Good placeholder fretless and for testing the waters

This is an excellent value reproduction of a much higher-end jazz fretless from Fender, and has a big advantage in using an ebony-like fretboard vs. rosewood or something else. Pickups are excellent and sound truly vintage.
I had hoped to buy the Tony Franklin edition but it sold out from under me so I bought this as a placeholder. I will NOT be keeping it, as the ebonol surface doesn't feel as nice as the true ebony on my upright bass and as my upright -- though not a full-scale version -- just sounds richer, warmer, and better for everything that I threw at it yesterday.
I've owned many fretless bass guitars over the years, and I think I just prefer upright bass in every case. So that's a personal preference. As fretless bass guitars go though, the only one I've played that I find superior is the elusive Tony Franklin model, which costs six times as much!
Thus, this cheap Squier model is an EXCELLENT way to find out if fretless bass guitar is for you or not, and may well end up being a "keeper" if you can get on with its slick ftretboard and somewhat dark sound.

Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Fretless Electric Bass

I purchased this bass because there has been so much written about it. Reviewers constantly hyped on its classic Jaco look, feel and sound so I had to try it for my self. Everybody was right; Squier hit the mark with this one.
A bass’s looks are not as important to me as it’s feel and tone but if this bass was a girl at a party guys wouldn’t even talk to her, they would be too intimidated.
The feel of this bass is of coarse you normal Fender “you ether loveum or hateum. One thing I can say is that it’s very light, unlike the ones from the 60s and 70s.
The tone is like butter “butta” on hot toast. This bass can go from upright to Jaco in 5.4 seconds with plenty of mwah to go around. The only criticism I have is the pickup could be a little hotter but that could take away from the classic tone.

I read lots of reviews on this bass guitar. Went to a guitar shop to try it out, before buying one. I am enjoying the sound, especially after putting on D'addario flatwound bass guitar strings... now it just sings!! It is truly a joy to play.

For such a cheap price, this bass is well worth it. Sounds great, action great, no neck buzz ...I was leery about buying a Squier after owning Fenders my whole life....glad i didn't hesitate
