Audrey Hepburn is magnificent in this movie. She plays Princess Ann, who leads a boring life as a princess, and so decides to escape for some fun while in Rome. She is found by Joe Bradley, played by Gregory Peck--also magnificent in his role--not knowing her identity at first. As a reporter who was scheduled to have a group interview with the princess, he finally realizes who she is and makes a huge bet with his boss that he can get the story of the century from the princess. What actually happens is he falls in love with her, and thus he would never embarrass the Princess by reporting on her unapproved "holiday."
Even though the movie is not in color, we are treated to scenes in Rome that you hardly ever hear about: the Wishing Wall, the inside of the Coliseum, a mysterious stone face that is supposed to eat your hand if you insert it in its mouth.
Even though this was Audrey Hepburn's first movie, it won her the only Oscar as Best Actress that she ever received. Eddie Albert, who plays Gregory Peck's photography friend, was nominated as Best Supporting Actor. Another interesting fact is that the movie won an Oscar for Motion Picture Story to Mc Lellan Hunter, who was not really the writer; the writer was Dalton Trumbo, who was blacklisted at this time by the McCarthy machine. This problem was straightened out 40 years later.
Sit back and enjoy Audrey Hepburn at her best (she's always great). This movie is appropriate for all ages and is one that you will want to see over and over.
Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck have an undeniable chemistry in this classic romantic movie. Hepburn sucks you in with her charm and Peck moves the story along with his deliberate manipulation of the Princess. Helping Hepburn with a day of royal rebellion, posing as a fertilizer salesman Peck originally is in it for $5,000 to win a bet with his newpaper editor. That same charm that draws us to love Audrey Hepburn, causes Peck's character Mr. Joe Bradley, to not write the story he had so much riding on. A story of a man's heart and love for a woman he'll never be with, outweighing the convienence of a fatter wallet. It's clean, funny, romantic, and perfect for a first date.
It seems as though William Wyler can never do wrong. His direction was superb and his ability to work well with his performers paid off greatly. No film could have introduced America to the beautiful actress Audrey Hepburn any better. She played the role so well that she won an Academy Award for her performance. Also notable is Gregory Peck's work and the authenticity of the setting (a great depiction of Rome). Highly recommend it!!!
It has no scratches and does not skip at all. It is in it's original case which is also in great condition. The DVD plays as if new. I collect old movies and this is a favorite. The condition of this product as a used DVD us far superior to others I have purchased. The scene in Roman Holiday where Audry Hepbern put her hand into the mouth of truth as Gregery Peck looks on with secrets of his own is priceless!
The remastered version you see is virtually dirt free. No specks on the screen, and a REALLY clean picture. It doesn't look like a vintage film at all! Looks like a Schindler's List (modern movie shot with black/white film). Oh, and it's really a great movie. Younger people who need an entry into older films should check Roman Holiday out. It's a great place to start!
