I am so glad that I got this DVD for as cheap as I did. The movie had all the intentions of being a good movie but falls way short of accmplishing it's goal. Charlize Theron is flawless in her role and Chris Hemsworth manages to deliver as the Huntsman. Kristen Stewart is the fly in the ointment though. Simply put, this young lady just can NOT act! She keeps the same clueless look on her face for the entire movie and is just awful! The special effects are mediocre at best and the plot suffers from shallow performances by Ms. Stewart. I have watched this two times in order to give it the benefit of the doubt. I will be watching it one more time- as it is placed in the trash where it belongs and hauled to the curb for pick-up from the garbage collector.
I was pleasantly surprised how good a film this was! I might have rated it 4 out of 5 but I want to balance some of the negative reviews. Some great performances as well as incredible sets, costumes, and weapons (I hate chintzy looking weapons). Beautiful design throughout. Nice twist on the classic fairy tale. Just very enjoyable overall. I'm surprised that some others faulted the special effects - I thought they were at least as good if not better that 'block buster' films like Hunger Games.
This wasn't a bad movie; it's just that I had the feeling I'd seen it before...and not just because the Snow White story is so familiar. Kristen Stewart was still playing Bella Swan. Sam Claflin as the prince physically resembled Robert Pattinson. Charlize Theron's evil queen was Angelique from DARK SHADOWS. Chris Hemsworth as the Huntsman was Han Solo in THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. Somehow, these familiar characters ended up in a sword-fighting epic that went on way too long and seemed like another chapter of THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Maybe it's the fact that both stories involve dwarfs? I would have liked this film much more if they had focused on the "evil" queen's backstory. The audience gets glimpses of how and why Ravenna turned out the way she did. If there had been more, it would have been more interesting than watching Bella Swan (oops, I mean Snow White) swing a sword. Definitely worth watching once, especially if you root for Ravenna. The problem is, I think you're supposed to root for Snow White.

the movie introduces snow (kristen stewart) as the daughter of king magnus (noah huntley), a benevolent leader who falls into depression when his wife dies. sensing an opportunity, the evil sorceress ravenna (charlize theron) tricks the king into marrying her, then murders him in his bed. this leaves young snow parentless, and ravenna imprisons her. eventually after snow has grown to womanhood, she escapes prompting ravenna to send a skilled hunter (chris hemsworth) to recapture her.
this is actually a great movie. a cross between disney's version of snow white and lord of the rings. this movie is worth picking up and watching
