Four years later, I bought another one. Why?
#1: Durability without being a "construction site" phone. I bought my first Samsung SCHA930 four years ago, brand new for around $250. I had dropped it on concrete countless times, and after four years of this (and a very scratched surface) I never even worried about such events. The screen and buttons are well protected and the hinge is rock solid. It finally pooped out when I pulled the cable on the charge port the wrong way. My fault. This is always a potentially vulnerable part of any phone.
#2: Good camera. Okay, it's only 1.3 megapixel... More than adequate for auto accident evidence or pictures of your friends to share. What self-respecting pro photgrapher uses a cell phone anyway? You get a good image and more megapixels would be overkill for most users. And, it can take LENGTHY videos, even without added memory.
#3: Compact. For a phone of its age, it's nice that it doesn't have an external stand-up antenna. It slips into a jeans pocket or shirt pocket without poking you.
#4: Bluetooth works very well.
#5: MP3 player. Back in its heyday this was marketed as a music lover's phone. Okay, the feature is there but MP3 playing is now quite common in cell phones and getting music onto it from a computer is a bit cumbersome without a USB cable. The best way to go about it is using a mini SD card. There's no good indexing interface for music on the phone. But, this phone would be great even if it didn't play music. I use other devices for music.
BOTTOM LINE: If you're not all about texting with a QUERTY keyboard, and if you just want a low-price compact phone with good features and reliability, a used one of these is a GREAT alternative to buying a brand new "cheap phone". You'll pay less, look cooler, and it'll still last longer than a brand new no frills phone.
PRO: It's Verizon. A very reliable network.
CON: It's Verizon. A very expensive network.
My gpa owned this phone and got it wet and even drove off with it on the back of the golf cart, it scraped it a little and it put a small crack on the screen but it still worked. He ended up getting an upgrade (u430 with not as many features) and giving this to my uncle who previously finished off a razr (he works at a factory) went with my gpas a930 and lost the back door got it wet a couple times scraped it ALL up and it still works. I gotta say we weren't thinking it'd be this tough. Only because you could sometimes feel the spring when you closed the phone and it was a free phone from Verizon with a new contract. But it's been nearly 4 years since original purchase (i believe we got it launch date ( and the red phone is still working. The only person that didnt like the phone was my gma when she washed her chocolate because it didnt do the standard text beep and she was always launching web by hitting ok because she was used to the layout of the trackpad on the chocolate. The red phone was extremely tough. I think if there is a chance you can get it, you might want to get it, that chance right then, because it's not bad. Its got features you'd need web video microsd and vcast music. A phone from 2005 2006 thats impressive. I think this'd be the best phone that is durable and water proof next to the Casio gzone line of phones. This thing is awesome. You'll get your negative reviews on this phone, but if someones read this far, they'll know we liked it and'll purchase it (i hope) it is a GREAT phone. I owned it for a short time and loved it, it was passed around and it was dropped by all of us.
I would most likely get this phone if you have a kid that breaks phones or needs a phone or wants one. It's also good for older people because it doesn't offer that many features out in the open. Ya theres cool features but there all around the phone. Dialing and texting is easy. This phone is awesome
Cons: Nothing at all
I love the fact that the phone has removeable memory AND a camcorder with the camera, and that it has an mp3 player. I don't really care for the camera as I would prefer 3 megapixal or higher, but most phones with that quality of camera require a data package purchase with verizon so I'm stuck with the lesser camera. I bought the phone because it was a GREAT price given all the features.
I've had this phone for coming up on a year now and couldn't love it more. I purchased it as I had previously had a Samsung Camera Phone that went through the wash and still worked for 2 years after. My new SCH-930 I've dropped, caught my 1 year old daughter chewing on it and my 6 and 8 year old boys have used it as a puck for kitchen table hockey. Battery lasts forever unless you use the speakers for the MP3 function. Put the music on headphones and it will last 10 times longer. I'll probably stick to Samsung for quite some time.
i found it used on ebay for pretty cheap so i bought it to replace a differant phone that broke.
this phone is much more durable. had an mp3 player. video and still camera and speaker phone.
down side is only certin ring tones will ring and vibrate. also no external screen but do have a small external info display. the camera is upside down when you hold the phone normaly and try to take a picture of someone. flip the camera around to face you and it's fine. but 99% of pics are not of yourself.
