|The use of aspherical lens allows a large aperture F2.8 (at the wide-angle setting) in a compact body. It also reduces aberration and improves optical performance. SIGMA's unique four-group zoom system satisfactorily compensates for astigmatic aberration and distortion aberration throughout the zoom range.|

I purchased this as my 3rd Sigma out of 12 lenses. I wanted an all-around, full frame, light, fast to reasonably fast zoom, knowing that the sweet spot will never be 2.8 but hopefully it will be no greater than a 4. I got mine for under $90.00 including shipping. It is a primarily plastic, and I like it best around F4. My biggest issue with it is the fact that the zoom ring and focus ring are reversed (front to back) from Nikon configuration (anti-intuitive) and the zoom functions backward. This means that every time I pick it up, my first two shots take a minute and after that motor memory kicks in and it is fine (it's a left handed lens if there ever was one). I also have the Sigma 70-200 and 120-300 2.8 lenses. I find Sigma to be exactly what I expect- a 40% to 60% cost equivalent to a Nikon which delivers more than 40%-60% of the quality. Sigma is the only generic lens manufacturer I've been pleased with. Sigma lenses are, in my experience +/- 70% of a Nikon quality for about 1/2 the cost. If you need to make a living with a lens, buy Nikon. If you want a good product for the price, understanding that you get what you pay for, Sigma is a nice alternative. I run this lens on a D700 and it reacts and focuses fast. It isn't as crisp or smooth as a Nikon...but it is worth easily 2x what I paid for it and if I break it....well, it cost less than $90? What kind of a lens can you buy for $90? FYI - I love my other two Sigmas and the 70-200 rivals my Nikon 50mm f/1.4 for favorite child status in my bag. This one has a nice range, I like it as a walk-around, don't know what I'll want to shoot lens.
Overall condition was excellent. Perfect lens for my hobbie as a race car photographer. The 2.8 lens allows the most light in on low light conditions of night racing. After seeing this lens I searched ebay for another on for my Photographer friend and found one in simular condition. I purchased that one too. He was just as satisfied with that one as I was with this one. The auto focus is a feature I was looking for along with the range delivered with this lens. I would recomend this lens if you have a Nikon camera and are looking for a value.
Excellent lens, the macro effects are outstanding, this is what I was looking for in a micro lens. I prefer to use MF on macro photography as it gives me more control of the background.
