I bought this game because I love the Mario games (Mario Kart, Mario Tennis, Mario Party etc ...) and I love soccer games. I was not disappointed.
In my opinion I found that the super strikes and bowser attacks were kind of cheap and took away from the gameplay, but hey you can turn them off. There are plenty of tournaments to play of various difficulty, and several modes to play, Novice, Professional, Superstar and Legend. The Novice mode is really easy to get used to the game and the Legend mode is a real challenge.
You can also play tournaments with 2 players on the same team, so hook up with a buddy and play the tournaments or just play multiplayer grudge matches.
Most soccer games are pretty poor when you play 2 players on the same team, but not this game. It actually makes it somewhat easier because you have 2 guys to help your team, 2 guys to get back on defense and stop them scoring and 2 guys to get forward and score. Crossing the ball in with a perfect pass to your buddy is a great way to score without the cheap stuff.
There are some other cool things about the game like the hard hit tackle and smashing the opponent into the electric fence (the arenas are all indoor and the ball never goes out) as well as perfect passes when you pass to someone in front of goal. The goal celebrations are cool and you can score some pretty amazing goals, with hard shots, great curve shots and even over head kicks.
My only complaint would be that there is only one deke move that you can do to beat players and also in the bowser cup you have to play 9 games just to get to play the super team. If you lose to the super team, you have to restart the cup and play another 9 games to try and play the super team again, which is really frustrating, especially on Legend level when it is like impossible to beat them.
Other than that this game kicks ass for soccer fans and of course fans of Mario.
This is an excellent video game for children. I have spent countless hours playing with my 6 year old son. We are a team now ! He likes to play as Waluigi and I like to play as Luigi but we are always on the same team ! We then head out to the park and practice soccer, tennis and baseball !!!
If you have children and plan to purchase a video game console, please buy Nintendo... DON'T even think about buying a Playstation or an XBOX, and if you buy a Nintendo, buy the Mario franchise games, they'll love them (my kids friends have playstation's and XBOX's but they spent most of their free time Monday thru Friday at my home... playing Nintendo)!!!
Back to this video game. Super Mario Strikers is a cartoon like video game, don't expect FIFA 2007 or Madden NFL 2007. As a cartoon like video game you obviuosly have cartoon like graphics and behaviors. The game comes with several options to play a match, starting with a grudge match. You can also play regular cup matches, there are 4 cups and 4 super cups. All the matches have the same rules below:
There are 4 different difficulty levels: Rookie, professional, legend, etc ... The matches can last from 2 minutes up to 15 minutes. There are no half times. The matches are 4 on 4 plus the goalies, meaning that the teams are 5 players only. The captain of the team is always a major mushroom kingdom character, namely, Mario, Luigi, Peach, etc ... The team is completed by 3 sidekicks, birdo, toad, toadette, etc ... which are the same 3 per team, the goalie is always a lizzard for any team. You can control one character at a time, either the captain or a sideckick but not the goalie, unless he gets the ball, which actually makes the game quite frantic. You can pass, lob, shoot, slide, charge, etc ... with any of the characters BUT you can only powershoot with the captain. There are power ups also and this is where the cartoon like video game kicks in and the game becomes a chaos, franctic and a lot of fun. The characters can throw bombs, shells, freeze, etc ... at each other... and the game becomes very intensive and frantic once Bowser starts appearing causing chaos...
In this game you can play against the computer or with up to 4 players either on the same team or can pick to play either one against one or two against two. You can also pick the stadiums if you decide to play the grudge match BUT not in the cups.
Once again, please pay attention to this comment:
This video game is intended for the younger audience but can be a lot of fun for adults also. It is not intended for the 30 something single guy that plays manhunt on the playstation... which by the way is the majority of the video games buyers and I thank them, without them I would not have a business...

I never even heard that this game was coming out when it first released, but then my friend came over and he had bought it on a whim, and we fell in love.
This is the best Mario Sports game out there and differs from the other sports titles in the Mario series. It is rather refreshing to see a Mario game where the characters are not playing soccer to, say, free the twelve star maidens to chase Bowser away from the land, so they can party all night. This game is lacking any type of story, other then to win a tournament. It is full of out right hatred for the other players, and is quickly evident. The characters begin each match with a taunt, and then continue to bash each other around into electrical fences. (I really enjoy the sound of Daisy screaming as she hits an electrical Fence) It is the most fun I have ever had playing a soccer game.
The basic play is you and a team of 5 others (Sidekicks) is on the field competing against another team of 5. It will take tackles, shells, and the Captains (main character) super striker move to beat this match.
Over all this was a great game. Its graphics were not the best in the world, but they suited very well for this game. The one player mode was pretty fun, but where this game is best played in is multi-player mode. The controls are quick and easy to master, which is good for any player, new or veteran.
I give Super Mario Strikers an 8 out 10.
Super Mario Strikers (Gamecube, 2005)
One of the Best Mario Sports Games Ever!!!
That being said, I find that Mario Sports lose their replay value after a couple weeks, Super Mario Strikers holds true to this notion in single player mode. However Multi-player is a whole other story.
Super Mario Strikers multi-player is very simple but can be incredibly fun with 3 or more people. Don't use tournament mode, just use Grudge Match Mode and keep track of your own stats. My friends and I sometimes burn up to 3 hours doing this. We also turn off items, bowser attack and outlaw hitting, it makes the game a lot more fun if you actually want a challenge.
Pros:
- Great Multiplayer Mode
- The Goal Celebrations are pretty Good
- Good Selection of Main Characters
- Ability to daze Goalies with Hard shots
- Perfect Passes
- Hitting people into the fences (The screaming is awesome)
Cons:
- Not Enough Supporting Teammates (Two different Turtle types? Where are the Goombas?)
- Colour Scheme for players can sometimes be confusing (both teams have purple support players)
- The game is very hard on higher settings
- The hit button gets very annoying/Not able to turn off hitting in options menu
- Unlockables/Cheats leave you wanting more
- Single Player mode is short and loses it's replay value after a week
- Single Player mode might be too hard for younger players (10 and under)
- Goalies are extremely inconsistent
- Easy ability to pull off power shots
Final Verdict:
Even though the cons outweigh the pros in this game mainly due to flaws and replay value in single player mode, this game makes up for it in Multiplayer mode.
4/5
Rent or Buy: If you have a bunch of friends who spend a lot of time hanging out at your place, or if you have more than one child this game is a definate Buy.

Nintendo did it again with Mario Strikers. This soccer based game is loads of fun as you pick your character (includes all nintendo characters from Wario to Birdo). Enjoy smashing your opponent with power up's like red shells and bombs to stop them from scoring a goal. Use your main character to kick a power goal worth 2 points. Grab three friends plus yourself and take on the computer in cup battles. Winning these cup battles unlocks several new features and cheats.
Lots of fun, gameplay is fast paced and keeps you on the edge of your seat. A must for any fan of nintendo's sports games. Good for all ages!
