I've had mine for a couple of months now and I really enjoy it.It's the Swiss Army Knife of handheld entertainment. Games on it look spectacular! You can download demos and full games right to it from the internet, no download "stations" like the DS. When you can get them to convert properly, movies look excellent also. There is no way to create a playlist for your music that I've seen so far, otherwise it's a good player. The browser that comes with it is a little clunky and doesn't play well with a lot of pages but will generally get you the info you want. The internet radio is a great features and when I figure out how to preset stations it'll be better! If I had constant access to WI-FI then I would like to try the Skype feature but I'm on the road a lot and it would do me no good there.:-) It will be outdated completely in a year or 2 by the likes of the iPhone and the Android but it is still a cool toy with better battery life than any phone out there. Call me old-fashioned but I like for my phone to basically be just a phone, a camera and a PIM!:-) I just hope Sony keeps supporting this for a few more years!
At first glance, the PSP-1000 may look like one of those fat game consoles from the 90s, but, do not be deceived by its looks (or its weight)...
This impressive piece of machine features a powerful processor along with a powerful graphics-processing-unit just begging to be set free on your most demanding tasks. The MIPS R4000 processor, a 333MHz integrated CPU, is what powers this monster, along with 32MB integrated RAM and a power-packed 166MHz GPU with 2MB VRAM to accelerate your media and your games, playing them with fantastic visual quality.
This is not only a gaming device, but also a web browser, music/video player, and one of THE best "geek toy" of all time. With a 4.3inch, 480x272 resolution screen, watch your favorite movies in lifelike quality, play games without squinting and messing your eyes up, or use it for all your geekish homebrew needs. It features Adobe Flash, which is a great bonus. You can stream Shoutcast online radio for FREE as long as you have a wi-fi connection. The speakers are good for their size and the sound level is okay, but, if you really want to get into games or movies, buy a nice bass headphone and rock to your music, videos, and games.
Featuring a 1800mAh lithium-ion battery, you can easily get ~5-6 hours of games or video playback, or ~9-11 hours of audio playback. OR if you're a geek like me, you can dramatically UNDERclock your PSP to 75MHzCPU/50MHzGPU from its default of 266MHz/133MHz or so and increase your battery life significantly. Ahah! but the best part? You can also STOCKclock your PSP to 333MHzCPU/166MHzGPU for the ultimate gaming performance (Sony underclocks their PSP by default to save battery life). THAT IS THE POWER OF HOMEBREW AND CUSTOM FIRMWARE!
Once upon a time, people had to make and use a Pandora battery, which was a real pain for inexperienced, un-geeky people (who often ended up bricking their PSPs), but now, by running a simple program called PRO CFW from inside the PSP, you too can have a hacked and armed PSP within 10 seconds or less, being capable of doing many useful things or running games or homebrew software.
In conclusion, you should get this device for yourself, or for your parents/siblings/children/grandparents. For about ~$50 on Ebay for a used PSP, you will be guaranteed countless hours of pleasure, fun and games from this device for an affordable price.
You definitely are getting what you pay for. Simply put, the PSP is an amazing device - it has crystal clear clarity for movies, flash memory for MP3s, and a large assortment of FUN games (as opposed to the DS - but I will touch more on that later). Really, what more could you want?
I don't mean to trash the Nintendo DS ( I have them both), but they clearly are not in same league. This is probably partially by design - the Nintendo DS (Judging by its assortment of games) is designed for kids under the age of 12. With the exception of Super Mario 64 - I have yet to find one game that I enjoy. The PSP already has a much better selection of games, and games that adults actually want to play - notice there is not a "Madagascar" for the PSP. The PSP is designed to be a total entertainment device.
Here are some comparisons and pros and cons-
PSP 5 out of 5 - really they are as good as you could ever expect
DS- 5 out of 5 - maybe a shade worse than the PSP- but still very good
PSP - 4 out of 5 Has issues with volume (you almost have to wear the headphones) - but plenty of options for tweaking the set-up
DS - 4 out 5 also a little problem with volume , but not bad
PSP- 2.5 out 5 - clearly this is where the PSP underperforms the DS. The Nintendo DS uses a flash type memory compared to the PSP's optical read. There is a large difference between the two.
DS- 5 out of 5 - The Flash memory is much faster
PSP- 4 out of 5 - an already large selection and growing by the day. HUGE advantage over the DS
DS- 1.5 out of 5 in my opinion- it only has 1 good game. Supposedely there will be a metroid game released, but I have been waiting for 8 months.
PSP- Another HUGE advantage over the DS... here is a list of thing you can do on the PSP that you can NOT do on the DS
- Watch/rent movies
- Listen to MP3s off of a flash media card (Much like an ipod)
- view pictures off of your digital camera (or Sony Digital camera at least)
Things you can do on the DS that you can NOT do on the PSP
- draw pictures using a stylus
ADVANTAGE - PSP
Tip: Be VERY careful of the PSP screen not to get it scratched. I can see no easy way of replacing it, and to severely scratch it would be horrible. My advice is (until you can buy the "Real" screen cover) trim a piece of plastic wrap around the screen. The static electricity will cause the plastic wrap to stick and thus protect your screen.
I have purchased an inexpensive case on Ebay for about five bucks. It's made of silicone and completely encases the PSP. Works great and has eased my worried mind!
PLAYS MOVIES WELL, GOOD SIZE VIEWING SCREEN. MY KIDS LOVE PLAYING GAMES ON IT. NICE SELECTION OF MOVIES & GAMES TO CHOOSE FROM. GOT IT AT A GOOD PRICE ON EBAY (UNDER $100 INCLUDING SHIPPING) MY 7 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WILL LOVE IT FOR CHRISTMAS
The PSP came well packaged and we received it quickly, but there were several problems. These problems included: sticky, stuff all over the screen in which we try to wipe but smeared the screen more. The bottom row of buttons do not work including the volume, and select buttons. The back console piece has to have tape on it in order for it to stay in place, and it has to be plugged in the whole time in order to work at all. I feel that not enough information was given about this product and I would have not purchased this item for $90 if I had known about these problems. We would like to have a full refund for this item. Thanks for your cooperation.
