This camera is a great camera for beginners and camera enthusiast. My wife wanted to get into better photography and this was her Christmas gift (though I gave it early) The Ai feature 99% of the time sets everything the way you want. The twilight feather (in settings, scenes) takes amazing night photos without a tripod. It does this by taking multiple pictures and merging them and stitching the edges to make it less blurry. A fantastic feature. The flash is seldom needed. I would recommend a 49-55 adapter ring so general filters and such fit it. Most are 55mm even when sold for this camera and if you do not have one their useless. Those adapters are cheap (under $10.00) So far the video and still resolution images have been great and the battery life is good as well. It is easy to use and I recommend doing the firmware update which adds new features and is free.
This review is being written only 3 weeks into my use of the Sony NEX - so my impressions may change with time. Nevertheless, my reasons for buying into Sony's E-mount system have been fulfilled completely, so I can recommend the NEX with great enthusiasm. ----- What's good? Back to my reasons for the original purchase! I have a large collection of old and classic lenses from dozens of "obsolete" cameras, and I have long enjoyed seeing what they'll do today, on modern digital sensors. The NEX system, with its relatively large, high resolution and high quality APS-C sensor - the same sensor used in most of Sony's full size DSLRs - and NEX's phenomenally short, 18mm lens mount-to-sensor distance, is the most affordable way thus far to play with oldtime optics and view camera-like movements (with the aid of oldtime shifting bellows and tilting adapters). Most adapter mounts are cheap and I am having a blast using both rangefinder and SLR lenses of the '40s, '50s, etc. with my NEX-3. Bravo, Sony!! ----- So what could still stand improvement? Well, from my perspective, a number of things: ----- First, get the prices down, Sony. I bought a discontinued but new NEX-3, despite its lower 14 MP sensor, because it cost 1/2 what the improved 16 MP NEX-3C does... and that let me "buy into" Sony's E-mount and left me cash to buy a bunch of Alpa through Zeiss Icon adapters! Sure, I lust after the NEX-7 - much improved with 24 MP, better controls, etc. - but with its $1K+ extra cost... well, I'm not that well-off. Maybe later! ----- Second, Sony should not cripple any basic functions of their low-end NEXs - like they did with the NEX-3's missing, remotely controlled IR shutter release! The common vendor strategy to push customers towards higher-end, higher-profit models they really can't afford is, IMHO, just plain stupid. I can't believe it adds anything to Sony's marketing success; it just drives potential customers to look elsewhere. ----- Third, Sony should reconsider their push to make the NEX system cameras ever smaller - especially when this ends up costing them really useful functionality like in-body shake reduction (which all the NEXs lack). I, and I suspect many others with medium to large hands, could happily work with a future NEX about the size and thickness of the old Olympus OM SLR bodies, and that would allow plenty of space for the missing image stabilization apparatus behind the APS-C sensor! The larger size would also permit fully manual controls as on the NEX-7 and dynamite OLED viewing within the camera body. ----- Fourth... fifth... sixth... well, I could go on and on. If only Sony would ask me! A full-size sensor? Sure. Better support for third parties who might like to produce electronically integrated adapters for non-Sony "legacy" lenses? Sure. Who wants to throw away their multi-thousand dollar investments in Canon, Nikon, Pentax, et al when moving to a new camera "platform"? I submit that the corporate thinking that says "lock customers into our own walled garden by crippling cross-platform compatibility" is short-sighted and counter-productive to sales volume. ----- Still, today's NEX is already a technically great system with tremendous potential. Sony has already made great strides in polishing both their in-camera firmware and later-model hardware - much of which has been retro-fitted to my lowly NEX-3. Again, bravo Sony! I look forward to buying newer, better models in the future, as I can afford them.
I bought this camera + lens kit first of all since I wanted a compact camera that has good quality in less than ideal lighting conditions. The APS-C sensor enables this for real. I've compared the results to 4/3 sensor cameras like Olympus's, and those just can't compete, at all, including in focus time/accuracy, response time, overall speed. The level of noise and retained detail in low light by the NEX-3 really is comparable to that of a decent DSLR.
Frankly I would have gotten the Fugi X100, if I didn't mind paying 3 times as much as I did for this adequately compact APS-C camera and being limited to fixed 23mm lens only (though with superb brightness and overall quality). There is no other camera that can compare to the NEX-3 at its price range, not even close. The APS-C sensor just can't be beat by smaller sensors, forget it.
Other than in less than ideal shooting conditions, the NEX-3 with the 18-55mm lens generally gives lovely results with pretty much anything. It can even handle macro shots nicely. The color accuracy is simply excellent, and the automatic white balance is very accurate, which is very important for me. It hasn't failed me yet. The Intelligent Auto mode really is "intelligent" and usually chooses very good, suitable settings.
The sharpness is definitely less than stellar on pictures' edges, but it's not bad, and center sharpness is very adequate. This is one area where the differences from a serious DSLR lens are apparent.
When set to 24mm and 55mm, the lens will have no noticable distortion whatsoever in any condition. Keep that in mind when you read reviews that mention the optical distortion of the lens. They all (except one professional review I've read) fail to mention this. Inbetween, there may be more distortion, but not so bad as to always be noticable. 18mm obviously has serious distortion, but thankfully, nothing that can't be fixed with Adobe Lightroom's excellent lens distortion correction. Since I mention that, it's a good time to mention the usefulness of RAW files. You don't have to recompress a JPEG file when you edit stuff, not to mention other obvious advantages of post fixing in RAW.
The continuous shooting works perfectly. Everything works as expected, except of course autofocus which doesn't always work properly (not with this, not with any camera) in which case the manual focus is very handy.
There are many more things I could refer to, but I'd just like to let you know mainly about the picture quality. It's exactly what I expected and for the first time ever, I'm not disappointed by a compact camera. It may not be as compact as a really compact camera, but it's far more compact than standard DSLR cameras, very light and comfortable. I can finally get proper quality indoors, in pretty dark places even, and with such a small camera I don't have to look like a paparazi to anyone or attract too much attention.
Have the camera for about 2 months and have taken a lot of landscape photos on our recent vacation. All came out very sharp and the menu items are very easy to access and understand. Enjoyed the fact that it was a compact that could be easily carried, however, large enough that one can hold it steady for sharp focus (I had a problem I have with regular compact cameras).
Am not interested in video or movies so did not miss this feature. Overall, the camera took pictures that are comparable to my Cannon 30D.
Perfect overall to my present needs. This little electronic gadget is handy and sleek to carry anywhere portable. 55mm lens gives good performance in full light conditions and low light conditions without flash and with flash gives unbelievable pics .If you are an artist and interested in photography it just amazes you. One word to describe it not ultra-portable as 5 series but still portable DSLR quality Need to upgrade with newer firmware to give more and accurate performance. I am satisfied for the performance for this cost .Yeah I bought it in offer .Pic’s are awesome.399 $ offer is directly available from Sony website .So, if you can get it for less than that will be good offer. Sure never disappoints you and keep up to your expectations still if you have Nikon 24mm wide angle then you can create wonders with this NEX3
