Reviews & Research

CNET Editors' reviewGood

  • THE GOOD

Huge library of games; svelte design; built-in networking/modem ports and remote sensor; doubles as a CD/DVD player; free online gaming with select titles.

  • THE BAD

Top-loading disc tray; only two controller ports; no hard disk expansion option; Xbox's graphics capabilities are superior.

  • THE BOTTOM LINE

Sony's slimmed-down, network-ready PS2 is a welcome update to the world's most popular video game console.

Used Silver PS2 Works Great

I just could not get my eyes off the silver PS2! The color is just amazing and this rare edition isn't sold anywhere in stores anymore. I first thought I was going to buy a new black PS2 slim, but I decided that I'd rather have a rare edition for a cheap price, even though it's used. It works great like a new one. However, I have had some previous problems with the black slim ps2 (I know it has nothing to do with the color). When ps2's just came out, I bought one and it broke down two years later right when the warranty expired. I was very disappointed. Sadly, I had to work with the way my ps2 was by taping it and not moving it and then it worked fine. Even the controller outlet didn't work well: it got disconnected randomly while I was playing a game.

Therefore, I decided to buy a used or refurbished one (There have been so many cases of new PS2's breaking down including mine)and it works great. There are 2 scratches and the reminisce of a skin that was there, but I scraped off that sticky part, and added my own silver chrome skin. The PS2 functions just as a new one, possibly even better. I expect that it will last for 6 years or more, hopefully. Memory card outlet, Cd reader, and controller output all work great (unlike my other new PS2). As you can see I'm very satisfied, but the main thing about buying a PS2 is always making sure it has durability. I was simply lucky to have a silver PS2 that works great as well.

Sony's PS2 Slim... Sure winner? Or Fat chance?

Sony's PlayStation line of video game consoles has always been a winner in my eyes. I obtained my PlayStation 2 early on in its release. Years later, I saw that they had made a slim version of the system. The design looked nice, but I had never seen in it person. I never thought I'd have need for buying one either. That is, until now.

Once again, as far as the design goes it is done very well. Form and function go hand and hand. One advantage to the new model is that the lens is accessible from the top. The very reason I bought this newer one is because my older one was having problems reading one certain disc, and I couldn't access the lens to try to clean it. I could not send it in for service, since it is a Japanese system and I am in the North America, and I dared not open it up myself to attempt repairing it. Hopefully I'll never have to worry about this again with the new model, but if I suspect the lens to be a problem in years to come, I can more easily do something about it.

The system takes up a lot less space, period. I was really amazed by the size when I opened the package; it is much smaller than I thought. It is very lightweight as well. This means that wherever you sit it, you need to be sure that it will not be prone to falling or getting stepped on, as I can only imagine how fragile it must be. At the same time, it means that it is more portable (with great care of course) and can fit in more easily into your entertainment environment.

There are some features that are gone, most notably the expansion bay. This means that one cannot use the internal hard disk drive. However, I don't know many people that mind this. Also, a port for internet connection is directly on the body of the unit now.

All in all I think that Sony has done well with the Playstation 2 Slim. I have yet to experience any problems with it. And hopefully, I never will.

Review For: Sony PlayStation 2 Slim Charcoal Black Console (NTSC - SCPH-70012)

The playstation 2, for me, is all you need. I am pretty up to date with the technology of the day (being a college student), yet I still see no need to buy a PS3. I do not see the value in purchasing every new game that comes out, so I can make do with video games that may be 3, 5, or even 10 years old. The PS2 is wonderful, and it's nice to know I can get entertainment for about a third the cost. Perhaps I'll get a PS3 in the next few years, but the PS2 is the newest system I need for right now.

Compact, and easily portable gaming system

The new slim design has really made this the easiest system to transport anywhere. I love the silver color, and it is so light weight, and small, it is perfect in a motor home or travel trailer. It is great for young kids to begin gaming on, but our whole family enjoys it on camping trips, and our mountain trips to snowboard and ski resorts. The game library is huge and economical and offers something for everyone. I bought the PS2 for gaming on the go. My PS3 is hooked up to the computer, big screen, stereo system, and in an entertainment cabinet. Don't even ask me to move it..EVER. Sony Playstation 2 Slim Silver is an AWESOME system, nothing to dislike about it, it plays music CD's, DVD's, and games.

Stylish and reliable (SCPH-75001)

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

I purchased one of these earlier this year (SCPH-75001), partly since they had become so cheap, plus I had received a gift card for Christmas for a game store, and since I haven't really been much of a "gamer" is recent times, I wasn't sure what to buy. The console has worked fine since I bought it - I've played it for hours and hours at a time, and the console just doesn't seem to give up. I think I've heard of overheating issues with these consoles, but my PS2 Slim seems to work just fine (and very quiet most of the time!). It doubles as a DVD player. It can produce stunning images with as high as 1080i resolution (I have witnessed this with Gran Turismo 4 and Tourist Trophy); one thing about images on the PS2 though is, especially when not in HD, the pictures tends to be much darker than what I experience with my XBOX, but simple solution of increasing brightness seems to be sufficient (not always great, but it works). Graphics, overall, seem to be decent on the small selection of games I've played, though I think I will say that, having access to all three consoles, that the Gamecube and the XBOX generally seem to boast higher graphics, though I would say that the PS2 has some unique graphics that can demonstrate that graphical power is "not everything." My PS2 Slim seems to have little issue running both PS2 and PS1 games (part of the reason I wanted a PS2 was to play older PS1 games). It's about the size of a small notebook when sitting alone (if you include the separate power supply brick, slightly bigger, but not by much, still pretty small). Overall, great, reliable little console. [NOTE - remember to unplug electronics when not in use if possible!]. God bless!
