Reviews & Research

CNET Editors' reviewGood

  • THE GOOD

The Samsung SCH-u740 has a sleek and attractive design with a cool, dual-flip hinge that lets you view the display in either portrait or landscape mode. It has a QWERTY keyboard, access to Verizon's V Cast offerings, and a full array of multimedia goodies.

  • THE BAD

The Samsung SCH-u740 lacks a dedicated camera key on the phone's exterior, and the video quality is mediocre. We're also not fans of the touch screen music controls.

  • THE BOTTOM LINE

The Samsung SCH-u740's dual-flip design and QWERTY keyboard are great for text-messaging fans, and its impressive feature set seals its deal as one of Verizon's strongest multimedia handsets.

Going Retro: Can't go bad with the Alias!

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.
Review For: Samsung SCH U740 - Silver (Verizon) Cellular Phone

After a year of having a touch-screen smart phone, whilst considering my College expenses, I've reconsidered from a data plan to a normal talk-text plan while getting a "new" phone. I landed upon this cell phone; it's dual flip (how awesome is that?!) so you can text with a QWERTY board one way, and dial/call someone the other. It's very sleek, slim, and stylish. It may be a little old, but although the era has taken a turn for the Smart Phones, going back to this nifty clam-shell phone certainly is a decision I do not regret!

Love, love, love this phone!

Lots of great features with this phone!

Pros:
**Has the Bluetooth Wireless!
**V Cast Music and Video!- love the fact that I can use my phone when I exercise in the morning and don't have to bring my iPod…and can still use my phone!
**3D Games - hubby loves this!
**Online - needed for my business...even if I didn't though its still a great feature for this phone!
**Easy Picture taking!...with the phone flipped in either direction…don’t even have to search for “take Picture” through the phone…there is a button to push and the camera starts immediately!
**Great for people who text quite a bit because when the phone it flipped to it's side, you can text like a crazy person on an actual key board! Love the I can send a picture along with a text message as well!
**Love the Camera-Camcorder - again easy to use and access.
**Comes in the black or champagne...I have the black my sister has the champagne...after 2 months, both of our phones look like new (no scuffs, scratches...etc.)
**Flip the phone to the side when someone is calling or when making a call and it goes to speaker phone method! Gota LOVE that!

Cons:
**Buttons are a bit small if you have large fingers or if you have a hard time seeing normal keys. This phone wouldn't work well for someone who makes calls without glasses...since the keys are not large and there are quite a few of them...but the numbers appear large enough on the screen that you can be sure you are typing in the right keys.
**I am left handed too and sometimes when I flip the phone open when someone is calling, it opens to the side and I wind up going on speaker phone, but when I open it with my right hand I don't have that problem...but really, it not a big deal and in fact, I love the ease of using the speaker phone., so really this is not a con, but just something I thought I would mention!

So why did I buy this phone? The features of course!

Update: 9/10/07
I went to Starbucks this weekend to get my regular Caramel Frappuccino. I dumped my ENTIRE drink head first into my purse. I freaked knowing my phone was inside my purse. I pulled over, grabbed for some tissue in the back seat and quickly pulled my phone out of the slushy coffee mess, whimpering as I didn't know if it would still work. Cleaned and dried it and called my husband hopping it would still work. It WORKS! It still works!

Needless to say, I cried on the drive home from Starbucks because everything else in my purse from money, checks, and a book of stamps where just a mess!! --Hey, but at least my phone was safe!

Buyer Review of Samsung SCH U740 Alias

Everything about the phone works exactly the way it should. It has a good camera for a cell phone(w/ flash) and the full qwerty key board is convenient.
There are however, some draw backs to it. I have had the phone for about a week now and there is already play in the hinge when flipping the phone between landscape and flip. Another problem is simply a design flaw, the keys on the phone are much too small and can be challenging to use at first, after using it for a week I've already found that I've been able to get used to them- it just takes time.
In conclusion it's overall a good phone with some downfalls. If I had to choose between this phone and my former Motorola w755(which was cheap, flimsy, and annoying) I'd definitely choose this one.

Worth every penny

I had my previous Samsung phone for over 5 years, and it finally kicked the bucket when the phone literally broke in half in my purse. I figured it was time to invest in something a little newer. A friend of mine had the Samsung 740, or now known as the "Samsung Alias". It always seemed like an interesting phone to me, so I put in the money to buy one. (On eBay, no less!)

The market price is about $350, but I got mine for $180 here. It was worth every penny! I haven't had malfunctions with anything so far, so I will list the features I like and dislike.

The Good:
- Coolest thing is probably the way it flips horizontally and vertically
- Texting is made much easier with the keyboard feature
- Video and camera are always handy
- Great for a plethora of games on your phone
- Comes with a hook to hang cell phone charms on (that is important to me!)
- Vcast enabled
- Able to customize your own ring tones
- Excellent battery life. (I've gone 4 days or more, I think, without having to charge. That is, of course, if I'm not talking on the phone the whole time)

The Bad:
- The keyboard is on the small side, though it's what you would expect with the size of cell phones
- I'm always a little worried that the way it flips back and forth will fail and break some day
- The cover for the charger insert seems very fragile

Overall, I have very little complaints. It's been a great phone so far and a worthwhile investment. If you're on the verison network and are a text-messager, this is a GREAT phone for you. I wouldn't recommend it to someone with poor eyesight, in that the keys are rather small and my parents have a hard time reading the letters. Texting takes some time to get used to on the phone, but it's a lot of fun. You can customize a lot of the features and programs you want via downloading from V-cast, but it's much more entertainment related. I wouldn't use this phone as a business-only device.

Samsung SCH-U740 compared to the SCH-U900

Why you bought it
My wife & I had identical Samsung SCH-U900, purchased from Verizon for their good cameras, email capabilities and Verizon's coverage here. We also wanted flip-phones, because of the physical abuse I give to things in my pockets.

My wife wore out the connection through her swivel-hinge on the SCH-U900 from switching between camera & phone too much, and we were two months from the end of our Verizon contract, so Verizon gave us the options of paying full retail for a replacement phone, or signing up for another two-year contract. Neither of those options worked for us.

So, I bought my wife a new 12MP point-and-shoot camera, and went looking for a Verizon-compatible phone with email capabilities and some kind of camera for photo-texts.

What you like most about it
I loved the SCH-U740's QWERTY keyboard, and everything else looked good, so I nabbed it used from a very good eBay seller at a reasonable price. Operationally, it's even slicker to me than the SCH-U900.

What you dislike about it
Neither phone
The camera isn't anywhere near as good as the one in the SCH-U900. But, I liked my wife's new point-and-shoot camera so well that she got me one for Christmas, so I wish it was easy to trade phones with her while keeping our telephone numbers, because although the SCH-U900 takes better pictures, its image-capture speed is LAME, and the LED 'flash' is almost useless. Plus, my wife doesn't appreciate the QWERTY keyboard, and still texts using the multi-purpose numeric keys.

Whether or not you would buy the product again
I love how compact and easy-to-use the SCH-U740 is. The camera is usable within its limitations. It has Verizon's coverage, but it also has their corporate attitude. If we were staying with Verizon, I would get the phone. But phones with SIM cards are MUCH more attractive to me.
