This re-released game (originally from the Nintendo Gamecube) has just grown better with time. Still zesty, this shooter game is not only a must have for R.E. fans, but for any Wii owner. The controls are masterful and using the Wiimote as a gun comes naturally. I would categorize this game into the "horror adventure" genre. You fend yourself from crowds zombies in spooky scenes, and often frantic situations. Even if you've never played a game this dark, you will love it, and perhaps gain a whole new respect for these types of games.
The Resident Evil series was my first Survival Horror. I had played it on my friends console, and immediately I was sucked into the engaging (and somewhat difficult) fight scenes. About 10 years later, with Resident Evil 4, this passion was reignited in me. The time is now, on the Wii, to experience a timeless game that will deliver fantastic gameplay every single second. Also, the game lasts a good while too... It took me about 30 accumulative hours to complete this game on the NORMAL difficulty. And even though I'm an experienced gamer, a lot of this time was spent exploring the map, searching for items, and enhancing my character.
Graphics -- On a Nintendo scale I would give it a 9/10. Definitely ranked amongst the best graphics for the Wii.
Controls -- Basically flawless. Its a little annoying reaching your thumb up to the control pad to change your view, but thats not the games fault. 10/10. The flow of the game is a giant step up from the original Resi 4. Just point the remote and shoot! Using 'B' to aim, and 'A' as a trigger is quite simple. And shaking the remote to use your knife (trust me, you will want to save your bullets) adds to the immersive experience.
Gameplay -- 10/10. You will want to keep playing until you finish, but then your remember that you need to sleep (unfortunately).
Story -- 9/10 The story is what motivates you to survive! And the story is not just there for the sake of being there. Everything in this series is tied together and you get to make the story yourself by playing along. Semi-frequently there are cinematic cut scenes which advance you and hint whats coming up. Of course, there are some weird twists and silly objectives once in a while (very rarely), but what game doesn't. This is just me being picky, most people would be too distracted by the mind-blowing headshots (bad pun) to even notice.
Value -- the best of the best of the best value. 10/10. Its so much fun, and its cheaper than regular retail price.
Sound -- 10/10. Hearing the sudden shouts of zombie-villagers will make you jump! You can hear echoed footsteps in a cave, dull thuds in a courtyard, the clapping of shoes when your in a palace. Also, whenever you hear the floorboards creek in a house, look behind you!!
A highly recommended game! My review may sound exaggerated but its not. Thats seriously just how good this game is. A must-buy!
The only reason to ever buy the PC version of RE4 is if you don’t own a PS2 game system, because the PC version is a direct translation of the PS2 version of the game. That being said, if you do buy the PC version...do yourself a favor and buy an official US version. You can buy it new from Walmart now for $20 and a used one on eBay w/shipping will cost about half that. I’ve learned from experience to stay away from “import” software on eBay, because it’s really just black-market/bootleg software (usually Russian). Not only is it illegal, but it requires the installation of Daemon Tools software to run. One of the main purposes of this type of software is to get around copyright protections. It’s my understanding that some licensed software won’t even run if it detects Daemon Tools on your computer. Also, with black-market software there’s always the risk that it may contain some kind of spyware, malware, etc. Another benefit of getting the official US version of this game is that it already includes the shading patch for improved graphics.
The worst aspect of RE4 is the controls...they suck, but once you get used to this the game is quite good...lots of action and variety, good graphics (except the cut-scenes) and the game is quite long with numerous bonus features. If you enjoy horror/survival games and don’t own a PS2 system...this PC game is definitely worth checking out. Make sure you have the right graphics card first, however, as you’ll need one that supports shading and apparently this game doesn't work with Vista(?) either. A good gamepad would also help, because you can't use a mouse/touch-pad with this game. I prefer using the keyboard though and it wasn't difficult.
I've never played any of the RE games before, but this game reminded me a lot of the Silent Hill games. The main differences being that the SH games have more difficult puzzles and more adult and disturbing themes and visuals. If that's what you prefer, then definitely check out Silent Hill 2...a great game.
