The point of the Super Smash Brothers series is to provide wildly fun fighting action without all the demanding timing tricks or memorization, so the controls are a snap. Each character has a punch button and a special moves button, which when combined with very simple directional movements result in a surprising array of clever attacks. The levels are wildly inventive, the fancy power-ups ensure lots of crazy action, and the variety of characters is staggering. Up to four people can play at once and the game has full support for old Gamecube controllers, so you might not have to shell out the money for extra Wiimotes.
For the most part, Brawl doesn't tamper with the Super Smash Bros. formula. The graphics aren't noticeably better than they were on the Gamecube in Super Smash Bros. Melee, but there are enough new levels and characters to keep this from feeling like a rehash. New to Brawl are a bunch of over-the-top finishing moves made accessible by catching an elusive floating power-up. Whereas Mortal Kombat had you ripping out your victims' hearts, these are all in good fun. Kirby cooks up his opponents in a stew, Star Fox mans a huge tank, Metroid's Samus dons her famous suit, and Pikachu goes high-voltage haywire.
In addition to the flexible arena fights, Brawl has tons of challenges and enough unlockables to keep completionists happy for weeks on end. The new story mode is perfect for some easygoing solo or co-operative gameplay. It's a cross between a fighting game and a traditional side-scrolling platformer in the style of Mario Brothers. Unlimited continues ensure you'll never be confronted with a 'Game Over' screen, and elaborate cutscenes keep the plot moving, introducing different characters and new settings. This is actually a great non-competitive way for players of different skill levels to enjoy Brawl and should be an ideal way for parents and children to play together.
Also new is online multiplayer. Nintendo has demonstrated how smoothly this can work on their handheld DS, but now the Wii gets the full-on treatment. It's simple to go online and jump into lag-free games, although you still need to use Nintendo's wonky 'friend code' matching feature to find people to play. There isn't much in the way of goals, ranking, or community features, but the ability to play against online opponents gives Super Smash Brothers Brawl nearly unlimited replayability.
Not like it needed help. Considering how much content you get before you ever even go online, this is easily one of the most generous, gratifying, and fun games you can get for the Nintendo Wii. Super Smash Brothers Brawl is nothing short of a smashing success.
There are video games that try to make you cry. There are games that gross you out. There are games that tell a sweeping story. There are games that make you think seriously about the world around you.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which was released by Nintendo this week, is none of those. Brawl is about one thing: simple fun. And that’s good enough. In fact, it’s so good that Brawl will almost surely be one of the top-selling games of 2008 and may become the best-selling game yet for Nintendo’s popular Wii console.
It is certainly the most anticipated game released this year (at least until Grand Theft Auto IV comes out next month, but G.T.A. is aimed at an entirely different audience). Thousands of fans, disappointed after the game missed its original release date in December, have flocked to advance tournaments and demonstrations in recent months. Last Sunday, GameStop, the major game retailer, held Brawl tournaments at thousands of its stores. (The regional finals are this weekend, with the national finals next month in San Jose, Calif.)
In some ways, Brawl is a throwback, a gamer’s game. The successor to the original 1999 Super Smash Bros. and 2001’s Super Smash Bros. Melee (which has sold more than seven million copies for Nintendo’s GameCube), Brawl is all about jumping, spinning and unleashing various attacks to knock your opponent — whether human- or machine-controlled — off the screen.
The secret sauce in the Smash Bros. formula has always been its diverse range of characters taken from other game franchises. Even companies outside Nintendo have seen the value of licensing their famous characters to the Brawl series. If you like console games, Brawl is like having Luke Skywalker, James Bond and Indiana Jones all in one (impossibly improbable) movie.
Brawl’s roster reads like a Who’s Who of Japanese console stars. It includes Mario, Princess Peach, Zelda, Link, Donkey Kong, Pikachu (from the Pokémon series) and Samus Aran (Metroid). Perhaps most interesting, it also includes major characters from outside Nintendo, like Sonic the Hedgehog (from Sega) and Solid Snake (from Konami’s Metal Gear series).
In their own games, these characters are central and often engaged in deep stories. In Brawl, they are reduced to slightly different packages of teenager-friendly combat moves. It’s a bit like seeing Gandalf as a sword-and-staff-swinging melee machine (as he has been in some Lord of the Rings action games) rather than as the driver of a sweeping plotline.
But on its own terms, as a relatively easy-to-play fighting game that is ultimately no more gory or violent than Saturday morning cartoons, as a game with no larger point than trash-talking friends or relatives on the couch as you bop their character off the next ledge, it’s great. And there’s nothing wrong with that.
Overall Rating: I give it a 9 out of 10
The third installment in nintendo's smashing franchise. The other two of the Smashing series were a hit. I had high expectations as I went to the store to purchase Super Smash Bros Brawl. Many of my other friends that had purchased this game before me and some even told me that it had just been overhyped and it wasn't even worth it to buy!! I was stunned...had Nintendo messed up what could have been the best game for the Wii ever?! I had to play it to find out. The next thing I knew 6 hours went by. I never would have guessed it would have been so fun! If you hear that it is just an overhyped game, ignore it! Here is why:
Gameplay-10
There are 4 different ways to control your character. The classical controller, gamecube controller, wii remote, or the wii remote and the nunchuck. The controls are easy to learn if you've played the other games in the smash bros series, but even if you're a novice, learning to play can only take 30-60 min! Each character has unique attacks. Also included in brawl that wasn't in the first smash bros is something called a final smash. It is a special move that is different for every character. Use this to cause major damage and turn the odds in your favor during a match. There is new pokemon, trophies, events, stages, and now you can even create your own stage! For the first time ever in this series your are allowed to create your own stage and brawl on it!
