A deluxe camera that still delivers nice results and fun features

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.
Review For: Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80 7.2 MP Digital Camera - Silver

One of Sony´s top of the line Point and shoot that let you go beyond the basics thru some advance features like 3 picture bracketing (+-0.3, +-0.7, +-1.0) ISO 100-3200, VGA video, Optical viewfinder, 3x zoom with Optical stabilizer (dish digital stabilizer, it sucks) multi, center and spot metering, Carl Zeiss Lens (2.8-5.2), prefix focus to 0.5m, 1m, 3m, 7m and infinite distances, flash EV (limited to low and high) and a Real time luminosense histogram.
This review is writen in 2012 so the 7.1 megapixel might seem lacking but the fact is megapixels alone don´t mean a better picture, sensor technology and image processing are more important, still the quality of the picture is very good, better than another digital cam I had which had 12 megapixels. Colors are nice and you get a histogram to better judge the right exposure in case you need EV compensation (+-2).
I have other cameras but I take this one everywhere since is compact and light, its battery has a long life and you shoot around 300-400 pics on a single charge. On the Cons, the noise reduction sometimes is too strong and it can not be turned off; sometimes your pics will look like paintings... iso 3200 is almost unusable, maybe for BW see it and delete it; the shutter button is long and slim which I dislike (prefer round buttons) the viewfinder has no parallel compensation and its relation to the lens changes a lot thru the zoom range; the telephot end of the lens is not really fast (bright) at 5.2, other sonys like the DSC-S700 have faster lenses on the same zoom range; the wide end is a 35mm equivalent which I find not wide enough, more and more manufacturers are opting for a 28mm equiv wide end.
In the end it is a nice digital camera that takes nice photos (which is in the end the important stuff) you wont be dissapointed with this little camera. ATM the value is very good

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80 7.2 Megapixel

Review For: Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80 7.2 MP Digital Camera - Silver

I bought this camera because I was looking for a basic to above basic easy to use camera for vacation and for business. I needed a camera that was small enough to be easy to carry but powerful enough to take clear, sharp pictures.

I found this camera here on Ebay for a very good price. After reading a list of features I decided to go with this model. I made an excellent choice.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80 7.2 Megapixel camera has enough resolution to produce high quality photos in about every situation encountered. It has excellent low-light capabilities as well as sharp colors and high contrast in bright lighting. It also takes very good closeups, although in macro mode the photos have a warp to them that is annoying in some situations.

Battery life is above excellent. With the 8M Memory Stick installed I can take over 200 photos with one charge (LCD ON) and nearly 300 with the LCD off. Many reviews complain that the LCD only has 150,000 pixels compared to comparable models with over 200,000. But the LCD has a very sharp picture and is easy to view. The LCD is for viewfinding and reviewing images anyway so in my opinion the LCD quality is not a major issue.

Another thing often mentioned in other reviews is the complexity of the menu system. This is bogus. The menu system is VERY EASY to learn and much, much easier to use than described. It took me less than 10 minutes to figure out all of the features and that is without even looking at the instructions manual. The "Delete Image" feature, the one most complained about, is actually two button pushes away. Other reviews often describe the delete image function as such a hassle to use it may as well not even be on the camera. Not so!

Other things you should know: The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80 7.2 Megapixel Camera has one of the most advanced image processors made by Sony, so the camera has features other cameras in this class do not have. Such as face recognition (and it really works!), auto light compensation, digital zoom and movie with sound in high quality. The HD feature is only available on still images (not on movies) but to me, who wants PICTURES for use on web pages, Ebay etc., this is a non-issue. The movie feature is excellent and with the 8M Memory Stick the movie feature can record MORE than a T-120 VHS tape can hold!!! You can also break up movies into individual files so you can make more than one movie at a time, selecting which "file" you want to record/edit/add to. And the built-in slide show lets you show your pictures on any TV with A/V inputs, and comes with customizabe background sound!

The camera comes with USB/A/V cable. You need a special HDMI cable to use the HD feature (not included). Also included is the Sony Cybershot CD-ROM but you do not actually need it to access your photos. The camera shows up as a separate mass storage device in Windows (just another hard drive). Any image software can view the pictures (like Photoshop or iPhoto Explorer). The camera's built-in memory and the memory stick are separate folders and you can move pictures around from folder to folder and from drive to drive like any other file on any other hard drive. (In fact, you can move non-photo files, like EXE or PDF files to the camera's memory! Excellent way to hide files on the run!).

Overall, an excellent camera for everyday use and for light to medium business.
I recommend it! And I'm an electronics engineer!

Very Impressed At the Ease of Use and High Quality Pics

Review For: Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80 7.2 MP Digital Camera - Silver

LOVE this Camera! Easy to use, I especially like the dial on the side of camera that lets you go to different modes of operation in a flick. It also has a POWER ON/OFF BUTTON with an LED Green Light. The MACRO mode is one tap away, plus the COLOR is true to life with SONY'S new image processor. The CARL ZEISS Camera Lens puts this one way out in front.

Glad I bought this camera to replace my old clunky one. The size is perfect , and is a SLIM DESIGN, same length as a credit card. Lens retracts so camera is perfectly flat. Plus it will do Mpeg Movies. You'll need to BUY at least a 1 GIG SONY MEMORY STICK PRO to record and play movies in Fine mode. 12min/640Fine, 44min/640standard, 2.57 hrs/320. 1 GIG STICK will store 308 pics. Plenty if your going out for the evening. Buy more if your taking hundreds of high quality shots at a time.

Great Camera for Price

Review For: Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80 7.2 MP Digital Camera - Silver

This camera is to replace an older Olympus model. I decided to buy the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80 because of the reviews it received from Consumer Reports. After looking on Ebay I found one for a great price, around $150. Please note this didn't come with any extras (memory, case, etc.). I used the camera for a day or two and I have found it much more user friendly and quicker than my old Olympus. I also like how compact and light the Sony is, very important to me. However, it does seem that lighting is an issue for me at the start. Maybe I just need to set it differently for indoor shooting, hopefully that is all. But right now the shots I have taken indoors with not much lighting come out a bit discolored (orange tint). Overall I'd buy again, hopefully the updated model will have the lighting issue fixed.

Quality delivered by product

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.
Review For: Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80 7.2 MP Digital Camera - Silver

I purchased this item for my fiancee, nothing to complicated for her, but still get quality picture. Though in technology terms the item is getting old, the product still delivers quality pictures simple to use, simple rechargeable battery, great digital zoom, face recognizable. The new models may be more fancy and quality but this product still delivers for what it is meant to do. Not any dislikes as I was looking for something simple for her. Likes its is small for her purse, rechargeable batteries, and easy point and shoot
