Sly 2 manages to take the style and feel of the first game, and improve on almost every element.
What's stayed the same?
It's still a solid platformer with easy to get into controls. S2:BOT also carries on the feel of a slick and stylish 70's spy movie. The soundtrack and cut scenes in particular help carry this feeling along. Humour is still alive and well in this game to keep things spicy, which is highlighted by the good voice acting.
What's better?
I think this game looks better than the first. The colour, graphics, and character models look improved and refined.
The mini games that break up the platforming action are more enjoyable for me this time around. I get the feeling that the developers are definite retro-game-lovers, and their influence is well received by me.
The goals of the levels are more interesting. I actually feel like Sly is a thief this time around, due to the fact that I'm stealing something other then keys. The heist plans are also much more interesting and creative with added challenge.
They've done away with the 1 hit kills as well (expect for the surprise attacks). This means that while your average foes may be a little tougher, you are too. I welcome that Sly can take a bit more of a beating this time around.
What's simply different?
They changed the way the power-ups work. There's only 1 set of bottles to find per episode, as apposed to per level in each episode. Most of your power ups are accumulated by purchasing them with the coins you've collected, and profit from selling the loot you've stolen. It's not that I necessarily like this more or less, it's just different.
This time around, you also get to play as Sly, Bentley, and Murray. This does of course mix up the game-play, which is nice, but I find the split between the three is a little too even. I'm playing a Sly Cooper game to play as Sly Cooper. I think he's the coolest character of the 3, so naturally I would like to be playing as him most of the time.
An all around improvement, and a great platformer for a range of game-players. Sly 2 continues to build on the worthiness of investment into the series.
I love this game because of it's unique character designs, levels, and how they let you play Murray and Bently. Murray is not the smartest in the group, but he can pack a real punch and make getting money easy. Bently allows you to bomb enemies from the rooftops and hack into computers.
The second thing that is my favourite in this game is when Bently is hacking a computer and Murray and Sly have to beat the heck out of everyone thats coming. It's a classic move.
I only have a few complaints about this game: It's very short. You can beat this game in several hours. However, this can be proven wrong because of two good things: Replayability and collecting.
The second thing I have to complaint on is that in Sly 2, the stealth is practically GONE! In the last game, you were afraid to get near a guard because they'd kill you in one hit. Now, you sneak behind the guard and kill him in 1 hit with about 4 enemies coming to kill you.
I decided to buy this game because I had played it before when I rented it from GameFLY some time ago. Great game. Now, it has been several years, I bought myself another PS2 and got the best games I could think, and the Sly franchise has never let me down. Shell shaded platformers always stay cool looking and stealing stuff is classic.
Now, for people who don't know what this game is about, I'll tell you. It's a shell shaded platform where you play as a human-like raccoon. At the beginning of the game, you try to steal the Clockwerk parts which had been taken to a police station. This mission teaches you how to use all three characters and there moves. I'd tell you something further about the mission, but I don't do spoilers.
-Mihailnoize!
Sly is one of the best series on the market. One of the best looking platformers for the PS2. Cel-shaded graphics make this title look just like a cartoon. And this is one of the deeper story lines of any platform series or any game at all for that matter. It's just like playing through a comic book or something. The controls are just as good as the first but it is easy to miss jumps and can tend to be a little frustrating when you do miss. Collecting bottles for secrets is still here but the rewards are not half as great. Sadly all of the powers you collected in part one are not here either. But the great characters are still here and I can't just help but love the series. And now there is much more freedom to deal with than the linear levels from the first game. This can make the game a bit draggy at times but boss battles and mini-games break up the tediousness on a regular basis so you don't get bored. All in all this is a worthy sequel that breaks away from formula in a good way. Must have game that is fun for the whole family. 5/5
As a mom, I worry about the content of many video games, even the games that are given an E rating (E=for everyone). I can only speak from the stand point of a parent with a eleven year old son, but the day comes when boys want to stop playing what my son refers to as "baby games" and wants something more challenging. After reviewing Sly Cooper Band of Thieves, I decided to give it a chance. My son is very happy with the graphics, as well as the challenges the game offers. I have found nothing inappropriate or controversial about Sly Cooper Band of Thieves. There are battles, but nothing graphic. POW! BANG! BOOM! and the villain is gone. While Sly Cooper is a thieving fox who steals to regain his families lost treasures, the game revolves around friends and teamwork to get the job done. Based on what you as a parent feel comfortable allowing your child to play, I would highly recommend the game for kids ages 10+. Five Stars (on a scale of 5) on the Mom's Approval Rate Scale.
I would place the game in the same catagory with the Spyro and Crash Bandicoot Series.
I am really enjoying this game. The music is cool, the graphics are cool and the gameplay is really interesting. It's what I like about games. I tire of the games where you are just walking around shooting everything or just regular platformers or even racing games. This one keeps my interest.
You sneak around trying not to be seen. You can pickpocket baddies, steal things, break things, and there are a few melee fights strewn around.
The melee fights can bet a bit long winded, but the gameplay makes up for that. My kids love watching me play it, they sneak around the house for a while after a session.
The ambiance of the game is dark...not dark like spooky, dark like everything is at night, so I have found that playing it during the day is sometimes not the best because of the lights coming in from the windows.
The game feels like an Oceans 11. It's quirky and cool and looks like a comic book. I have laughed several times and the crazy characters.
I really like this game. It made it to the greatest hits, but that just means it sold really well. I can see why.
It's mostly a ptaformer with tons of missions and a great story, and the gameplay is a little different than other platformers...ou have to sneak around. It's fun.
