    Reviews & Research

    CNET Editors' reviewGood

    • THE GOOD

Attractive design; captures video at 720p and 1080p "HD" resolution; memory-card expansion slot; swiveling lens; component video cables; rechargeable lithium ion battery.

    • THE BAD

Price doesn't include an optional memory card (onboard memory is limited to 12MB for capturing video); rechargeable battery doesn't recharge via USB connector; no integrated USB connector; no protective carrying case included.

    • THE BOTTOM LINE

The MHS-PM1 Webbie HD represents a step forward for Sony in the minicamcorder arena--but some quirks and only OK video quality prevent it from being compelling enough to best the competition.

Sony Webbie HD MHS-PM1, A Little Camera That Does Big Things!

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

I got the Sony Webbie HD MHS-PM1/V Camcorder as my first video camera. I did a lot of research before deciding what would be the best camera for my budget. I did not need a expensive one for now, so I went with one of the so called low budget ones as it would be plenty for what I need to do (HD Youtube videos and such). And I must admit, I am very happy with this camera.
It is very easy to use. I just took it out of the box, turned it on and in about ten minutes I pretty much had the hang of everything. On the video quality, I tried all formats (640, 720, 1080), in good light it filmed excellent on all sizes. You will have to buy more memory for it, with what it comes with you will only get about twenty seconds of video.
In low light you do suffer in quality as the camera does not come with a LED light for flash. So to get good shoots outdoors at night, you will need a light source. But even in low light, still does pretty good. Of course your not going to get the quality you would get with the cams in the higher priced range, but for the price it does impressively well.
It does not come with image stabilization, so you will have to have a steady hand while filming, or a tripod to get good steady videos. And it does not come with a lot of bells and whistles, just what you need to do what it was made for, film HD videos with a way better then average pocket cam.
It comes with a Sony NP-BK1 battery, 12MB of memory which gives you very little video and picture space. The battery life is about 100 minutes and you can buy flash memory (Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick PRO Duo) to drastically up your filming and picture space. It also comes with a battery charger, a CD with some programs/manual and all the cords you will need to run it to PC or your television.
Sound wise, it picks up very well. I think the sound was one of the biggest surprises to me, as it really does a good job of capturing all the tones that most smaller cameras just does not quite pick up. The audio is Mono, but still very nice capture of sounds.
Picture wise it could be better. It does fine in good light and if you hold the came very still. At night it suffers from lack of flash when you snap the pictures, so you get a lot of pixels covering the photo. Not the best, not the worst.
As mentioned before, do not expect to get the performance form this cam you would from one of the more expensive ones. But for the price and true HD quality that it does deliver, I think for a first camera I made a smart buy. So if your a vlogger, like to post videos on YouTube and such or just simply film everyday life with friends and family, I would say this would be a great camera to start with till you can work up to a more pricey one. I am very happy with it, and plan on having a lot of fun using it.
    Anight :)

Rotating lens and HD video make this very useful.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

This is a good camera, especially if you can get it for $60 or less. The rotating lens lets you hold the camera at many angles as needed. It also has interchangeable batteries, which allow you to keep shooting if one runs out (unlike those that you have to plug in the camcorder to charge the battery).
One big drawback (for me at least)is that RECORDING SHUTS OFF AUTOMATICALLY AT 25 MINUTES, regardless of battery or memory left. They don't mention that in the description, but the manual says it's to keep it from overheating. So if you need to shoot over 25 minutes straight, get another camera.

Excellent camera/video for the price. Easy to Operate, fun to use

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

What a great camera/video recorder this is...super small and easy to operate.
I bought my first Sony Webbie about year ago...now I own 3.
I first bought this to take on a trip to the Philippines as a backup, it did such a nice job I never took the large video cam out of the case. It has a digital zoom, not too bad if you do not extend it to its maximum.
