Movie synopsis
Otto Preminger's follow-up to his massively successful LAURA, WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS is a film noir set in postwar New York, where corruption and violence run rampant. Based on a novel by William L. Stuart, the atmospheric film stars Dana Andrews as Sergeant Mark Dixon, a detective whose brutal tactics have landed him in hot water with his superiors. When he accidentally kills a murder suspect, he tries to divert suspicion from himself and blame the death on his nemesis, crime boss Tommy Scalese (Gary Merrill, ALL ABOUT EVE), whom Dixon is obsessed with taking down. He is close to achieving his goal when he becomes involved with the dead man's wife, the beautiful Morgan Taylor (Gene Tierney, LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN, LAURA), which suddenly changes everything.

Reunion Movie of Gene Tierney and Dana Andrews

In this 1950 star-studded, film noir movie, Dana Andrews plays Mark Dixon, a tough NYC cop whose reputation has been tarnished by his over the top behavior. And then he busts an illegal dice game sponsored by crime boss Tommy Scalese (Gary Merrill of "All About Eve"), who just happens to be the protege of Mark's father, a criminal in his own right.

The plot sounds complicated, doesn't it? It is. At the dice game, the big winner, Morrison, has been murdered because he wouldn't stay and lose some of his $19,000 winnings. And the man who brought him to the dice game is Paine (Craig Stevens of "Peter Gun" fame). When Mark goes to question him about the game, he accidentally kills him (Paine) when they get into a rift.

Just as in "Laura", Gene Tierney does not make an appearance until 1/3 into the movie. She is Paine's wife, Morgan Taylor, a beautiful model, who is separated from Paine and living with her father, Jiggs Taylor (Bert Freed).

The plot gets even more complicated when Mark chooses to dump the body of Paine in the river because he is already in trouble with his boss Lt. Thomas (Karl Malden). And that becomes the central plot of the movie. Can Mark escape being in trouble for the murder of the witness Paine? And to make matters worse, he falls in love with his wife Morgan and she for him.

Oleg Cassini (Gene Tierney's husband at the time) makes a cameo in this movie. He plays Morgan's modeling boss as she displays some of his creations when we are first introduced to her.

This movie is a nice follow up to "Laura." The only thing that it lacks is a theme song that ranks as highly as the theme song to "Laura."
