Movie synopsis
Brian De Palma's blood-and-sun-drenched saga of a Cuban deportee's rise to the top of Miami's cocaine business has become something of a popular classic since its release; it's been referenced in rap songs and subsequent gangster movies and quoted the world over. Despite this lovefest with the dialogue, the film's brutal violence and lack of positive characters still make it controversial and disliked by certain critics. Al Pacino stars as Tony Montana, whose intelligence, guts, and ambition help him skyrocket from dishwasher to the top of a criminal empire but whose eventual paranoia and incestuous desire for his kid sister (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) prove his undoing. Michelle Pfeiffer plays Tony's neglected coke-addicted trophy wife, and Steven Bauer is his concerned friend. F. Murray Abraham, Robert Loggia, and Paul Shenar are some of Tony's sleazy business partners and potential killers. Oliver Stone wrote the expletive-packed screenplay, based on Howard Hawks's 1932 version--which was ostensibly about Al Capone and starred Paul Muni and George Raft. The synth-heavy Giorgio Moroder score expertly evokes the drug-fueled decadence of 1980s Miami, and De Palma provides several of his elaborate set pieces, including a horrific showstopper in a motel room with a chain saw.

The world is yours!

When i watched this movie i sat in total disbelief at the pure beauty of it and when it ended i stood up and clapped as the cinematic class of this movie had pushed it into my top 5 movies of all time. I have watched all the good and excellent gangster movies but this one stood out like no other.
It stood out for a reason. The reason was that it seemed more closer to modern day and didn't just involve italian mob members it involved the crinimal underground of the miami shoreline. The cocaine driven crinimal underworld is corrupted when Cuban Tony Montana trys to work his way out of poverty to be the ruler of the crinimal life in miami. He eventually makes it to the the top by being one of the most ruthless gansters ever depicted on film.

The music is unique and very fitting for the 80s setting given to the film. The music is weird when you first hear as you feel astonished like your in the 80s but you soon get used to it and then love it. It is the basis of what the award winning 5 star game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City used for its soundtrack.

This film is not for the faint at heart as directer Brian De Palma 3 times had the film rejected because it had and X-Rated certificate. He literally had to take the people who give the certificates out to court.

I am writing a scarface review so i am going to have to say it "say hello to my leeetle friend". That is but one of the classic lines in this film and after it you will be thinking that same line over and over agin.

The reason you will not hear this film praised with any awards like academy awards and golden globes is because the critics hated its very grusome betrayal of gangs in miami. Ths is a stupid reason for not praising it as brilliant as after extensive research oliver stone (screenplay) found many stories in miami about chainsaw murders and mass murders.

Al pacino is easily my favourite actor of all time. I loved him in the Godfather and Donnie Brasco but in this he really does excell himself and make a point that he should be definitely held side by side amonst the best actors of all time. Al pacino is envied by the biggest of hollywood stars about this movie as many actors like Bruce Willis and Tom Cruise always do impressions of mob leader Tony Montana

Although grotesquely brutal this movie could teach kids good lessons that crime does not pay as when he gets to the top of the underworld his life coorupts through cocaine and he ends up killing the ones he loves and watching ones he loves die in crossfire.

The Special edition version of the film is worth buying over the original one disk version as it costs the same and you get the interesting techniques used to create this stunningly interesting epic movie.

This film is a remake of the original scarface which if you happen to stumble across is worth buying as it has a different storyline and is acted brilliantly and has some memorable scenes.

Scarface

"Scarface" is one of the greatest of all mob movies. It's an epic crime drama done with style and care. Brian DePalma presents a film that ignites the screen with a great screenplay by Oliver Stone and an amazing performance by Al Pacino. Unlike "The Godfather," which was more about family and relationships between father and son, "Scarface" is an exhilarating and intriguing journey into Miami's mob underworld, seen through the eyes of Tony Montana, a Cuban refugee with some of the greatest lines in movie history. The degree of excess here is brilliantly done and adds even more realism to a great work. DePalma shows a wonderful touch of style in the sets, costumes, cars, even in the violence. Look at the brilliant eye for composition he shows in a scene where an assassination attempt is carried out on Tony in a nigh club. The movie is full of that Latin style and intensity. The screeenplay By Oliver Stone is brilliant because it's complex in the way in which we are not just interested in the action, but characters and events as well. We really care about what happens with these people, least of all Tony. Pacino gives one of the greatest and most intense performances, always believable. He steals the show entirely through his accent and facial expressions. The action sequences aren't dim-witted, but smart and stylish. "Scarface" vibrates with style and realism like few gangster dramas have. It stands as a masterpiece. One of the greatest crime pictures of all time.

Chronicles the rise and fall of Cuban Tony Montana

Directed by Brian De Palma. Written by Oliver Stone. Starring Al Pacino. An initial "X" rating due to its depicted violence.

It wasn't easy, but the efforts of all those involved--from the screenplay, directing, to the superb acting, played a role in making this film in a classic long after its theatrical release.

This remake of the 1932 Howard Hawks film, chronicles the rise and fall of Cuban political refugee Antonio "Tony" Montana as he takes the Miami cocaine trade by storm. In the end, Montana loses everything (wife, sister, best friend, and ultimately his own life) as he is consumed not only with his greed but supply of drugs as well.

Not Worth It

"[Scarface] will always be a ladies fear and a man's main ambition of power and dream in their most interim mind" - loco10rules. Huh?

Brian De Palma's Scarface is meant as a cautionary figure, not a role model. There is nothing about him worth emulating. With 218 f-words, chain saw mutilations, numerous shootings, drug abuse, rampant sexist remarks and gruesome betrayal, this movie is a story in how NOT to live. If you haven't seen it, you aren't missing anything. Nobody in their right mind wants bloody images like the ones in this film floating through their head.

The entertainment magazine Variety wrote Scarface is a "modern morality play." Tony Montana is a drug lord, a sort of vicious, perverted King Midas. Everything he touches turns to money or (cocaine) and dies. He destroys every life he comes in contact with: family, friends, and business associates. The climax of the film is Tony Montana, the antihero, dying alone after snorting a mountain of coke, killing his own sister, and falling into a pool filled with blood. Scarface is a depressing tale that cannot redeem itself. While there is strong character development, the darkness far outshadows any light. The innocent die violently; the evil die violently. Nobody wins. End of story.

The Midas Touch in Reverse

Review For: Scarface (DVD, 2006, 2-Disc Set, Platinum Edition)

People referred to this movie throughout college. There were posters, songs, quotes from the movie ("Say hello to my lil friend!") and comments about Al Pacino dropping the f- bomb. After years of second-hand hearsay, I finally watched the movie.

What a waste. Al Pacino's character, Tony Montana, was talked about like some kind of hero, and yet he dies alone, snorting a mountain of coke, killing his own sister, and falling into a pool filled with his own blood. This is what all the hype was about? It's sick. Like the magazine Variety wrote, this is a "modern morality play." Tony Montana is a drug lord King Midas. Everything he touches turns to money or (cocaine) and dies. He destroys every life he comes in contact with: family, friends, business associates.

Oliver Stone's Scarface is meant as a cautionary tale, but it is scary how many interpret Montana as a role model. There is nothing about him worth emulating. With 218 f-words, chain saw mutilations, numerous shootings, drug abuse, rampant sexist remarks and gruesome betrayal, this movie is a story in how NOT to live. If you haven't seen it, you aren't missing anything.
