Movie synopsis
In 2005, famed New York City filmmaker Woody Allen made MATCH POINT, a murder mystery set in London, starring Scarlett Johansson. Allen remains in London for the follow-up, the murder mystery SCOOP, again with Johansson, but this time he jumps in front of the camera as well. Woody plays Sid "Splendini" Waterman, a pathetic magician who somehow conjures up the ghost of Joe Strombel (Ian McShane), a recently deceased ace reporter who has been given a great scoop from beyond the grave. Strombel's spirit links onto young journalism student Sondra Pransky (Johansson), demanding that she get the story--and get it right. Pretending to be father and daughter, Sid and Sondra get into the good graces of Peter Lyman (Hugh Jackman), a wealthy British lord who just might be the Tarot Card Killer, a madman who has been terrifying London by brutally murdering prostitutes. Against her better judgment, Pransky starts falling for the charming playboy even as she gathers more and more evidence that points to him as the probable killer. Jackman and Johansson have an intoxicating on-screen romantic chemistry that is a terrific counterpoint to the manic energy she shares with Allen. While MATCH POINT was an homage to Alfred Hitchcock's STRANGERS ON A TRAIN, the comedy-thriller SCOOP pays tribute to the master director's FRENZY and NOTORIOUS. Allen also manages to get one of his favorite characters--Death (Peter Mastin) into the film. The score includes works by Tchaikovsky, Strauss, and Grieg as well as swinging numbers by Xavier Cugat and Lester Lanin.

Scoop

Review For: Scoop (DVD, 2006)

Great movie. The movie keeps you on the edge of your seat with the crazy stunts that the two main characters Sondra Pransky (Scarlett Johansson) and Sid Waterman a magician known as Splendini (Woody Allen) do in order to get to the bottom of the Tarot Card Killings. At times the movie seems to move a bit slow but it really starts to pick up at the end. There is a lot of humor throughout the movie. You don’t know exactly what is going on until the very end. Great performance by all involved.

A delightfull movie

Review For: Scoop (DVD, 2006)

I recently became a hard core Scarlett Johannson Fan. This is the second film I have seen with her directed by Woody Allen. This is a comedy which Woody does so well. At first, I thought his presence in the film was superfluous. As the film progresses, he becomes more involved with the quest that Scarlett's character has embarked on. The two make a fumbling team of detective/ reporter types who mean to find out the truth behind a wealthy man who is possibly a murdered. The wealthy man played by Hugh Jackman, is ,on the surface ,a rather nice chap. A romance ensues between Scarlett's character and the suspect. We want there to be a happy ending, but all I will say without giving away the ending is that justice prevails.

Scoop with Scarlett Johansson

Review For: Scoop (DVD, 2006)

Not being a FAN of Woody Allen I nearly didn't buy this movie, but I am an over the top FAN of Scarlett Johansson and was not disappointed with this masterpiece. Even Woody Allen, who plays a fumbling magician, was exceptionally good in Scoop. The ending was "GREAT!" in the words of Tony the Tiger. Mystery, Comedy and Suspense are all there in spades, plus the sensual beauty of Scarlett Johansson. What can I say?

Sweetly Engaging, Ages Well

Review For: Scoop (DVD, 2006)

Like many Woody Allen films, this one had to percolate down through my consciousness before I wanted to own it. The plot, which hinges on the efforts of a murdered man's ghost to brings his murderers to justice through a student news reporter, is neatly balanced between fantasy and farce. Allen's sidelining himself from the romantic interest is nicely turned. While not in the class with his best films (cf. Hannah and Her Sisters, Annie Hall, Alice, etc.) it is a deftly turned bittersweet comedy, which I will continue to go back to. For me, even Allen's failures are more interesting than most directors' successes, and his range is phenomenal.

Woody Allen is hilarious!

Review For: Scoop (DVD, 2006)

I like to refer to Woody Allen's humor as "sophisticated" as opposed to the typical "below the belt" sophomore humor of popular movies like Ricky Bobby etc. If you are put off by toilet jokes, farting, and just plain dumb comedies, then check this one out. It will have you laughing out loud. Woody is at his neurotic best and Scarlett Johanssen is great in this first ever comedic role for her. Their on-screen chemistry is classic. I have no complaints about this. It will remain in my library as a classic to be watched at least once a year!
