Movie synopsis
The Umbrella Corporation's Vault, a secret facility located deep below Raccoon City, is sabotaged and a deadly virus is stolen. In the mansion that conceals another entrance to the Vault, Alice (Milla Jovovich) lies on the shower floor, naked except for the shower curtain. She can't remember anything but, as she dresses, she recalls memory fragments. Then, masked intruders burst through the windows. They tell Alice she is a Corporation agent living undercover in the mansion. She goes with them into the Vault to discover who sabotaged it. As they penetrate the Vault, trying to get to the Red Queen, the computer system at the heart of the facility, Alice and her confederates face many horrors--dead bodies suspended in water, blood-red flayed dogs, flesh-eating zombies, and "the Licker," a dynamically mutating monster.Basing RESIDENT EVIL on the popular video game, writer-director Paul W.S. Anderson delivers a tense, exciting science-fiction/horror film. Anderson and director of photography David Johnson shot the movie in rich silver-and-black, so that its few bursts of color are striking--like the image of the blonde Milla Jovovich in a very short crimson dress, with a trailing veil, and black boots dragging a silver axe behind her.

Divest yourself first of Resident Evil cannon...

After Sony and Capcom rejected zombie genre director George A. Romero’s script in 1999, Director Paul W.S. Anderson was selected to take over the reigns of the Resident Evil production which was somewhat inspired by its video game counterpart as well as the Disney fairytale, Alice in Wonderland.

Overall, Resident Evil was an entertaining movie from start to finish as it had a little bit of everything, including a foundation for a sequel (which turned out to be 2004’s Resident Evil Apocalypse). I especially liked the scene transition using a digital schematic of the Umbrella Corporation’s research facility known as the “The Hive.”

Check it out! But if you are a diehard Resident Evil videogame player, you will need to divest yourself first of Resident Evil cannon in order truly enjoy its cinematic interpretation which clearly stands on its own.

RESIDENT EVIL

This was a very interesting movie... they took the story from the first game... and went the "zero" route... it seems this movie is what happened before chris and jill went into the mansion. this movie is house the zombies got out of the "basement". Really good film, Definitely a MUST for any movie fan... and with the Deluxe Edition (green cover) you get an alternate ending... which is basically pretty awesome... i would give this an excellent... but it strays from the original storyline of the game... and i am not a fan of that... same with spiderman 3... so to any writer/director reading this... STICK TO THE STORY...DON'T FANCY IT UP WITH YOUR "HOLLYWOOD"

Fairly Entertaining

Resident Evil game series was popular during it’s time. So when it was made into a movie, there were different kinds of reaction. However, from all of
those reactions, there was a common element that stands out. The movie was entertaining.

I personally like this movie although most game fans were mostly disappointed on how the story was carried out. Those who didn’t have any idea about the game, commented on the lack of thriller aspects since it features zombies and other monstrous things. But then, everyone agrees that the movie has
great action sequences. Milla Jovovich and the supporting characters did a great job in bringing the film into an acceptable level of entertainment. A
little bit of storyline didn’t hurt either. Although it doesn’t follow the game story entirely, nothing new was added and the general concept, look and feel of
the movie follows that of the game. In essence, the movie was quite a decent rendition of the game. Viewers who are looking for a little thrill and good action sequences should probably place this movie into mind.

A secret experiment. A deadly virus. A fatal mistake.

Review For: Resident Evil (DVD, 2002, Special Edition)

This movie means business. Quick disaster with a mystery to it, jarring deaths, naked Milla, all in the first few minutes. It keeps up the pace throughout. In terms of critical comments, yes, you don't really care about the characters, but so what? How often do you really care about the monster fodder in horror films? And true, it wasn't a literal working of the movie, it didn't take place in a mansion and it didn't involve exploring lots of rooms and solving puzzles. That's because it's a movie. A literal translation of Resident Evil would probably be really dull. Games and movies are very different mediums. I don't think some people here understand that. One guy said he thought the movie rocked but after repeated viewings he thought it sucked, and that's a video game player attitude - movies don't have to have good replay value, it's okay to enjoy them once. I only enjoyed Star Wars once, but I don't think it sucked, it just didn't have a lot of depth. Not every movie has to be Citizen Kane.

It was an engaging story, moved like lightning and had some excellent scares.

Resident Evil

Review For: Resident Evil (DVD, 2002, Special Edition)

The Original or first of the Resident Evil series of movies. "Alice" starts
her ordeal in Racoon City when a virus outbreak occurrs in a lab. This
creates a "living-dead" type of zombies that eat flesh. Alice in this edition
battles a supercomputer, the zombies and a team of mercs that is sent to
sanitize the situation in Racoon City. As things go from bad to worse-the
two come together as Alice trys to find memories of the past to add to the
intense situation with the zombies. A great series of movies-if you like the
original (this one) you should collect them all.
