Like those bands, the Animals had strong roots in blues and R&B, but, in their original incarnation, they stayed closer to those roots than their peers did. This definitive compilation, masterfully assembled by the ABKCO think tank of Teri Landi and Jody Klein, shows the tough, uncompromising use to which the Animals put their American influences. John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom" is recast as a raw garage rocker glazed with Alan Price's sinister organ riffs, and the aforementioned "House of the Rising Sun" is transformed from a traditional folk lament to an urgent, ominous piece of churning tumult.Of course, the group skillfully expanded those roots (with the help of some great writers), and turned out some classic working-class-rebel anthems ("We Gotta Get Out of This Place," "It's My Life"). By '67, the original lineup disbanded, and Eric Burdon led a new batch of Animals into a psychedelic West Coast sound ("San Franciscan Nights," "Monterey"). The Animals may not be given pride of place in the rock history books, but RETROSPECTIVE shows that they fully deserve it.

Editorial Reviews
Included in Rolling Stone's The 10 Best Reissues & Anthologies Of 2004 - The Animals finally get a best-of set that shows off the breadth and ferocity of their Sixties-hit streak...
Rolling Stone

4 stars out of 5 - The Animals were the most authentic-sounding R&B band to emerge from the British Invasion of the mid-Sixties....An essential collection.

STILL MISSES KEY SONGS

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

THE ANIMALS AND THE ROLLING STONES WERE MY 2 FAVORITES IN THE MID SIXTIES WHEN I MANAGED TO SEE THEM BOTH LIVE WHEN THEY WERE YOUNG AND RAW. I THINK I LIKED BOTH EQUALLY. THIS COMPILATION IS GREAT AND HAS SPILL THE WINE NOT ON ANY OTHER BUT FOR REAL FANS THERE ARE SEVERAL KEY CUTS MISSING. WHERE ARE "BLUE FEELING", "TAKE IT EASY BABY", "YOU'RE ON MY MIND", "AROUND AND AROUND" (THEIR VERSION IS JUST AS GREAT AS THE STONES), "ROCK ME BABY" AND "SHAKE"? AND THEY HAD SEVERAL OTHER FABULOUS CUTS ESPECIALLY ON THEIR FIRST 3 OR 4 LPS. IT'S A SHAME THAT THERE IS NO BOX SET FOR THIS GROUP(S). STILL THIS IS A FABULOUS COLLECTION.

Definitely worth purchasing

I bought this after I missed seeing Eric Burton and The Animals perform nearby. Great old 60's rock.
Also the addition of "Spill the Wine" to the cd is welcome as you cannot purchase "Spill the Wine" from I tunes other than in this album!

Awesome, crisp, clean sounds of the '60s.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

Although the Animals were not as big as the Beatles or Rolling Stones, they made a huge impact on the 1960's nevertheless. This is an outstanding complete collection of hits that will take you back in time. The sound is crisp and clean and you will be surprised of how many songs did make it into the American Top Ten.
