Album Notes
English folk outfit Mumford & Sons' full-length debut owes more than a cursory nod to bands like the Waterboys, the Pogues, and the Men They Couldn't Hang. The group's heady blend of biblical imagery, pastoral introspection, and raucous, pub-soaked heartache may be earnest to a fault, but when the wildly imperfect Sigh No More is firing on all cylinders, as is the case with stand-out cuts like "The Cave," "Winter Winds," and "Little Lion Man," it's hard not to get swept up in the rapture. Like their London underground folk scene contemporaries Noah & the Whale, Johnny Flynn, and Laura Marling, Mumford & Sons' take on British folk is far from traditional. There's a deep vein of 21st century Americana that runs through the album, suggesting a healthy diet of Fleet Foxes, Arcade Fire, Sufjan Stevens, Blitzen Trapper, and Marah. That melding of styles, along with some solid knob-twiddling from Arcade Fire/Coldplay producer Markus Dravs, helps to keep the record from completely sinking into the quicksand of its myriad slow numbers -- tracks like "I Gave You All," "Thistle & Weeds," and "After the Storm" are pretty and plain enough, but they neuter a band this spirited. Sigh No More is an impressive debut, but one that impresses more for its promise of the future than it does its wildly inconsistent place in the present. [A Deluxe Edition of Sigh No More was released in December 2010, and featured the original album, a second disc of 12 live recordings, and a DVD that included all three installments of the documentary "Gentlemen of the Road."] ~ James Christopher Monger

Editorial Reviews
Soul-stirring and for much of the time uplifting, the bangs of their banjo and euphoric bluegrass beats make this lot's trade seem untouchable...
Clash

The unashamedly universal themes are matched by the group's booming sound and imagery that stretches out over space and time.
Paste

3.5 stars out of 5 -- Mumford's desperation, elevated in TNT dynamics, can be thrilling...

Worth the purchase, especially at non-retail pricing.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

Like many others; it's few and far between that I still by cd's. I do find myself often puchasing cd's for bands that I like a few songs, but the group just hasn't made it big yet. Mumford & Sons are starting to gain a bit more notoriety among mainstream radio across the U.S. and have a few songs on this record that have heard radio time. With this disc; if you've heard any of their songs, you know what to expect on this disc. It's a unique style (why I'm such a fan) that doesn't just appear in a couple songs. It's throughout all their music and will garner some very loyal fans while turning others off quickly. Since you're reading this review, chances are you have an interest and I therefore recomend this disc. I've enjoyed adding these songs to my collection and think you will too.

Great band from the UK.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

Mumford and Sons are one of the best bands out there today. Their music is original and unique. Sigh No More is a great album and they followed it up by another great album titled Babel. The concert that they performed at Red Rocks in Colorado was spectacular. I am a big fan and will be waiting for their next production.

Fantastic CD

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

My husband and I both love this CD. I have also given it to 3 friends to burn. The lyrics are innovative, the melodies addictive. A nice change to a lot of the repetative lyrics on the market today. Only one song on CD we don't really like.

Beautiful Banjo Music.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

Very beautifully written and personal songs from a great sounding band. If you don't like banjos in an almost rock setting you will not like this music. Very nice harmony's and overall a very clean sound from all band mates.

I could not find this CD in my local Walmart, but I did find in on Ebay. I am most satisfied with the CD and listen regularly.
