Edwards .Right out of the gate on this self-titled inaugural, Shooting Star brings on the schmaltz but gets away with it because the tracks exhibit so much heart. Most of these well-aimed cuts concern surviving and prospering. Expert musicianship propels this Kansas City sextet through the general rock heartland on a holy crusade. No one else could have made "Just Friends" so poignant yet positive. "Tonight" is most excellent, the violin creating a pop Kansas (but way cooler). The porch-swinger "Rainfall" recalls prime Poco, and "Midnight Man" burns better than the James Gang number of the same name. At the end of the rainbow waits "Last Chance," flat-out one of the finest songs ever -- kettle drums, strings, and guitars build to a crescendo that will bring tears. This song ties with "When the Levee Breaks" as the greatest album-closer of all time (nullified by the CD reissue, which adds the worthy "Wild in the Streets"). Shooting Star doesn't get enough credit. ~ Doug Stone

Shooting Star first CD

Created: 03/09/10
These guys were great. you can hear the diverse talent . key note: they are directly responsible for virgin Records being the billion dollar company they are today.back in 1978, Virgin was a very small, international only label, they could not land a talented band here in the US. Gary West was grade school friends with the brother that Virgin's international office and as a favor, chose to invite Virgin to be among the 3 companies they would look to sign with. Apparently, Virgin made the lowest $ bid, but Gary is all about integrity and felt the gentleman from Virgin had their best interest at hand. they signed w/ Virgin, released this album, Virgin got other bands to follow and now they make millions. All because a little known musician named Gary West also puts integrity above $ signs. Very refreshing!

I have the vinyl version of this album from 1979. My favorite song was "Last Chance". It is a typical orchestral rock song from that era. For those born in the 70's or 80's they may not have heard it, but it was quite popular in the early 80's. To hear it again in the remastered edition was wonderful - it was just as good as I remembered. The rest of the album/CD is good as well. Give it a chance, you will not be disappointed.

Wow!!! Talk about a blast from the past. My husband and I are talking about 1979 and the Skyline and seeing this band, and it made me want to look this debut album up and buy it for my husband as a surprise. Both of us are from the Kansas City area and grew up listening to this band. Was a great find!
