The PlayStation has an interesting history. Originally designed as a CD-ROM add on for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Nintendo decided against releasing the add-on. Sony then decided to make it a stand-alone gaming console. And an impressive one it was.
For its time, the original PlayStation had some impressive power and graphic abilities. The controllers are some of the most comfortable controllers to hold and the library of games is large including some hit titles that are still going strong on the PlayStation 3 console.
Some of the games to keep an eye out for that, in our opinion, are fun are Destruction Derby, Final Fantasy VII, WipeOut, Sony Rally Cross, Gran Turismo. The PlayStation has the largest selection of hit family titles as well including Crash Bandicoot, Spyro The Dragon, and a sleuth of games based on TV game and animated shows. The more mature games to watch for are Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Parasite Eve series. All games will provide hours of fun, entertainment and challenges.
The system has reached a well deserved 15-year anniversary as of this writing and is still going strong by those that have good memories with it. If considering a console, be sure to pick up a memory card to save game progress on. These don't have internal storage options.
Compared to the Nintendo 64 and Sega Saturn which were the PlayStation's competitors, the PlayStation has proved it can hang with the best of them and actually put the other consoles under it in sales. However, disc care is a must as too many scratches from misuse/abuse will keep the game from playing.
We have had our original Playstation since it was released and it is still going strong. Playing PSOne games on PS2 and PS3 consoles is cool for those that missed out during the PSOne's heyday. But, there is nothing like playing PSOne games on the real thing. Yea, the graphics may be a little "blocky" compared to more modern consoles and games, but the game play is more than one will expect. In our opinion, this is the first console to make CD-ROMs as a gaming medium successful.
Some of the initial release game titles will come in a long cardboard box and are considered by some a collector's items. Others came in a long plastic case similar to those on the Sega Saturn. But, a majority of the games come in the standard CD-style jewel cases making it easy to collect and store.
Parents beware: These games incorporate the first attempts of game ratings. For those that worry and pay attention to what games their children play and try to keep content to a minimum, you will want to check the rating for each game.
Sony PlayStation...loads of games, easy to use controllers and an attractive console design. Own a console that redesigned the industry.
The PlayStation One console was an ultimate breakthrough in gaming history, completely wiping out parts of Sega's releases and out-competing the 3DO and Super Nintendo! Old school gamers choose this system especially for its poor graphics, but addicting gameplay. Polygons were a big thing in 3D gaming, and because the PlayStation One Console held its position in a big time role, the environment in almost 90% of the games was just eye candy for the avid gamer. Seeing just one of these platforms out in the market is worth the purchase, to not only a collector, but to the nostalgic searcher.
This console is an old school but one of the best console that ever made so I rate this 5/5 for an outstanding performance and quality of the product.
Thanks
Top tier publishers, great risk taking platformers and the revolution of RPG's can sum up the 12 year life span of the Sony PlayStation. The starting load up screen, the original analog-less controller- nostalgia just flows like a mad river. Better yet- to this day it just feels right. If you missed out on the original PlayStation then you missed out on a piece of gaming history. Even if you play a crap title like Xena Warrior Princess or a diamond like Final Fantasy VII- this console is the reason video games are what they are today. This console killed the Sega CD, Sega Saturn, deeply scarred the Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64 while being the driving force behind what eventually killed Sega Dreamcast as well as Sega's hardware ambitions as a whole. Found very affordable today there's no reason you shouldn't own one.
Who would have thought that Sony's first step into the game console market would knock out Sega and become an icon.
The PlayStation is a remarkable console with many classic and memorable games to choose from. Many titles got their start and restart with this very console. Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, and others all got their start or re installment with this console.
When compared to today's consoles, the PSX seems way behind times; and it should. It's reached a 15th anniversary as of this writing. But when compared to its past competition from the same era, the PSX stands out among the crowd. This system performs just as good as the Saturn and N64 consoles; including Atari's Jaguar that really never caught on. It might not be seen visually just how much different the PSX is compared to the others; but the games is what makes the PSX worth owning for some classic game play.
The PSX didn't have the dual-analog stick controllers (a.k.a. Dual-Shock) until close to the release of the PS2. And only about a third of the games available for the PSX take advantage of that controller. Personally, I prefer the original controller without the analog sticks...it's lighter and works best with most titles.
If you are the lucky winner of a PSX auction, some games to look for are Final Fantasy 7, Battle Arena Toshinden, Metal Gear, and my personal favorites Gran Turismo 2 and Ridge Racer RR4. The PSX has kid friendly titles as well for those worried about content. Many famous Disney and Nicktoon characters have their own titles and then you have Spyro and Crash to top the list. You can't go wrong with this system.
