SORDID LIVES is self-touted as a "Black Comedy about White Trash". It's packed full of one liners that you'll find yourself repeating over and over again, like "..Was the steak tender, the night Peggy died?" ... or "If I'd a known Sister was gonna die, I'd a never quit smokin" ...or one of my favorites, "If you squint your eyes real hard, she looks just like Tammy -- in the early years."
To truly understand, or at least appreciate the movie, you have to have experienced life in the rural South at one point in your life, with the foot-ball-helmet teased-up hairdos (that some Southern women somehow STILL believe is stylish) to the one syllable words becoming two, like "Lord" becomes "Lo-Ward".)
Any movie that has a cast like Delta Burke, Beau Bridges, Olivia Newton-John and a cross-dressing Leslie Jordan (Brother Boy) has to be hilarious. If that doesn't do it, then what about a re-union at the funeral of "Grandma Peggy", who passed away after tripping on her lover's wooden leg?...it doesn't get much funnier than that!
I absolutely LOVE this movie. It is definitely a low budget film, but it's hilarious! In my opinion, it is a gay themed movie, but its a movie anyone would enjoy. I've seen this movie atleast 30 times, but it will never get old to me. Olivia Newton John is in this movie, and you can barely recognize her. They have her made up so trashy looking. There is a guy called brother boy who is a female impersonater and is locked up in the mental institution where a counselor is trying to dehomosexualitize him. The only thing I don't like about this movie is the character "Ty." I don't think he brings anything to the film. Other than that, this movie is fabulous. If you like comedy, you should definitely watch this movie.
Del Shores, the writer of this movie, has came out with a series called "Sordid Lives." It comes on the LOGO channel. It's just as funny as the movie is! Check it out!!
I bought this movie because my friends were making reference to it in conversation. I did not think it was going to be any good at all.
Homosexuals like the most obscure things you can imagine. And over the top, some say talent, art like Judy Garland. That is not my thing.
This movie is my family. I am a native Texan. It is a comedy. It is truly funny, when you realise these people you have known your entire life... It is alternately hilarious and bittersweet.
People would like to pigeonhole it as a gay movie, it is far from about that. It is about the sweetness in people.Loving the unlovable in people and the lenghts we go to to not acknowledge the preciousness in the most mundane among us.It is a movie for the rest of us, outside the box of perfection. That place that only exists in some reality I have never seen. Del Shores the writer, producer and director is "my best friend" .I have never met him but watch the movie you will get it...
I bought the movie because I had been to recent production of the play by the same name. The movie is a hilarious white trash comedy set in the events surrounding one of the family. She met a tragic death while in a motel room with her lover. Her son is locked up because he thinks he is Tammy Wynette, and her grandson is a gay actor who is in the closet. Sordid Lives is one of my favorite trash movies. Buy it, rent it, or steal it from a friend, but see this movie!
And, if you have the opportunity to see a live production, do that also.
Sordid Lives is not just a comedy involving homosexuals. It is a universal comedy that can relate to all members of society. From the higher class (Latrelle) to the lower class (Bitsy Mae). You can truly appreciate the comedy and you'll be entertained with the entire plot of the grandmother and the entertaining songs. Keep an open mind, and prepare to laugh!
I even own two copies. In addition, I saw the play LIVE with most of the cast from the original production and on the DVD. The talented Leslie Jordan, a.k.a. "Brother Boy" is bound to make ANYONE laugh.
