Product description
Synopsis
How did the replication bomb we call "life" begin and where in the world, or rather, in the universe, is it heading? Writing with characteristic wit and an ability to clarify complex phenomena (the New York Times described his style as "the sort of science writing that makes the reader feel like a genius"), Richard Dawkins confronts this ancient mystery.

River Out Of Eden - fine intro to Darwinian thought

I had previously read Dawkins' more recent book, "The God Delusion" and was impressed with his writing style. This first taste whet my appetite for more of his work.
As a non-science major type, I would have been reluctant to jump into a book on Evolutionary Biology, without knowing the writer's ability to present complex topics in a format that is accessible to a layperson. Dawkins did not disappoint, and does a fine job of presenting an over view of Darwinian thought. For those familiar with "The God Delusion", it will come as no surprise that this view is presented in contrast to "Creationist" or "Inteligent Design" views of life's origin and development. At 161 pages for the main text, it made for an easy read. Dawkins also provides a good Bibliography section for those who may wish to dig deeper, emphasizing books that can be readily found by the general public, as opposed to more obscure tomes that may reside primarily in College libraries. Definitely Recommended !

I read it for my IH class

I only read this book because it was a requirement for my intellectual heritage class. I personally would of never read the book. Richard Dawkins is huge on Darwinism & i heard that all his book are the same. Even though I think Richard Dawkins book is biased and unreligious I will link his beliefs to what I observed at the Wagner Institute. For class we had to attend the Wagner institute and then write a report comparing it to the book, River Out of Eden. here is some of my report: On page 42 he claims "humans and monkeys are close cousins, as are horses and donkeys and many other creatures". Looking at the skeletal structures of the human body, the gorilla, the chimp and the other primates, I see why he would think they came from the same "river". Their structures match but the primate’s pelvis is longer and the head is sloped. The primate’s diet consists of mainly fruit, insects and birds eggs, so I guess over time they branched out and evolved into humans. The various species displayed at the Institute, in some way suggest the "branching" Dawkins refers to but it think living adopt to their habitat over years. Even thought these observations may seem like they are evidence relevant to his argument, I don’t think its enough and his beliefs are more based off of inferences.
