I have a Roku player and it is a very handy device. A lot of the movies are older movies but I am a classic movie freak. It is not kid friendly which I hate. You have to be ware of what movie you watch with kids around since there are movies with nudity and sex without you being aware. I like the fact every month Roku emails me with new channel listings they have added. I keep waiting for them to add the WWE weekly wrestling on there for my son and then dish network will be history. Also if you like to keep up with other countries news then a Roku gives you news around the world as well as in other languages. You add what channels you want from their listing and you can also look up online some private channels available too. Some free some cost a couple dollars a month. There is also a lot of religious channels on here to, not just christian but also muslim and other religions. Anyway I am pleased with mine, just wish they had a way of blocking movies with sexual content without deleting the whole channel off your line up and more up to date kids cartoons would be awesome. It is growing bigger though each month with new stuff. Another thing is this is great for campers, you can have movies at your campground as long as you have internet access.
This was step one in our process of freeing ourselves from ridiculous cable TV bills.
We are more than pleased with the small size, easy interface (never consulted the manual, it's ridiculously intuitive to use), and clear picture. I should note that we are Amazon Prime members, which means we have access to 100's of free TV shows & movies. Those we don't get for free, we will purchase via Amazon or Hulu and STILL be saving hundreds per year over the cable bill.
I did research on CNET prior to purchase & this was the recommended Roku model as best price for the features. Please note: Rokus do not stream live TV (which wasn't clear to me when I first started researching) - you will need an indoor or outdoor antenna for that.
We will soon activate our indoor antenna (not needed for the Roku, just step 2 of our freedom process) & enjoy calling the cable co. to tell them "buh-bye."
We initially got Roku 2 to save because At&t u-verse just kept rising each month along with all the fees and taxes, we were paying $129/month for only 300 channels half of which were music, at least 20 were in spanish (we didn't understand the language), and no extra movie channels or anything extra in the way of equipment, is was just rediculous. We now pay nothing except $8./month for Hulu Plus and we share Netflix with a friend. That has saved us $121/month.~!!!! Unreal, we didn't even realize how much we were wasting on TV!! We are just as happy with this, actually better now, we choose better what to watch and when!! The best financial move since buying our home!!
I initially bought my Roku, because I was tired of paying the high DirecTV price for service and getting paid programming trying to sell you something, movies that were out dated and repeated over and over, and about as many choices for a quality program as you get in choosing a lunch in a high school cafeteria. In short, VERY FEW!
Since I've purchased my Roku, I have noticed myself spending a lot more time browsing the selection of movies and shows Netflix offers, which my Roku allows me access too. There are no 30 minute programs with 10 minutes of commercials, and uninterrupted viewing.
The produce is working flawlessly since i've purchased it, and I have absolutely no regret.
One other thing you should consider when you purchase a Roku, I (and you) are given the liberty to cut back on your cable or DirecTV costs, by scaling back on what packages you have with them. Because on my Roku, I an saving a little over $40.00 a month which comes to about $500. a year.
Overall, I think if you do purchase this product, you will not be disappointed.
Great little Netflix player. Easily turns any TV in to a "Smart" TV. Roku also has tons of free and payed private channels that are easy to load. Most of the free ones show old public domain shows and movies and lots of B and C grade films but there are hidden gems to be found if you take the time to look.
