Movie synopsis
In the third installment of the wildly popular SHREK series of computer-animated movies, everyone's favorite hygienically challenged green ogre (voiced by Mike Myers) faces both parental and royal responsibility when his wife, Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz), finds out that she is pregnant and that her father, King Harold (John Cleese), is on his death bed. The shock of these revelations leads Shrek on a journey with his loyal companions Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) to seek out another heir to the throne--an awkward young boy named Artie Pendragon (Justin Timberlake). Waiting in the wings is the scheming Prince Charming (Rupert Everett), who sees the perfect opportunity to make his own bid for power and rallies a villainous crew to attack the castle.Taking over the reins from director Andrew Adamson, Raman Hui and Chris Miller fill the land of Far, Far Away with even more fairy-tale characters in SHREK THE THIRD. Although this takes away from Shrek's own screen time, it introduces the highly amusing Princess Squad--which includes Snow White (Amy Poehler) and Cinderella (Amy Sedaris)--and the bullying Lancelot (John Krasinski), among others. And, as always, this SHREK outing features many pop-culture references, even managing to nod to two horror films (THE EXORCIST and ROSEMARY'S BABY) in a single shot. The movie also allows for more hilarious interplay between Donkey and Puss in Boots, resulting in a comedic adventure tale that, while over-populated, is still undeniably entertaining.

3 THUMBS UP

Review For: Shrek the Third (DVD, 2007, Full Screen Version)

Right off the bat, Third had massive shoes to fill. The second Shrek, by far the series' sharpest installment, also happens to be one of the funniest animated comedies I've ever seen. It's also the third-highest grossing film of all time . In comparison, this new sequel cannot measure up to its immediate predecessor. Third more closely resembles the original Shrek, hinging its fate on a rescue mission (of sorts) that's designed to bring the titular, bitter homebody a little bit closer to his beloved swamp

Subversive humor, long the calling card of the Shrek films, is present here but in shorter supply. A dream sequence involving a wave of baby ogres invading Shrek's cottage gets its biggest laugh when the scene shifts abruptly to a textbook nightmare that shows Shrek giving a commencement speech at his college graduation wearing a cap but missing his gown. The Shrek team assumes their audience has matured since the ogre's 2001 debut, so it doesn't hesitate to toss off jokes about Hooters, baby making, and parenting perils, knowing full well these gags will reach maximum impact at an altitude higher than the average adolescent head.

Third is a short comedy (running barely 90 minutes), and the funniest bits are in the trailers: Shrek and Fiona bumbling through their royal duties in the requisite opening montage; Donkey and Puss switching bodies after new character Merlin (Eric Idle) casts an inappropriate spell. When the sharp sarcasm wanes, Shrek smashes objects or falls back on a flatulence joke. Ninety minutes of this is more than enough.

It goes without saying that the cutting-edge animation impresses. In this installment, our main ogre looks more human -- Shrek actually resembles the late Carroll O’Connor in this outing -- and the human characters behave more like ogres. Unfortunately, Prince Charming is a minor foil compared to his mom, the Fairy Godmother (voiced with devilish wit by Jennifer Saunders in part two), and the conflict sustaining Third withers rather quickly.

Thankfully, there is the family issue, and Shrek the Third concludes with a choreographed home-from-the-nursery routine that’s frantic, caring and -- again -- constructed with parents in mind. Some might think this is a natural end for Shrek and Fiona, but parents know their fun is just beginning.

THIS IS A MUST BUY

3rd Times the Charm...but so was the 2nd...and..the 1st

Very simple. If you liked the 1st and you liked the 2nd prepare to like the 3rd. When Fiona's father and King of Far Far Away passes away, the clumsy Shrek becomes the immediate successor of the throne. However, Shrek decides to find the legitimate heir Artie in a distant kingdom with his friends Donkey and Puss in Boots to be able return to his beloved house in the swamp with the pregnant Fiona. Meanwhile, the envious and ambitious Prince Charming joins the villains of the fairytales plotting a coup d'état to become the new king. Stars Mike Myers,Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz,ect,ect,ect.......

Shrek 3 Good For The Whole Family

Review For: Shrek the Third (DVD, 2007, Full Screen Version)

My kids now range from 10-16 in age and they all loved Shrek 1 & Shrek 2. We had heard Shrek 3 was a let down but I could not see Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, Justin Timberlake or any other star in this movie letting Shrek 3 fail.

Without giving everything away; Shrek3 is mainly about Prince Charming's attempt at gaining his kingdom back while Shrek struggles with the thought of being the future king of Far Far Away and becoming a daddy...in the future...

Shrek 3 did not disappoint. It was just as funny as the first two, the story flowed well and the graphics keep getting more lifelike. Even my better half who really does not like kiddy movies, laughed out loud many times during the film. My 16 year old loved the Led Zeppelin and Heart music *redone by Fergie* moments.

These films have a perfect mix of safe, clean, positive message, funny kid humor, mixed with things adults can find entertaining as well.

It will definitely be a keeper in this house.

Lovely movie!

I decided to buy Shrek the Third b/c I already own the previous two movies and all were very enjoyable to watch. I am glad to complete the set with the third movie! Micheal Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy, Antonio Banderas and even Justin Timberlake made this one of my all time favorite animated movies!
