fun as the uber-geek Fogell. But Michael Cera (formerly of ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT) steals the show as the sensitive and levelheaded Evan. His oddball line delivery and excellent comic timing make for some of the most bizarre but best moments of the film. The sexual humor can be pretty graphic at times, which is no doubt what earned the movie its R rating. Yet, despite gross-out jokes involving menstrual blood and penis drawings, SUPERBAD somehow manages to fly far above frat-boy, AMERICAN PIE-style humor. This is partly due to the comedic skill of the actors, but also because the characters--silly and absurd though they can be--are so well-written. Watching these bungling outcasts is a vivid reminder of the horrific lows and supreme highs of high school life, and their antics rather poignantly capture how age 18 can indeed be super bad, but also super good.

Editorial reviews

3.5 stars out of 4 -- "SUPERBAD is superfun across the board....It helps that the fun doesn't stop. It helps even more that the pitch-perfect script doesn't step out of character for a joke."
Rolling Stone - Peter Travers (08/23/2007)

"Apatow directs with an adult understanding of and affection for teen hormonal rhythms....SUPERBAD is cute if you like guys who aren't even remotely bad..." -- Grade: B
Entertainment Weekly - Lisa Schwarzbaum (08/31/2007)

"It's funny, but there's something meaningful going on....[The film] has at its core a certain verisimilitude that is endearing -- even sweet."
Box Office - Tim Cogshell (09/01/2007)

3 stars out of 4 -- "[A]bsurdly comic. Gross-out humor abounds....Side-splitting laughter, along with some powerful cringing, are likely to be audiences' dominant reactions."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (08/17/2007)

"[S]weetly absurd....[The] setups and camerawork serve the characters unobtrusively, as do the homey production design and costumes."
New York Times - Manohla Dargis (08/17/2007)

4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] rapid-fire gag machine....SUPERBAD is a relentless rib-assault that sure-footedly blends gross-outs, flashbacks, fantasy asides and a full quiver of zingers."
Total Film - Matthew Leyland (10/01/2007)

4 stars out of 5 -- "Think AMERICAN GRAFFITI meets AMERICAN PIE at the crossroads where John Hughes meets John Landis....It's embarrassingly funny..."

"[A] raucous party movie....The picture is dominated by three plucky young actors."
Sight and Sound - Ryan Gilbey (11/01/2007)

"Wide-eyed and sincere as it is hilariously, unrepentantly profane, the movie aims to express what it's like to stare down the barrel of your first foray into adulthood, and it's not afraid to be honest about it."
Los Angeles Times - Carina Chocano (08/17/2007)

4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] very crass but perfectly judged comedy with a heart of gold, and the leading triumvirate of Cera, Hill and Mintz-Plasse are absolutely priceless."

Outstanding !! Yet Another Newly Inducted Classic !!

Review For: Superbad (DVD, 2007, 2-Disc Set, Special Edition; Unrated; Extended Cut)

'Superbad' is "Supergood." We have been graced with another Judd Apatow-produced raunchfest; with the truth of the way-above-average teen comedy far from disappointing. A movie arriving on a tide of comic enthusiasm.
'Superbad', which was directed from Greg Mottola (The Daytrippers) from a loquacious script by 'Knocked Up' star Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, has inumerably funny moments; so many in it's first acts alone. It's also blessed with a trio of superb comedic performances by its young leads that should secure them each long and healthy acting careers.
The film has a dearth of truly original ideas. It's a picture that seems overly in love with every last one of its comic bits; whether they're amusing or merely nostalgic. Rogen and Goldberg first wrote the script when they were teens and it's clearly jammed with autobiography (they even name their leads Seth and Evan), and it shows that Mottola and Apatow did quite the "extra" cherry-picking to keep things moving swiftly as they always do.
For Apatow, that's no great surprise, considering his last two efforts (as Writer/Director), 'Knocked Up' and 'The 40-Year-Old Virgin', brought a package filled with big-huge, audience-friendly laughs.
While it's being touted as this decade's 'American Pie', 'Superbad' holds a one-day setting; making it more like a genitalia-obsessed 'American Graffiti', spiked with a boatload of cheerfully vulgar chatter. The movie follows a pair of childhood buds — the chubby, volatile, sex-crazed Seth (Jonah Hill) and the gentle, Dartmouth-bound Evan (Arrested Development's Michael Cera)— on a knuckle-headed mission to lose their virginity before senior year ends.
Along with a third pal, the intrepid nerd Fogell (scene-stealer Christopher Mintz-Plasse), these high schoolers muddle their way through a wild and unique series of obstacles en route to a cool kids' party where said "virginity loss" seems like a sure thing.
On this wacky journey, parts of Fogell's nerve-wracking assignments are to score the evening's booze which provides some major guffaws. The film gets so much mileage from this goofball's fake ID, which identifies him as a 25-year-old Hawaiian resident named "McLovin", it's practically its own character.
Dually successful are the pair of assinine Cops; played by Rogen and SNL's Bill Hader, who endlessly intersect with Fogell. These so-called Law Enforcers are so irresponsible you hope it'll turn out they're not Cops after all.
On the flip side, as the adorable classmates who horndogs Seth, Evan, and "McLovin" each set their sights on, Emma Stone, Martha MacIsaac, and Aviva are ideal, with MacIsaac's drunken seduction of Evan a go-for-broke treat.
At the film's core is a poignant message about teen male friendships that smartly balances the bawdy nuttiness that surrounds it. It's a testament to Hill and Cera's acting abilities that they pull off their squishy final moments together as nicely as they do.
If they're not best friends in real life, you could've fooled me.
5-Star A++++
Guaranteed Success !!!! Extremely Fun !!!!

