Movie synopsis
Inspired by the beloved segment of the Walt Disney classic FANTASIA, THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE moves the setting of the story to modern-day Manhattan, where decidedly average teen Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel) hones his magical powers under the tutelage of master sorcerer Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage). Malevolent wizard Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina) is determined to claim New York City as his own. And Horvath isn't alone in his diabolical endeavor, because by joining forces with the sinister sorcerer, pop illusionist Drake Stone (Toby Kebbell) aspires to gain powers beyond his wildest imagination. Realizing that he can't take on Horvath and Stone alone, Blake recruits Stutler as his reluctant assistant and begins training him the battle that will determine the fate of the Big Apple. Teresa Palmer and Monica Bellucci co-star.

Editorial reviews

3 stars out of 5 -- "Cage, with long hair and a cheeky attitude, dominates the proceedings with a quirky sense of fun and authority, while Baruchel plays his geeky side and generally succeeds. Best of the bunch, though, are the villains, particularly Molina..."
Box Office - Pete Hammond (07/13/2010)

"The director, Jon Turteltaub, and his several writers devise some clever set pieces, such as a dragon in a Chinatown parade that starts breathing smoke and fire..."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (07/14/2010)

"[Cage] is at his most charismatic...the CGI is spangly fun..."
Entertainment Weekly - Owen Gleiberman (07/23/2010)

3 stars out of 5 -- "THE CG magic certainly pops and crackles, and offers New York as a fantasy-realm as dragons spit flames in Chinatown and a Chrysler Building eagle takes flight."
Empire - Ian Nathan (09/01/2010)

"[The effects] rival that of HARRY POTTER, LORD OF THE RINGS, and every other modern wizard blockbuster."
Premiere (11/30/2008)

More great family action from Disney

Review For: The Sorcerer's Apprentice (Blu-ray/DVD, 2010, 3-Disc Set, Includes Digital Copy)

For over 1,000 years master Sorcerer Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) has been looking for the one who will replace his mentor, Merlin, he finds him in New York City in the person of Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel). However things do not go as planned when David accidentally releases Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina) who is determined to free Morgana, Balthazar's greatest enemy. and together Balthazar and David must defend the world from Morgana.

The movie is an adaptation of the Disney Classic Fantasia with an all new look.

The story and the acting ate very good in this movie, Cage does a great job and Baruchel plays a bumbling teen, which he seems to be pretty good at doing.

I would not recommend this movie to the very young, however for kids 12 and up is would be okay.

The complete cast: Nicolas Cage as Balthazar Blake, Jay Baruchel as David "Dave" Stutler, Jake Cherry as Young David "Dave" Stutler, Alfred Molina as Maxim Horvath, Alice Krige as Morgana le Fay,, James A. Stephens as Merlin, the legendary wizard, Monica Bellucci as Veronica Gorloisen, Teresa Palmer as Rebecca "Becky" Barnes, Peyton R. List as Young Becky, Toby Kebbell as Drake Stone, Nicole Ehinger as Abigail Williams, Robert Capron as Oliver Twistmeyer, Omar Benson Miller as Bennet Zurrow, and Ethan Peck as Andre Dunlap

Excellent we added to our holiday collection

Review For: The Sorcerer's Apprentice (Blu-ray/DVD, 2010, 3-Disc Set, Includes Digital Copy)

Nicholas Cage is awesome, as usual, but the surprise here is the young actor, Jay Baruchel, who plays the apprentice. His demonstrates some fine acting skills, along with his own special brand of charisma. How nice it was to actually go to a movie that was 'fun' for a change instead of just another ho hum attempt at entertainment. Just the right amount of special effects and several supporting characters that were very interesting, too.
Excellent movie! Fun for all ages. I don't remember anything that would preclude the kiddies from seeing it. It's a story about magic, energy, and physics, and also about believing in your own abilities.

