I specifically choose this model blue ray player because it plays avi files (computer files, no need to convert to a video format most players require to play them). It plays all forms of DVD except dual layer blue ray, which was a minimal disappointment.
It has the ability to hook up to the net, but you have to use Sony's wireless adapter which runs at $70 +. I like that the remote has netfkix and Qriocity buttons, but the adapter is so pricey, not sure I will stop using my Wii for Netflix, since its free.
The player also supports 3d, but you obviously have to have a 3d camera, which are very expensive now. Your TV also has to be 3d-ready, so I won't be using that feature either.
It was much cheaper online than the stores. You will save $75!
All in all, it was definitely worth it just for the fact it reads data discs.
This is a well-featured device, for the price. It is surprisingly small, considering all the features that are built-in. It can go online; do the internet; play YOUTUBE and NETFLIX and other movies, indluding the 3D ones; is controllable via your remote device (cell-phone, etc.); can do whole-house broadcasting; can interface with your WIFI inhouse network; upgrade your 2D dics to 3D; and a lot more. The problem is that this Blu Ray player cannot live in the same system with any other SONY Blu Ray player! The REMOTE CODES are fixed and cannot be changed. In other words the remote control for this machine will also control your other Sony Blu Ray player; and vice versa. I consider that to be a major shortcoming, and therefore, must rate this machine as marginal.
I liked the simplicity of the player, does everything on the box and more. Used the HDMI cable to link it to my sony surround system. I use a PS3 blue ray at the moment which although it says won't play Region 1, it does. The BDS480, to me, seems a lot clearer. I, also, like the fact that if I ever get 3d, it's incorporated into the player. I would definitely deal with the company who sold me this player again.
I really wanted to step up my game in movie veiwing. I've had plenty of Sony products (TV,DVD Player,Laptop, etc) so i trust the brand. This is my first Blu-Ray player and i'm diggin it so far. Can't wait to step up my TV to the next level as well! Used for Netflix several times as well, cool to watch YouTube right on your TV.
bought it to upgrade our viewing ability great picture and ease of use. have not used the 3D do to limited videos availiable with that feature. remote is easy to understand works well with our tv. would of liked it to be 1" shorter so as to fit on shelf.
