Movie synopsis
Based on Stephen King's novella THE BODY, director Rob Reiner's STAND BY ME is the disarmingly tender and subtly sublime story of four kids on the precipice of early adulthood who embark upon a quest. There's Gordie (Wil Wheaton), the intelligent, creative one with the obviously bright future. His best buddy, Chris (River Phoenix), hardens his image in order to hide the pain from the physical abuse he endures at home, all the while harboring the hope of escaping that image. Rounding out the foursome are Vern (Jerry O'Connell), the pudgy tagalong, and Teddy (Corey Feldman), a loyal and funny but troubled kid with a death wish. When the four boys hear about a dead body 20 miles down the railroad tracks from their small Oregon town, they clandestinely set upon the unwieldy journey to lay eyes on this rare find. Amid numerous misadventures, Gordie, Chris, Vern, and Teddy savor what may be their last chance to revel in the simple life of children; around the corner is a future that could tear them apart, not to mention a tough teen gang who desires local fame by finding the body first. Enhanced by excellent performances and an engaging plot, STAND BY ME ranks among the best of the myriad coming-of-age films to dot the 1980s cinematic landscape.

"...While Reiner succeeds in building the story around Wheaton's convincing vulnerability, he also has achieved a rare feat of getting equally empathetic and outstanding performances from everyone else in the cast..."
Variety - Brit. (07/30/1986)

"...A compassionate, perfectly performed look at the real heart of youth. It stands, sweet and strong, ribald, outrageous and funny....It's one of those treasures absolutely not to be missed..."
Los Angeles Times - Sheila Benson (08/08/1986)

"Rob Reiner's evocative rites-of-passager is still memorable for the performances of its four young stars..."

A Wondeful Movie

Stand by Me is one of the most heart-warming movies I have ever seen. The story starts in a small town in Oregon, where there is a rumor spreading that a young boy has been hit and killed by a train. When Chris, Teddy, Vern, and Gordie hear about this, they think it would be a great adventure to go on before the end of summer, and the recognition from finding the boy doesn't hurt, either. The boys encounter many frightening things, including run-away trains, junk yard dogs, and an older gang of boys also looking for the body. But they not only find the body, but also a bond of friendship no one can forget. I highly recomend Stand By Me, but not to smaller children because it does have some language in it.

Great Movie

This movie portrays how it was back then. It was a more innocent time where the biggest decision during the summer was what am I going to do today. We never had much money so we had to improvise but somehow we always came up with something to do that provided entertainment and/or a challange that might bring us to the brink of trouble but somehow stoped just short of it.
Most of us had stay at home moms that after breakfast might not see us again until supper. We were free to roam and explore, back then everyone knew you and your parents. We road our bikes for miles sometimes stoping to skinny dip in the rock pits, which the workers whould chase us out, after about a half hour. There may have been pervs around but we never encounted any.
Kids today face a entirely different set of problems like drugs, sex and bindge drinking. We didn't know what drugs were, sex we snickered about among ourselves & probably would have fainted if the chance did arise and as far as drinking was concerened the exceitement of sneeking a beer didn't compare with the trouble we had sitting for a few days. We had our freedom but there were rules and we knew what the punishment was for breaking them. Did we break some rules? Yeah, some we got away with others we paid the price.

The ending was so true junior high was a new adventure but it also closed one of the best chapters in my life.

I wouldn't change a thing or swap my child hood with anybodys.

Stand by me

I first saw this movie years ago, so when I saw it I purchased it. It has great actors, with a beautifully narrated story. There is swearing which to me was the biggest con of the movie, I am not too sure that kids swore like that in the 1950's. I maybe naive yet the movie would have carried itself fine without the off color language. The death scene may upset younger kids, so parents should preview first to decide if they will want their children see it, (I let mine see it at age 13 and up). I myself, found it a thought provoking movie about life, friends, and death. River Phoenix, sadly dies a tragic death only a few years after making this film. I will always remember him as Chris, young, misunderstood, with a good heart willing to do anything to keep the peace.

Forever Young & Innocent A Movie For All Ages

This film has some rough language..but the sweetness and purity of this film outshines that single negative..A wonderfully written script, a stellar acting cast Wil Wheaton, the late River Phoenix (you are missed), Corey Feldman, Jerry O'Connell and of course Kiefer Sutherland are remarkable for their then young ages..set in the 1950's the viewer is allowed to spend time with four young boys as they set out on a once in a lifetime adventure..you will laugh, cry and rejoice as they come of age in their own innocent way..We loved everything about this movie..if this movie touches or touched you the same way it touched us then watch "Stephen Kings It"! "Stand by Me" is a spectacular film for kids of all ages..

Not for Kids............About Kids

This is one of the finest and truest movies I have ever seen. It missed its mark because it was often referred to as a kids movie. It is not. It is a film about kids and there's a difference. The movie is told from the perspective of a middle aged man looking back on his childhood. Something no child or teenager could possibly do or apprecciate.
Now the story is first rate and it takes place in Oregon in 1959. The Photragraphy is beautiful. The acting is outstanding. River Phoenix and Will Wheaton are in a class by themselves. Not to take anything away from Jerry O'Connell or Corey Feldman who were also excellent.
If you are the least bit introspective or old enough to remember the late 50's early 60's and what it was to be a kid back then; Then you should buy this movie I promise you, you wont regret it.
