This is a good film of Shirley Temple as portrayed in a Chinese setting.
She falls asleep in a car that gets loaded onto a ship and upon waking doesn't know where she is only that she is a stowaway. She meets Susan Parker (played by Alice Faye) and a wealthy car owner, Tommy Randell (played by Robert Young) in hopes of uniting them. I enjoy all the Shirley Temple videos and had this one on tape from TV, so I had been looking for the actual video for awhile. The song she performs "You've gotta S-M-I-L-E" is really adorable as she dances and sings, even does alittle impersonating of famous people. Its a sweet story and Temple does an outstanding job in this film. If you like Shirley Temple or even if you need something to smile about, this is a terrific film to own.
Not really a musical, the plot is a little better than most of Shirley's films. Shirley and Alice Faye do get to sing a couple of times. Shirley is very cute as an orphan of missionary parents and often has a Chinese Proverb to tell. She befriends a playboy, Robert Young and an engaged Alice Faye.(there is almost always a romance in a Shirley Temple film.) In one scene it's amateur night, and Shirley steals the show with her singing and impressions. I highly recommend it to people who enjoy Shirley Temple movies.
I like it because I really enjoy Shirley Temple as a child star. Her acting, dancing and singing is really good in this film. I dislike the coloration on it-not as sharp as it should be. But I bought it because I am collecting her films for my grandchildren.
I loved it because it's a Shirley Temple movie and I collect Shirley Temple movies. I needed it to help with my collection.
