|This Sigma APO 120-300 mm F2.8 EX IF HSM lens represents a revolutionary leap forward in ease of use. The transforming a large-aperture F2.8 300 mm lens into a zoom lens allows you to determine the picture composition you want without having to change your vantage point. It has two SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements in the front lens group and one in the rear lens group for excellent correction of chromatic aberration. This model, equipped with an HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) combines high AF speeds with whisper-quiet operation. Since the front lens group does not rotate, the lens accepts a circular polarizing filter. And by adding an APO Teleconverter, which is sold separately, you can use this lens as a 168-420 mm F4 AF tele-zoom lens with a 1.4x Teleconverter, or as a 240-600 mm F5.6 AF ultra-telephoto zoom lens with a 2x Teleconverter.|

I wanted this lens for its range and its wide bright aperture. It is sharp. Not as sharp as its OS replacement but the price used was irresistible.
The motor is not as fast as I wanted it to be. My Sigma 50-500 was faster motorwise but not by much. It runs silent. The lens' feel is solid. It's rings move smoothly - focusing and zoom.
The lens works great with the Sigma 1.4x TC and even with the 2.0x. It focuses the same with or without the TCs mentioned. The only downside to the TCs is the sharpness. This can be offset by pinching the aperture.
It is a big and heavy lens. I thought I could hand hold it effectively but no. It's the heaviest lens I have bought to date. I had to buy a heavier tripod and head because it made my SLIK 700DX wobbly. Now after using it for several weeks, I know I now need a Gimbal to use the lens effectively.
I am a NIKON user and there was no NIKON lens with the features I wanted that covered this range. I have a NIKON 400 f/2.8 that is VERY heavy. I have a NIKON 18-200 that is not a very fast lens. Nikon does make a 80-400 but it is a fairly slow lens and cannot reasonably take a tele-extender. The 100-300 F/4 was light enough to hand hold and fast enought that if desired I could put a tele-extender on it. With the telextender the lens is 420mm at f/5.6. The only feature I would like to have had is vibration reduction. The lens is excellent and all reviews confirmed that it would be! Check this lens out for your photographic needs.
