Movie synopsis
Based on a best-selling novel by Lloyd C. Douglas, THE ROBE is one of the best Biblical epics of all time. Richard Burton stars as Marcellus Gallio, a Roman who, after leading the crucifixion of Christ, takes home Jesus’ robe and is subsequently torn by nightmares and guilt. A distraught Marcellus makes his way back to Palestine, where a humble attempt to discover more about the man who died by his hand puts him on a miraculous path toward redemption. Originally released in 1953, this crisp and vibrant film was one of the first to be filmed in beautiful, expansive CinemaScope. It was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best (Color) Cinematography, Best (Color) Costume Design, and Best (Color) Set Direction-Art Direction. Jean Simmons, Victor Mature, and Jay Robinson offer stellar supporting roles.

A classic in Christian cinema.

Review For: The Robe (Blu-ray Disc, 2009, Checkpoint; Sensormatic; Fox Grandeur Version Widescreen)

The Robe is most famous now for being the first movie filmed in CinemaScope. It was not the first film shot in a widescreen process. There were a few experiments with widescreen in the twenties and thirties, but The Robe was the film which started the boom in the production of widescreen epics. The Robe therefore has a definite and important place in cinema history, but this would mean little today if it were not also a fine film in its own right. In this respect it does not disappoint. The story tells of Marcellus Gallio (Richard Burton), a Roman tribune sent to Palestine who oversees the crucifixion of Christ. He wins Christ's robe in a dice game, little realising the significance it will have for him. Burton is very good in this role and shows what a fine film actor he could be. Victor Mature is also entertaining as Demetrius, Burton's slave and later his friend. Best of all the film shows Jean Simmons at her best, playing Diana the woman Burton loves. My only complaint about her role is that she does not appear on screen enough.

Biblical epics may not be terribly fashionable nowadays, but I've always enjoyed them and The Robe is one of the best of the genre. It describes the events surrounding the familiar Biblical stories using characters from the Bible and fictional characters to flesh out the narrative. In this way it rather resembles how Ben Hur interweaves the Biblical story with fictional events of Ben Hur's life. This technique works well in The Robe and makes for fine historical fiction with a religious theme.

The blu ray edition picture quality is outstanding and shows it to be the epic it is. I hope they give the sequel the same treatment.

The Robe

The Robe was nominated for 5 academy awards, including best picture and best actor (Richard Burton). Burton stars as Marcellus Gallio, the Roman centurion in charged with overseeing the crucifixion of Jesus. But when he wins Christ's robe in a gambling game at the foot of the cross, his life is changed forever. Its inspired story set to a spectacular score, and featuring an all-star cast, including Victor Mature and Jean Simmons, The Robe remains one of the screen's greatest biblical epics.

The Robe

It's a religious epic. A Roman centurian charged with overseeing the crucifixion of Jesus. While gambling, this centurian wins the robe that Jesus wore and he was having flashbacks of that day as Jesus hangs on the cross. The centurian's life was changed forever as he felt the powers of the robe.
It's a very good movie and one would be glad to have it added to their dvd collection!

I used to have the movie, but when I moved I didn't know what happened to it, so I decided to get another copy through ebay!

The Robe is a perfect movie for those who love God

I already have this on VHS but wanted it on DVD due to no room in my RV. It is the best! I love it and have watched it a dozen or more times over the years. It is so marvelous. I don't know if it is a true story but there are many aspects of it that are. Especially about Jesus and the fact that he lived and died for our sins. It is a great movie for drama and history. Love it! I encourage all to view it and pray to Jesus for Salvation.

The Robe in Blu-Ray

Review For: The Robe (Blu-ray Disc, 2009, Checkpoint; Sensormatic; Fox Grandeur Version Widescreen)

I recently purchased The Robe on Blu-ray and was very pleased with the sharpeness of the pictures. I thought that it would be hard to get an old film to look like HD quality. Very good story
