Finally I've found a set of headphones that I love. I've thrown away hundreds of dollars over the last 10 years, searching for cans that sound good and are comfortable to wear. I've had Audio Technica W1000's (wood) that sounded good but were totally awkward and uncomfortable to wear. I bought an earlier set of Senn. HD 600's along with the Cardas caables (these were an earlier model from 2004. I hated the lack of crisp mids and highs. There were others too, that all ended up on EBAY. I decided to try these HD598's because the reviews sounded very promising. I wasn't disappointed. I love them. They feel "just right". The sound has "presence" yet the lows and highs seem seamless and well balanced. The lows are solid without being overwhelming. The soft velour cushions and just the right amount of ear pressure make them comfortable enough to wear for hours. I have read negative comments about the appearance but personally I think they look very classy and considering the reasonable price, the build quality is just fine for me. I also like the fact that the cord plugs into the left earpiece, making it easy to replace. To be clear, I do have a set of Sony "closed" back headphones that are more portable that I also like and use for travel. But for serious listening at home, these are my favorites and I give these a solid 5 stars.
Perfect, clear and delicious sound.
Awesome look.
Good price for an item of this quality range.
Extremely comfortable.
The best headphones I ever had, extremely glad I bought them.
The good:
- Comfort is superb. I far prefer the vinyl-covered headband vs. the microfibre on the less expensive Sennheiser HD5x8 models.
- Delineation and transient response is excellent.
- High end extension and detail is excellent.
The middle:
- 3m (10 foot) cable is great for home audio setup, bad for portable.
- 50 ohm impedance means portable players can power the HD598 headphones, but some portable players (eg. iPhone 4) struggle a little and could definitely benefit from a separate headphone amp.
- 1/4" plug is great for home receivers, but you have to use the 3.5mm adapter (included) for portable players and the adapter + plug makes the connection very long and awkward.
The bad:
- The looks. Creme and fake wood? Some people might like it. Not me.
- Lack of bass extension. This is the one failing of these headphones. What bass exists (mid-bass, really), is distortion-free and well-controlled with tight transients, but there is a lot of low-end missing. Decent response at 50Hz, still audible at 40Hz (but quiet), nothing much below that, unfortunately.
- A touch of harshness, sibiliance and distortion in the high end.
*Note - using a powerful and clean headphone amp improves the bass and treble issues a little bit. On the flip side, using a lower-quality amp (eg. iPhone) makes them even worse.
Final Verdict:
The good outweighs the bad, but there is still definite room for improvement. Given the price, these are worth consideration, but they are not a "slam dunk" or a "must buy". If you favor strong bass, look elsewhere. If you favor mid-range clarity and wearing comfort, these are a winner. The looks are love 'em or hate 'em. And the HD598 are definitely better suited to in-home use vs. portable use.
From a standpoint of appearance you'd not find finer. The quality and finish are second to none. The comfort of the ear pads is really good...you could listen for hours in comfort. If I compare them to my Audiovox 808 they come in second and yet cost much more. Across the entire music spectrum they are great...but lack a little in low frequency bass. All in all they must be rated as excellent.
The design is great, sound is fantastic, and comfort is good. The detachable cord and 6.3mm jack is nice. The only thing that could be better is the bass response. It is not a huge bass which was disappointing but they more than make up for it.
