This is a fun film, especially if you’re looking for escape and something where you don’t have to think. It’s also a reunion experience if you’ve seen the television series. There are sufficient flashbacks to the series that help provide context for those new to S&TC, so it’s not necessary to have seen the television episodes to enjoy the film.
The stories of the four girls are consistent with their characters, all a little self-absorbed and materialistic. Samantha is the most interesting character in the film, as she was in the series. Torn between her free spirited sexual desires and society’s expectations, her conflicts were the most credible and entertaining.
Maranda’s character didn’t resonate as well in the film. Her ongoing separation from Steve didn’t seem consistent with her analytical self. Her character was short-sheeted in the film.
Charlotte is always a gas and didn’t disappoint in maintaining her Pollyanna approach to life. It would have been nice to see more of her life with her family.
Carrie is a fun main character when she is with the rest of the girls, but her overreactions within her relationship became tiresome and threatened the credibility of the story. Of course, the ending is predictably a happy one.
If you enjoyed the television series, you’ll enjoy this film. If you have a passion for high fashion and glam, there’s plenty of eye candy for the materialistic. Thankfully it’s not so over the top to make those of us less interested in designer things too sick. Except Carrie’s big wedding attire – that was ridiculous.
Overall, I’d recommend this film. It’s a chick flick to be sure, but I’d love to see a sequel. One that is a little more realistic in following the lives and loves of these characters.
Sex & The City - The Movie - ENJOYED THE SUPRISES!! The movie stayed true to the series, which I also loved... I enjoyed seeing them older and a little more mature, but still had the no holds barred sex talk that we all know and love, for example, I will never look at crayons and coloring the same again! The fashion did not dissappoint either...the girls were all beautiful. I was also very happy with all characters being played by the original actors, that is the way it should be and I also enjoyed the addition of a couple of new ones. The beginning of the movie is great for anyone who has not seen the series...it completely catches you up, so if watching it with hubby/boyfriend/girlfriend that has not seen the series, they will not be lost, so good move on the producer and directors part to add that in the beginning. I both laughed and cried in this movie, it was great to see some "old friends" and to see what they were up to...Sarah Jessica Parker is very good at at both comedy and drama and so are the rest of the actors, so it is a well made movie.. It is really in a class of it's own! So, if you loved the series, see the movie, and if you haven't seen the series, don't be afraid that you will be lost, and remember...the whole series is already waiting for you on DVD! Thanks for reading this review and make sure to mark that it was helpful - Have a great day!
First off I loved Sex & the City the HBO television series. When Sex & the City - the movie, came out, I went and watched it at the theatres. I absolutely loved it and I decided I wanted to own the DVD. Since EBay is the most convenient place to purchase a great array of goods, I went ahead and purchased the movie I adore on EBay.
Why I liked the movie?
A great number of reasons: the script, the theme, the acting, the gorgeous presentation (high end fashion, clothes, shoes, purses and accessories we all women fantisize of), and it's undeniable appeal to the women genre.
Furthermore, as a grown up women, I went through the pain and tribulations of past relationships and breakups, the horrors of dating, and the comfort of having girlfriends around for moral support; therefore I can relate to some of the experiences and stories in the series and the movie.
Carrie Bradshow's on & off decade long relationship w/ Mr. Big coming then re-appearing in her life kept the story line and suspense going. I felt hurt when he became terrified and didn't show up for his long-awaited wedding, yet joyous and moved to tears at the happy ending! It was the happy ending every girl dreams of.
In other words, ABSOLUTELY LOVED THE MOVIE! Looking forward for the sequel!
I think that sums it up!
It was a great movie. It starred Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon. Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) continue to juggle careers, relationships, motherhood and life in Manhattan. They realize that true friendship never goes out of style. It really made me think of the show. I bought it because it was a terrific price.
I was afraid this movie would be a let-down after a great final season of the series.
Was I wrong! This movie delivers and may even top the series. Everyone has moved on a little but also is as I remembered them - Carrie in her avant-guard high-fashion (don't buy me a ring - just give me a great closet) and steamy partnership with Big, Miranda (still a workaholic and just as wittily ascerbic -- apropos Halloween costumes: Witch or sexy kittne -- those are the only choices for women!), Charlotte (finally fulfilled in a loving relationship with Harry), and Samantha (still with Smith but struggling with monogamy).
The trouble starts when Carrie and Big decide to marry; but the wedding becomes a highly orchestrated freight train that terrifies Big. He flees the church but almost immediately recovers his nerve -- an instant too late. In a classic scene, Carrie beats him with her bouquet of roses and her friends close ranks around her, taking her away, ultimately on a honeymoon for four.
On her return, Carrie starts a new life without Big, but she doesn't seem to date again, a big clue about how things will end up. After adopting a baby, Charlotte becomes pregnant and, fittingly, her water breaks while she is upbraiding Big. But it is shoes rather than Charlotte that lead to the suitable and satisfying ending.
