Movie synopsis
A Los Angeles special agent (Snipes) must team up with an expert on Japanese culture (Connery) to investigate the murder of a call-girl in the boardroom of a Japanese corporation. The case turns out to be bigger than either of them had thought. Rather loosely based on Michael Crichton's novel.

Editorial reviews

"...The supporting performances are functionally intense, and behind-the-scenes contributions, notably Dean Tavoularis' opulent production design, are elaborate and highly professional..."

Keeps You Guessing

Review For: Rising Sun (DVD, 1999)

I am updating my movie collection and decided to change all my VHS tapes to DVD. I couldn't find Rising Sun anywhere for a decent price, so I came to EBAY. I love Sean Connery and Wesley Snipes. I think they make a good team in this movie. A plus is a little insight into the Japanese culture.

Review For: Rising Sun (DVD, 1999)

This is a fairly solid thriller with great performances from Sean Connery and Wesley Snipes as Capt. Connor and Lt. Smith, two Los Angeles police officers called in when a woman is found dead on the boardroom table of a Japanese company.

When the officers arrive at the crime scene they find their investigations are being impeded by the Japanese who are desperate to avoid a scandal at a time when they are negotiating to take over a major US defence contractor. After a couple of hours stonewalling they hand over the discs for the boardroom's security cameras which appears to show the murder being committed by the victim's boyfriend. There are however the possibilities that it wasn't murder but kinky sex that went too far or that the camera footage has been edited.

As the investigations continue it appears that somebody does not want the case to be solved, Smith finds an allegation of corruption being made even though he'd been cleared of it years before and Connor is accused of being anti-Japanese which is a bit of a surprise given that his police colleagues suspect that he'd gone native while living in Japan.

In some ways the movie seems somewhat dated, Japan no longer has the sort of economy that is able to buy up any Western company they want and technological advances mean that the idea that video can be doctored is no longer shocking but something we take for granted. That doesn't spoil the film though as it is a decent story which is well acted, while Connery and Snipes are clearly the stars the movie includes good actors like Harvey Keitel and Steve Buscemi in relatively minor roles.

The thinking man's action flick

Michael Crichton's RISING SUN (and that's both movie and book) is sheer brilliance. Unfortunately for the average American moviegoer, this is a flick too loaded with subtleties and hidden clues to appeal to someone who's used to more explosions, shootouts, and decisive final confrontations. You must pay close attention to every line of dialogue in order to keep up, and in this the average viewer is going to lose interest. Which is a pity, as you are kept guessing throughout --it's presented in such a way as to enable you to see the point of view of almost every character. Snipes and Connery work extremely well off each other, Harvey Keitel plods through his usual role, Cary Tagawa shines as the unfortunate fall guy stuck between East and West, Tia Carrere proves that she's MUCH more than mere 'Wayne's World' eye candy, and the film's few deviations from the novel do not detract from the suspense --they actually help to keep the plot moving.

Rising Sun (DVD,, 2006)

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

When a party girl is murdered in an executive bedroom in the board room of a major Japanese corporation, LA detective Wesley Snipes is called to investigate. But first he must pick up another police inspector who is a specialist on handling matters sensitive to the Japanese culture, Sean Connery. It is obvious that this case is a lot more than a simple murder. Political espionage and corporate trade wars are all playing out and this entire incident could erupt in an international trade war, with implications of bid rigging and violations of secrecy in the U.S. Defense Dept. This is a good movie

Rising Sun (DVD, 2005)

I like this movie!!! I am of course, a Sean Connery fan..Wesley Snipes, not so much...but in this movie, I think he really can act. This movie has a great story line. There is mystery, culture, intrigue, misdirection and action. Combined with good acting, it has all the components which make a good movie.
