An all-star cast headlines this enchanting musical version of the rags-to-riches fairy tale with an effervescent score by Rodgers and Hammerstein. Lesley Ann Warren stars as the downtrodden waif who becomes the belle of the ball when a handsome prince (Stuart Damon) is taken with her. Ginger Rogers, Celeste Holm, and Walter Pidgeon also star. Originally produced for network television in 1965, this version of the tale has become a time-tested classic to be cherished by all ages. Excellent for all ages.
This version represents a straightforward retelling of the classic Grimm's fairytale in which a winsome lass is mistreated by her stepmother and 2 ugly stepsisters only to win the day with the help of a fairy godmother. If you are looking for a way to introduce classic Rodgers & Hammerstein type musicals to your children this is a wonderful start. It is wonderfully clean, not scary and totally transparent. Stuart Damon of soap opera fame plays the prince looking for true love. Leslie Anne Warren plays the lovely, sweet Cinderella (called this because she often sleeps near the fireplace to keep warm). Three classic movie actors, Walter Pidgeon (the King), Ginger Rodgers (the Queen) and Celeste Holm (Fairy Godmother) give tremendous support and round out a wonderful show. Jo Van Fleet is a deliciously wicked stepmother and Pat Carroll (she of the creaking knee) and Barbara Ruick (she of the batting eyes) provide wonderful comic relief. One can always hear that moment when the wicked stepmother tries to prevent Cinderella from trying on the shoe and the Prince yells, "Stop!" All action freezes until that wonderful moment when the Prince and Cinderella are reunited. The music is wonderful, catchy and fun, in particular "Impossible" (sung by the Fairy Godmother while helping Cinderella), "In My Own Little Corner" (sung by Cinderella in describing her world of imagination), "The Prince Is Giving A Ball" (a comic ballad sung by the supporting cast), "Ten Minutes Ago" (sung by the Prince now in love), and "Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful" (also sung by the Prince).
What Fairy tales are made of! A young Lesley Ann Warren steals the show as Cinderella along with Stuart Damon (General Hospital fame) as the prince. Celeste Holmes plays the fairy god mother who grants Cinderella a way to get to the ball. Her two evil step sisters brilliantly portrayed by Barbara Ruik and Pat Carrol, want so badly to be with the prince, but alas a beautiful maiden enters the ball - who can she be? Many memorable songs are found throughout such as "Impossible", "In my own little corner", "Do I Love you because your beautiful" and more. A Great film for the whole family with a classic love story in song and dance. This DVD has special features such as a sing along for "In my own little corner" a featurette featuring Lesley Ann Warren, Stuart Damon and Celeste Holmes and also the filmographies of the stars including Walter Pidgeon (king), Ginger Rodgers (Queen) and Jo Van Fleet (evil stepmother)
For those of you who wonder why Lesley Ann Warren always plays a tramp & if she has EVER played any role that didn't portray her as so, hold on to your hats! Back when she was quite young, she played the title role in Rogers & Hammerstein's Cinderella! She even sang!
This is the middle of 3 TV versions of this musical adaptation of the real Cinderella story. The 2 surrounding it, featured women known for their singing, Julie Andrews(1957) & Brandi(1997). The story is as we've been accustomed to without the Disneyesque animals. It is a musical & there are many wonderful songs that go very well in telling the story. Some are endearing & others quite comical. For a TV movie shot entirely on a sound stage, the sets are quite lavish & beautiful as are the costumes. The cast is very good! Lesley Ann was only 19 when she made this & she is absolutely beautiful! Besides Warren, the cast gets a shot of star power from veteran actor Walter Pidgeon as the King & Ginger Rogers as the Queen, 1955 Best Supporting Actress winner Jo Van Fleet (East Of Eden) plays the wicked stepmother & a young version of long time actress Pat Carroll plays one of the wicked stepsisters. The Prince is played by newcomer Stuart Damon who most soap opera lovers will know now as Dr Alan Quartermaine from "Port Charles" & "General Hospital."
This a truly magical version of the Cinderella story & a sure hit for the whole family!
This has always been a childhood favorite. Right up there with Wizard of Oz! I was very happy to see it for sale on Ebay as I had not been able to locate this version in any local stores.
It is the classic telling of the Cinderella story in a musical format. It stars Lesley Ann Warren in her film debut and lots of other famous actors and actresses such as Ginger Rogers, Celeste Holm and Walter Pigeon. And for you General Hospital fans, Stuart Damon who plays Dr Quartermaine stars as the young prince who falls in love with Cinderella.
A great classic for the young and young at heart.
