PLOT: STALAG 17 holds a group of downed flyers in World War 2. Each escape attempt is thwarted....how do the Nazis know everything going on inside the Camp? OUTSTANDING~
PRODUCED AND DIRECTED BY BILLY WILDER ...THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST World War 2 prison camp movies (the other being of course the Great Escape~) but this stands above most~ William Holden won an OSCAR as a flyer downed and inside the camp while most scrape by day by day waiting for the war to end, Holden has an angle you name the way to make money he has it! MICE RACES, MAKE HIM MONEY BY GAMBLING~ HAVING FOUND dozens of clever ways to make HIM Money his footlocker looks like "Macys " in the middle of a barren camp~ the DISGUST of the other prisoners is felt but they "tolerate" this clever schemer~ several "escape" attempts are made and each one results in the Nazis waiting for the men on the escape end and shooting them~ so the search is on for the "informant." the obvious is HOLDEN who has special privlidges and items from Camera and soap and just about everything a captive solider dreams of having~ but the FUN is watching HOLDEN who is beat up for the suspicions of HIS fellow prisoners start his own clever "watch" to ferret out the REAL traitor and excellent well done MYSTERY too~ for comedy relief we SEE ANIMAL who is always dreaming of Betty Grable and his plan to meet her after the war is over~ OTTO PREMENGER AS THE NAZI IN CHARGE who has no plans to get HIS boots dirty in the mud~AND they did it right by having REAL Germans as GERMANS~ it adds to the "feel" of the movie~ outstanding writing, directing and ACTING~ NEVER DRAGS~ THERE is just enough comedy relief to make this have some "fun" on how men keep from going insane inside a POW camp. ....ALSO SEE THE GREAT ESCAPE~ for more excellent Holden World War 2 adventure also see The Counterfeit Traitor~
I GIVE IT A SOLID 10 OUT OF 10~

Stalag 17 is another old black and white war movie. Many of the people in this movie you will have seen since then in other movies and TV shows. This movie is set in a prisoner of war camp run by the Germans during World War II. This is about a group of sargents that were captured and are trying to escape. The camp can be described as a mud hole, infact the mud plays a part in the plot to some extent. This movie could be called a study of personalities within the camp. There are the Germans who run the camp and a wild assortment of prisoners plotting escape. But there are problems in the group. I could go into lots of detail but it would spoil some of the surprizes in the plot.
The DVD itself is of high quality and the picture is sharp. Even in black and white it still looks good. Anyone who is a fan of military or war movies should get this one for sure. It will be worth the price.
I love classic films like this. For years, I thought this was the basis for Hogan's Heroes and was told it's not.
This film has everything you can ask for in a classic: intrigue, comedy, drama, the list goes on. William Holden was the main reason I wanted this film. I don't own any of his others, so I bought what I felt was his best. Damn good actor who died before his time.
Harvey Lembeck was great, too. He was in all the beach movies with Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello as a bad-boy biker always schemeing against the former and their gang.
Excellent performances by the entire cast, including a young Peter Graves, who went on to stardom on Mission: Impossible.
Best POW movie ever. William Holden won the Academy Award for this movie. One of Billy Wilders best comedys. Hard to think of a funner movie taking place in a not so funny place.
The greatest war film every made. Drama like The Guns of Navarone. Human passion like Bridge over the River Kwai. A plot far deeper then Kellys Heroes, and an unusual romance in B & W. Stalag 17 was made with no special effects. No digital enhancement and a cast that was selectively chosen for talent and filling their roles perfectly.
A classic!!! A masterpiece!!! A story for men, women and even children!!!
