Movie synopsis
A brilliant and hilarious documentary-style satire of a has-been British heavy metal band who never really was on an absurd American comeback tour that never quite gets off the ground, THIS IS SPINAL TAP practically birthed the mockumentary style. Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer are David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel, and Derek Smalls, respectively--three clueless, self-absorbed men who form the nucleus of Spinal Tap, aging purveyors of overwrought songs with titles such as "Big Bottom," "Smell the Glove," and "Sex Farm." Shot in faux cinema verité-style with director Rob Reiner as fictional filmmaker Marty DiBergi, the film lampoons just about every rock & roll cliché (not to mention every rockumentary cliché) in the book as it follows these fallen rock idols from one disastrous gig to the next. Scenes of the tour's descent from desperation into total collapse are interspersed with interviews in which the band members delightfully prattle on inanely about the none-too-illustrious history and dubious vision of Spinal Tap. THIS IS SPINAL TAP is a striking and acutely hysterical directorial debut for Reiner and a deserved cult classic. Watch for an endless array of cameos by wonderful comic character actors along the way.

This Is Spinal Tap: The sights, sounds and SMELLS

Review For: This Is Spinal Tap (DVD, 2000, Special Edition)

Spinal Tap, an aging rock band has its ups and downs. Guitars malfunction, the bread backstage is "miniature" when they want it to be "large",and the "Stonehenge monument was in danger of being crushed--by a dwarf". Of course, they also have some good things happen to them.
Filmmaker Marty Dibergi seems to catch Spinal Tap at interesting moments. And, through the course of the movie, we are introduced to Nigel Tufnel, lead guitar; David St. Hubbins, lead guitarist; and Derek Smalls, bass. We meet Mick Shrimpton, one of Tap's MANY drummers, and we see Viv Savage, the keyboardest, though we never hear a word from him until the end credits. Jeanine Pettibone, Dave's girlfriend becomes a small issume with Ian Faith, the band's manager, and Nigel throughout.
Spinal Tap realises that as they get older, they become less popular, and some people don't find them the big bad rockers that they used to.
Through apperent references to The Beatles, Queen, Led Zeppelin, KISS, and so many other classic rock bands, you see the rocker life through the eyes of "one of England's loudest rock bands".
Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer play the three lead band members, and in fact also wrote and performed the Tap numbers.
So, if you're a fan of rock, or have ever been in a rock band, you are sure to find this movie hilarious.

Did 4 Rock What Sound of Music Did 4 Hills-Turn it to11

This HAS to be the funniest mockumentary, actually one of the funniest movies ever filmed. It is a perfect balance of what rock stars are and what the public likes to believe they are.

What is not to love? A hair band who has seen better days is being followed around while promoting their new album - Smell the Glove. You meet the band, the tragic fate of all their drummers, the crew, colleagues and fans. You see them in concert, the magnificent - albeit small - replica of the Stonehenge, the failures and triumphs (ok not many triumphs).

Seriously, this is a very funny movie with tons of famous people doing cameos and the hilarious Michael McKean, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer as the world's loudest band. Highly recommended!

Scathing satire and crude humor, a winning combination

Review For: This Is Spinal Tap (DVD, 2000, Special Edition)

Rob Reiner and company go into great detail and play Spinal Tap straight coast to coast. If you like satire, and heavy metal is certainly ripe for the picking, then check out This is Spinal Tap. The band members are dumb, but the writing, directing and acting are not. This movies pokes (mostly) good natured fun at the expense of an aging has been metal band comprised of Micheal McKeown, Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer and others. This is a brilliantly funny movie to anyone except maybe to bands like Quiet Riot, Scorpions, etc as some of the material musy really hit home. Great Movie. One of my all time faves.

Tap into Ebay

Review For: This Is Spinal Tap (DVD, 2000, Special Edition)

This is Spinal Tap will go down in history as one of the greatest comedies ever made, but buyers should know not all This is Spinal Tap DVDs are the same. The most common Tap DVD is the Special Edition, while the Criterion Edition is not as common and significantly more expensive. Both have features and extras not present in the other, so both are required for any serious fan. Perhaps the biggest difference is the commentary tracks. The Special Edition DVD has commentary by the band members in character, while the Criterion Edition has band commentary out of character, as well as additional commentary by Rob Reiner, which is not present on the Special Edition DVD. The question then becomes, how big a fan of this movie are you? Many might be content with the Special Edition DVD, which is excellent, but the hardcore fan will want the Criterion Edition as well.
