The SAMSUNG SCH-U340 is a great entry-level phone for people that do not need all the bells and whistles; perfect for the preteen or grandpa. It is a simple flip phone with a VGA camera and texting, nothing else. Phone is compact and lightweight, has an internal antenna, with the camera lens at the top of the front flap. Fits nicely in pocket.
External display (size of a postage stamp so grandpa had better use his glasses) shows date, time, battery life, signal strength and caller ID. Screen is monochrome and acts as an acceptable viewfinder for the camera, which does not have a flash.
Internal display is about 2 inches and is a basic 65,000 color screen. Color resolution is okay but graphics are a little course, but display overall is respectable. The SCH-U340 uses a Samsung menu rather than a Verizon, which I rate as a plus. You can change the color, font style, contrast, and the backlight time. Controls are easy to understand. Keypad buttons are slightly higher than the surface of the phone with large backlit numbers. I like the fact there is a little separation between the buttons. Overall, it makes for easier use by a younger person or older person, who has a bit of a hand coordination problem.
You can enter 500 contacts into the phone book with room in each contact for 5 phone numbers and 2 e-mail address. Your preteen will love this feature; grandpa will care less. Other features are vibrate mode, text messaging, voice command and dialing, calendar, 3 alarm clocks (good for the preteen so she is not late for class or to remind grandpa to take his meds), a calculator, notepad, speaker phone and “ICE” (In Case of Emergency contacts – perfect if grandpa wanders off.)
Reception is good (this is a tri-mode phone), voices loud and clear. Speakerphone is a touch off, but adequate. Battery life is what you make it, like on every other cell phone. You should be able to pick up this discontinued phone for about $10.00 to $15.00. Do recommend you buy a new battery, as used batteries can be very chancy. For what it is, an older basic camera phone, I give it 3 stars out of 5.
My grandpa had cingular (motorola v551, then the c139) just basically needed a simple phone and he didn't like cingulars service (just needed an emergency phone and Cingular AT&T) was not doing good in his area, so we switched his network to Verizon and he got this.
One thing I noticed (since I personally owned one) is that the phone has updated firmware from the last time, it seemed my phone said like verizon at the top and his doesnt and has samsung, They looked the same, so I know I am not getting the model wrong.
Really solid feeling, I think the camera is 1.3 or might be VGA but still takes good pictures and was one that was the free if you sign up to the new contract for 19.99, good if you need basic.
Have used this model for years. Excellent product. Holds a good charge. Have received signal in most places. Only way out in the country when we hit a very very low spot do I fail to receive signal and it picks up again when we move to higher ground. Verison has provided excellent service in the North Texas area where this I have used this phone. Also have traveled out of state and had no problems with reception. I have found this model to be much superior to the cell phones I used prior to getting this Samsung.
The Samsung SCH U340 phone is a good basic reliable phone. It is simple and easy to use, and has good reception. It is lightweight, and has a decent battery life. The camera is okay too. Just a good basic inexpensive phone.
I bought this on a whim, my phone died and I needed a cheap solution and fast without signing a dreaded contract. I got very lucky with my choice. I am very pleased with this Samsung "Snap" as it is called. I especially like the improved reception with this phone, it gets clear reception in areas my other phones never have, and this is very important when you live literaly in the northwoods of Wisconsin. I wanted a plain/simple phone, which this is, maybe even too simple-I would like to be able to set the primary buttons to what I want and there are little options, phone book is a little un-friendly as it doesn't show number without clicking into another screen. However, the reception superiority compared to that of other phones makes up for everything that it is lacking, and believe me I have tried SEVERAL other phones. THIS IS A VERY NICE LITTLE CAMERA PHONE.