The story begins in Britain, 740 A.D., in the final battle between Sorceress Morgana and Sorcerer Merlin. (Some of you may remember these characters from King Arthur and Camelot times.) Morgana kills Merlin, but Merlin's apprentice, Balcazar, manages to trap Morgana in a Russian Nesting Doll, which they later refer to as the Grimhold. (A Russian Nesting Doll is a doll painted on a closed vase. There are several smaller and smaller dolls/vases within the doll on top, thereby creating a layered or nesting effect. You often see Russian Nesting Dolls at multi-cultural craft shows.) For over 1,000 years, Balcazar has captured evil Morganites (followers of Morgana) and trapped them in layers of the doll above Morgana. The prophecy is that there will be a Prime Millennium (PM) (spelling?) who will come into the picture. The PM will be the heir to Merlin's powers and only the PM will be able to kill off Morgana once and for all. Balcazar must search for the PM until he is found, then train him in Wizardry.

Fast forward to the year 2000, we meet shy, somewhat nerdy 9 or 10 year old David on a field trip with his classmates. Chasing a note from a pretty young girl, he finds himself in a very strange shop in New York called the Arcana Cabana, alive with weird and scary relics of a time long forgotten. It is in this shop that David meets Balcazar (Nicholas Cage), and Balcazar recognizes David as the PM. The "stuff" starts happening that day and scares the heck out of David.

Fast forward another 10 years and our hero is now about 20. David is a physics nerd in college and he is darned good with physics and electronics. Just as David THOUGHT the old experience was over, Morganite Horvath comes after David looking for the Grimhold while Balcazar comes to help David and protect the Grimhold. You see, Horvath wants to free Morgana, so Morgana can bring the evil dead to life and take over the world! OMG!

We have lots of adventure as Balcazar tries to teach David the Wizardry he needs to know before it is too late. (Actually, David already has the ability within him. Balcazar just has to re-awaken David and help David find the belief in himself that he CAN do it.) I especially love in the early learning stages, when Balcazar says to David in a calm voice, "David, you should run."

Great movie! Nice job by Nicholas Cage, a fine actor who does justice to every part he plays. Yes, I DO most certainly plan to watch this movie again. I believe you will enjoy it very much.

You know, I think this movie got a bad rap on release. Sure, it was labeled as another "Jerry Bruckheimer Summer movie" but really, it's actually very good. Yeah, I know Nicolas cage can be very hit or miss with his movies (and lets be honest, more are miss than hit nowadays) but this is one Disney action blockbuster that you probably should take the time to view.

Cage plays Balthazar, one of three apprentices to the sorcerer Merlin, he spends his time looking for a "chosen one" who can defeat the evil Morgana. This, as you can imagine, takes awhile... a long while. Actually, it takes thousands of years, and when Balthazar does find Dave, who he hopes to be the new Sorcerer, he turns out he is a wimpy dork of a kid (who is played to perfection by Jay Baruchel) So Balthazal trains Dave for his showdown, yada, yada, yada... The casting is impressive, the action is very fast paced, loud and most importantly FUN, the only downside is that the love story between Dave and the girl of his dreams Becky. While needed, it feels like it has been tacked on as more of a plot point than a genuine love story.

Did I mention that this film looked spectacular? Well it does, and THAT is why it was so expensive to make, and that is also why it was considered a bust at the box office (even though it did break even at the U.S. box office - just) oh yeah, and it has Alfred Molina in it, and as we all know, Alfred can save any movie ("Prince Of Persia") or just make a good movie, a fantastic movie ("An Education") Go on, take a look at this one, it's really not as bad as you have been lead to believe.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice

This really a fun movie with Nicholas Cage playing a long lived sorcerer on the look out for an apprentice to help his defeat his enemy played very well by Alfred Molina. The action and special effects are fantastic. Make sure you watch through the credits. Many Disney movies give you a teaser after all the credits have run and this one has a delightful surprise.

GOOD, BUT JUST OKAY!

Review For: The Sorcerer's Apprentice (Blu-ray/DVD, 2010, 3-Disc Set, Includes Digital Copy)

Walt Disney Movie: Special effects were good, but the story line came up short and un-convincing (they could have done a better job). It's obvious that Disney spent most of their budget on the "Special Effects", and not enough on the writers.

Nicholas Cage helped the movie, but (again) not enough substance to make him shine. And, not even close to being one of his best performances. If your a Nicolas Cage fan, you like it either way.

The movie was entertaining, more so for the younger kids, and just enough for the adults to keep it from getting boaring. But, you still left the movie wanting after it was done.

Bottom line, I wouldn't watch it a second time -by choice.