Superbad -- Sure to be a Super Cult Classic

Jonah Hill (Knocked Up) and Michael Cera (Arrested Development) have one last shot at popularity in the very funny coming-of-age comedy "Superbad". Seth (Hill) and Evan (Cera) are lifelong best friends who really want to lose their virginity before heading to college. When they are invited to the year's biggest party, the boys use their friend Fogell's (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) new fake I.D. to score some alcohol for the party but their plan soon turns to a madcap night of unpredictable and outrageous situations. "Superbad" is an uproariously funny teen comedy from the creators of "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" and "Knocked Up". The raunchy teen comedy delivers a well paced storyline, some side-splitting moments and memorable comic performance. Seth Rogen (Knocked Up) and Bill Hader (SNL) are hilarious as two incompetent police officers. "Superbad" received overwhelming positive reviews from US critics and became one of the year's highest grossing comedies with over $130 million nationwide.

If you've enjoyed "Superbad" in theaters, then I strongly recommend checking out "Superbad" Unrated Edition. The raunchy teen comedy is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen format with more unrated footage that wasn't included in its theatrical release. The picture quality is surprisingly good with no obvious flaws. The 5.1 Dolby Digital sound is clear and well balanced. Among supplemental material, the DVD includes 8 minutes of deleted scenes, trailers, a short gag reel, "Cop Car Confessions" and "The Making of Superbad" featurettes, an exclusive sneak peek of the upcoming comedy "Pineapple Express" and an audio commentary with director Greg Mottola, production crew and cast members. Overall, "Superbad" Unrated Edition scores an "A".

Hilarious film...

Review For: Superbad (DVD, 2007, 2-Disc Set, Special Edition; Unrated; Extended Cut)

This film is now referenced for its numerous catch phrases. It is not recommended for children due to its sexual theme. It has a great retro soundtrack and continues the run of irreverant comedies that started with The 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up. Put in a mix of talent like co-executive producer-writer-star Seth Rogan, co-producer Judd Apatow, director Greg Mottola and actors Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Bill Hader and the now infamous Christopher Mintz-Plasse, better known to pop culture as McLovin, and Superbad becomes a modern classic. But, enough with the name-dropping. This is the two-disc unrated extended edition and has a huge collection of special features including an original table read of the script made back in 2002. I first saw this on a rental DVD a few years back and saw the two-disc version and the rest is history.

•:*¨¨*:••:*¨¨*:•.-:¦~LOVED~¦:-.•:*¨¨*:••:*¨¨*:•.-:¦~DVD

Let me just start of saying: This is the best movie of the year. I loved this movie from five minutes into it. Like I have said in my reviews of "Ratatouille", and "Alpha Dog", both of which you should check out my reviews of, I don't give movies the 4 star rating often at all. Especially this year which I have only given out 3 4 star's. "Ratatouille", "Alpha Dog", and "Superbad". This is number 1 on my greatest movies of the year list. I do not laugh often at movies, but this one was funnier than "Hot Rod", which also very good. One of the funniest parts is when the character played by Jonah Hill, who is a great young actor, starts explaining about he used to draw pictures of penis's, and had an obsession for it, until one day the pictures were found after falling out of his lunchbox, in which it shows a flashback to the whole thing, and shows the most penis's I have ever seen drawn in my life, some in costumes, some not, but not getting of subject too much. McGlovin, or however the heck you spell it, is quite possibly one of the greatest characters in the history of comedy. Everything he does in this movie is F -ing funny. Another funny scene is when McGlovin, and the two cops get drunk, and then he shoots, and blows up the cop car. This movie is definitely not for kids any younger than me (I'm 14). But I have a wide love and knowledge of movies, and I know masterpieces when I see them. A true comedy classic. The best film of the year "Superbad", is a masterpiece. I give it "4 out of 4 stars." Check out my other reviews as listed earlier, including "Hot Rod".

Not as Funny as Expected

I loved the cast, everyone is great - Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Seth Rogen, everyone!
This movie I found to be kind of disappointing. Except for the cops and a character named McLovin', I found this movie to be kind of boring and a little drawn out, like they were trying way to hard to be funny.
After watching movies like Knocked Up and 40 Year Old Virgin, I expected much, much more from this movie and was disappointed.
To be perfectly honest, I felt it was a big waste of time and talent for this incredible cast.
I would recommend watching this once, you HAVE to get to know McLovin and Bill Hader and Seth Rogen as the cops are fantastic! See if your friend can loan you their copy, or go rent it.