Music-10
There is music from loads of nintendo games on brawl. Metroid, fire emblem, Mario, Sonic, Metal Gear Solid, Pokemon, and more! The music helps add to the feel of the battle and get you more into the game. With some amazing twists to some of the older songs, this game is full of surprises.
Story-10
There is even a story now! I thought this was great. Although none of the characters talk throughout the whole thing; you can still understand what's going on! They brought all the characters together great in the storyline too!
Graphic-10
The graphics on this game surpass those on any of the other of the Smash series. They're great, all there is too it.
Extras-10
There are tons of new things to unlock in brawl, stages (luigi's mansion, spear pillar, the new pokemon stadium and more!) characters (luigi, falco, snake, sonic, wolf, and more!) free demos of previous nintendo games (star fox, F-Zero, Kirby, and more!) songs (Star Wolf theme, underground theme from mario bros, rainbow road and more!) trophies (stafy, mewtwo, sand bag, and more!) There are hours of stuff to unlock in this game; it's just amazing.
Wi-fi-9
You mean now I can play against a player whenever I'm at my house alone with no one to brawl with? Yes! Brawl is wi-fi compatible! That means you don't have to spend the entire day pounding in the heads of all those easy lvl 9 computers you face off against. You can even spectate a match! So why a 9 you say? I wasn't too impressed with how unsmooth the matches were. Some were great but others...lagged a little more than I wanted. Oh well, still a great part of Brawl.
With over 30 characters to unlock, not mention all the stages and trophies and events there are, this game is amazing. There is so much you can do. If you played super smash bros melee, or super smash bros, then you must buy this game. I guarantee you'll love this game smash fan or not, old or young, an experience gamer or first timer. So what are you waiting for? Buy Super Smash Bros Brawl!

It's another must have game for Nintendo.
Story-0
It's a fighting game, there's no need for story. Otherwise, how could you explain the logic behind a fight between Mario and Solid Snake.
Well actually there is a story mode that you can play together with your friend (only up to 2 players in this mode). It's very fun also. Basically you fight the enemy to rescue your friends. Ganondorf and Bowser are trying to capture all the characters and destroy earth, it's up to you to make save all of your friends and earth. After you have finished the game, you will be able to play as Sonic.
Graphics-10
Easily one of the best graphics for any game available for the system. Movie/FMV in the game is excellent.
Gameplay/Control-10
Top notch.. You have the option to use the Wiimote, Classic Controller, or GameCube controller. I just love the GameCube controller since it feels natural for me. I have been playing Super Smash Bros Melee for the last few years on my Game Cube. And it just feels right to continue playing this game using the GC controller.
Like the previous game in the series, there are plenty of characters that you have to unlock by accomplishing several objectives.
Get this game now, it's must game for every Wii owner. Make sure you get your friends to come over to your place to play this game. (Well, you can play this game online too actually; but I havent tried this feature yet, thus i cannot give any comment yet) .Trust me that this game will be a lot more FUN when you play it with your friends.
BONUS GAME: there are plenty of 'retro' bonus games that you can play in the game. There's a time restriction in how long you can play the game. So far I have found these games: Kirby (NES), StarFox (N64), F-ZERO (SNES), Super Mario World (SNES), Metroid, Donkey Kong, and many others.
For parents, this game got 'Teen' rating. It got cartoon violence and crude humor.
It's hard to believe, but it's been nine years since the original Super Smash Bros. brought some of the most iconic Nintendo characters together for frantic battles, and roughly seven years since its sequel Super Smash Bros. Melee was released. Perhaps even harder still to believe--and a testament to the series' popularity and longevity--is that these games are still being played religiously to this day. But no matter whether you're a diehard Smash Bros. fanatic or a neophyte brawler, you'll be pleased to know that Super Smash Bros. Brawl includes a plethora of impressive characters, features, and game modes, and is more accessible and fun than ever before.
For the uninitiated, Smash Bros. is a multiplayer-centric series of fast-paced 2D fighting games that features a cast of characters from all over the Nintendo universe. If you've ever found yourself arguing with a friend about whether or not Mario could beat Link in a one-on-one match, Brawl is the game that will let you settle the issue once and for all (the answer of course is that Kirby would eat them both). Characters such as Ike from Fire Emblem, Meta Knight from Kirby, Fox McCloud from Star Fox, Lucas from the unreleased-in-the-US Mother 3 (Earthbound 2), Pikachu from Pokémon, and many more are all on the roster in Brawl, boosting its size up to an impressive 35 total characters--14 of which are hidden and must be unlocked. For the first time, the list of guests includes third-party, non-Nintendo characters such as Solid Snake and Sonic the Hedgehog, and all of them bring their own signature fighting styles and moves to the game.
