Samson R21S Microphone
Created: 04/02/09
This mic is patterned after the legendary Shure SM58. Some might call it a clone, but it is not a clone in the absolute sense. Performance-wise, it is not nearly as good as the SM58. Construction-wise, I believe that it is every bit as good as the SM58. Price-wise, this mic goes for a fraction of what the SM58 costs. I purchased this mic knowing it's qualities and value/price beforehand, with the intention of donating it to my church choir after one of our mics "disappeared." The "S" in the model number indicates that the mic has an on/off switch. If you don't want/need a switch, check out the R21. Samson has another model, the R31S, and the R31, which is the same mic, but with a black grill instead of a silver grill. I recommend either series of these Samson mics for any type of vocal performance/band/church/DJ use where economy might be a factor/necessity. If you are in a touring band or something like that, then you probably have no need/desire to economize when it comes to microphones, so you will not be buying this mic. Based on my experience, if you plug a Samson R21 and a Shure SM58 into your board, and set the channels up identically, the tonal qualities are very similar, but the Shure mic will be louder in volume. In our church set up, you have to be right on the Samson mic for solo singing, whereas with the Shure, you don't need to be quite so close. The mic that I purchased came in a point of purchase cardboard box, complete with mic clip and an 18 ft. XLR x 1/4 mic cable (although we use XLR x XLR, so we will probably never use the cable). I hope this review helps you in your decision making!

The mic is pretty stable, but the on/off switch is internal and you have to unscrew the unit to flip it on.
Good sound quality though.

I wouldn't have considered buying such a low-priced microphone until I read other people's very enthusiastic reviews. I am very happy with this mic. I have others which cost over a hundred dollars. This one rivals their sound quality although it is slightly less sensitive. If you are on a budget, this is the perfect mic for you.
