| In South East Asia, a revolutionary army has seized control of a country bordering one of the worlds most vital waterways; threatening to disrupt he global economy. Your mission is to step into the well-worn boots of the Ops Com, a NATO Operations Commander of an elite, five-man squad. You must venture deep into inhospitable jungles, city streets and crumbling urban ruins to engage an army of rebel fighters and discover their plans. Although you are vastly outnumbered, you are armed with the latest weaponry and your men are second to none -- but do you possess the stealth, speed and tactical thinking to lead them to victory? Time is not on your side: you have just six days to complete your mission. To emerge victorious, you must lead from the front, maintain control of the situation and fight with sheer intensity. The defining tactical shooting game franchise continues with SOCOM 4, created by the original design team at Zipper Interactive. A totally overhauled single-player mission structure will put players on the battlefield with more control than ever before, while the 32-player online combat scenarios will test every gamer's fortitude in battle. The game also allows the use of the PlayStation Arc for precise aiming via the motion controller accessory. | |

I've played every SOCOM game version on every platform there is out there and I have to say unlike any of the others I was impressed with the graphics, too bad it ended there. I was very let down with this one, I don't know what other reviewers were thinking when they over-rated this one(I see an awful lot of 4 & 5 star reviews), but I wasn't thrilled at all. First off there are only 14 very short missions and some seem to be exactly or very close to the same as the last mission unlike most of the older SOCOM's that gave more, longer mission which were all very different from one to the next. Some of the other SOCOM's gave as many as 20-22 missions, with only 14 on this one and some pretty much the same I was bored! I beat this game in just under 8 hours, it would have been even shorter had I skipped the cut scenes. Also, there we're too many lame missions where you just crawl around and recon enemy camps and or bases without shooting/killing anything, which I found quite boring for a shooter/war game! It's also a pain unlocking most or all of the weapons, and you start off with weak junk! Too many long, drawn out cut scenes. For the price of the game (new) you get very little bang for your buck. I wouldn't recommend this SOCOM since I found it boring, short and lame.
Though it has a long history of bringing tactical third-person shooter action to Sony systems, the SOCOM series' debut on the PlayStation 3 failed to fully capture the excitement of its predecessors. Yet while SOCOM: Confrontation disappointed, SOCOM 4 delivers. The substantial campaign makes good use of setting and characters to create an engaging tour of duty in which squad tactics play a nicely balanced role. The online cooperative mode lets up to five players band together for stand-alone missions that can offer a serious challenge and engender a good sense of camaraderie. Those looking for competition will find plenty to like in the online multiplayer, where up to 32 players compete on large, well-designed maps in a variety of game types, including tense variants with the classic SOCOM rules that disallow respawning in the middle of a match. Both single- and multiplayer do have some issues, including imperfect stealth action, visual oddities, and intermittent network problems. Fortunately, these limitations don't spoil the fun, and SOCOM 4 makes it exciting to experience what each mode has to offer.
First off, this is nothing like the other Socom games made by zipper. The feeling is not an improvement. With that said, for a third person shooter it is very fun and addicting to play. the graphics are outstanding with the sounds and weapons from the original socom. There are no handguns tho which to me is a flaw. You can equip your person with two primary weapons and some other small tactical equipment like frags or mines. However, the gun upgrades work by a different system than usual. In order to upgrade the weapons like sights and grips exct you must use that weapon for so many points before you can add attatchments. It makes it a little harder to get a comfortable setup at first but does help you learn the weapons and how they shoot differently. This is a good game, its not amazingly great but it is fun to play. If you are a fan of the previous Socom's made by zipper this is not like them and not for the better.
SOCOM 4, like any new game in a series that has a near-and-dear fan base, is going to rub some people the wrong way. But it's really not a bad shooter; its biggest issue is going to be whether there's a there, to quote Gertrude Stein. Can it attract new fans without alienating the old ones, and still have something interesting to contribute to the genre? My sense is that it can't and that it doesn't, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth checking out. Just wait for the price to drop a bit -- unless you really like Scottish girls telling you what to do in mission briefings. Then buy it immediately.
I like the graphics. It takes a little getting used to from the PS2 version. I am still trying to figure out the best tactics and guns to use in different places and missions. It will take a little time to adjust from playing on PS2. I was thinking about getting the rifle to go with the game. I think it might be a little easier to aim when shooting the bad guys..
