Above-average feature set; nice design.
No optical zoom while recording video; photo quality drops off above ISO 200; above-average chromatic aberration.

This one's got it all. The Cyber-shot DSC-W220/P combines point-and-shoot ease-of-use with advanced features in a sophisticated, compact body. Smile Shutter technology allows you to capture a smile the moment it happens, and the Carl Zeiss 4x optical zoom lens, optical SteadyShot image stabilization, and 12.1-megapixel resolution deliver crisp, clear images. A powerful 12.1-megapixel super HAD CCD image sensor helps you capture gorgeous images with superb contrast and clarity down to the finest detail. With 12.1-megapixels, you can create stunning, photo-quality prints up to A3+ size, or crop your images and still come away with high resolution shots
I bought the Sony dsc-w220 because I already owned a w230 (230 just has a bigger screen than the 220), and wanted another 12 megapixel camera. I looked at the more complex models, and what I didn't like about the newer more expensive ones was that you cannot manually force the camera into any macro setting. IT would decide for itself (automatically). Guess I'm old fashioned and would still like some control over my camera, instead of having it decide what I need for the shot. We have recently used it to take close up pics on metal engraving, and it did superbly. 99% of the shots came out perfect! For a point and shoot compact, it's a great camera to always carry around in your purse (which I always do). It does use up a lot of battery life (more than my 7 megapixel cybershot which I have since sold), though, so I would suggest you invest in a second battery as backup. Small price to pay for the awesome pics it takes! I have also invested in a battery charger that I can use in a car, plugged into the cigarette lighter, which will be great when we travel to foreign countries that have different elec. plugs. Highly recommend this camera!
My older Cyber-shot (DSC-P150) had finally bit the dust. Since I was (as others were) impressed by the overall photo quality, I decided to pick up another one of these cameras, but in a newer model. The DSC-W220 has certainly fulfilled my needs...and then some.
Nicely compact (about the size of a wallet), this camera has some really nice capabilities. First of all, the display is really big at 2.7"! The camera also has some nice modifications for the type of shot you're taking (e.g. close-up, landscape, people, etc.). The flash carries very well, but not past 10 feet or so. Although there is not a viewfinder, I have yet to find any need for it, even outdoors. The camera is not heavy, but DOES feel durable in your hands. Battery lasts a pretty good amount of time, but with a lot of use, will drain at an average amount of time. Photos are extremely crisp and clean, and with a 4GB card, you can hold over 800 at the 12Mp setting.
PROS: Small, compact, and user-friendly. Great photo crispness and detail. Can focus well on macro settings within 2 inches of object. Has built-in MPEG video for fun short videos. Card and battery are easy to install/remove.
CONS: ON/OFF button too recessed, and sometimes difficult to turn on/off unless you use direct finger-tip pressure. Videos are slightly grainy (hey, this is a photo-camera though). Flash not so good beyond 10 feet or so.
All-in-all, this is a great camera with some really nice features. Easy to use and handle for all your photography needs. Good stuff!
I bought this model because it was not in production and I could not find it in camera stores. I had purchased it years ago for its macro, B&W and array of optional features that even some SLR's don't have. It is easy to operate and small enough to be portable and discreet when shooting. When I saw it on ebay at a very reasonable price I jumped on it! To buy a new similar camera would have cost 4 times the amount. It functions wonderfully and I would certainly purchase it again. It was a very good deal. I'm very happy with the camera.