GAMEPLAY- 10/10
While the tank like character rotational movement remains, it should serve as no problem for anyone familiar with the series, and is quite easy to pick up for a beginner as well. While it does make close combat difficult when surrounded, since the character rotation is rather slow, it remains a comfortable system, causing only minor problems for the most part. Most notable in this category, however, is the combat system. Unlike other games in the series, the player manually aims their weapon with the aid of a laser-aiming device. This allows for more versatility in combat, giving the player the option of choosing specific targets on the enemy, i.e. legs, arms, head. Another noteworthy factor is the "Action button". The action icon appears to allow the character to engage certain events, such as leaping through a window, knocking down ladders, and kicking enemies. In the same category, these button presses exist within cutscenes as well, forcing the player to stay "on their toes" during cinemas. Enemy AI is excellent as well. The ganados function well in group battle, constantly trying to encircle the player, and go so far as to dodge and duck to avoid attacks.
STORY- 9/10
The story of this game differs greatly from the rest of the series. Though dotted with many familiar characters, the game maintains the feel of an entirely new experience. I would have asked for a bit more thorough explaination of a few points within the game as they relate to the rest of the series, which is why I've scored this section as I have.
GRAPHICS/SOUND- 9/10
The environments in this game are well-rendered as well as interactive, and retain a singular "spooky" ambiance throughout. The character models are clear and crisp, with minimal faults in animation.
The music suits the game and while not brilliant, it flows well with the ambiance of each area. Sound effects are well-done also, though often the constant harping of "Esta aqui!" and the like from the Ganados grows irritating. The only minor flaw I've found is that on occasion the sound effects do not mesh with the number or gender of opponents. When spotted by a female ganado, for example, several male and female voices will sometimes be heard, though only one opponent exists.
PLAY TIME/REPLAYABLILITY- 10/10
Taking 10-15 hours to complete, the game is on par with the remainder of the series. However, upon completing the main game you are rewarded with not one, not two, but three extra game modes. Separate Ways serves to delve deeper into the plotline of the game, taking you deeper into the story and showing the player that not everything that occurs throughout is coincidental. Separate Ways plays much like a second game entirely. Assignment Ada plays much like the main game as well. The Mercenaries is certainly my favorite of the extras, however. With five characters and four levels, it allows for hours of entertainment in itself.
By completing these extra game modes, weapons become available in the main game and Separate Ways, coercing the player into numerous replays in order to obtain them all. This game can easily be enjoyed again and again, for hours at a time.
FINAL RECOMMENDATION- Buy it, now!
If you don't already own this game, I highly recommend that you go out and buy it right this minute. If it is given to you as a gift, whomever gave it to you should become your new best friend for it. So, what are you waiting for? Go buy it. Right now. Hurry up.
Ok, for those of you that are fans of the RE series, I would advise you get this title on a console if you have one. The pc version does not support the mouse as it says it does on the box. So you will be aiming with your keyboard. Also the people that re-coded it for the pc version were lazy and did not change the buttons in the action sequences. so the screen will tell you hit hit "3" which is actually enter.
5- left shift
6-right shift
1-right control
The game itself was great. Nice story line(it's actually pretty long too, so you won't be beating it in a couple hours), great graphics(allthough the cgi movie scenes didn't look as good as the game itself)horrible controls, but lots of replay value, and no horrible acting by whoever does the voiceover for "Jill Valentine". After you beat the game itself you are opened up to new challenges and weapons to unlock.
So I give this one an average score only because of the controls. When you spend a half an hour dying over and over while just trying to find out that "1" and "3" need to be pressed to dodge that boulder coming down behind you, it can make you pretty mad when you find out it's actually enter + right control.
This game get nothing short of 5/5 from me!
If you have not played the older releases of this game (and why not?) the you are in for a treat! You play as Leon Kennedy who was the star of Resident Evil 2, who is now working for the US government and has been sent to a mysterious Spanish village to locate and rescue the presidents daughter, Ashley Graham.
I played the original gamecube version when it was released quite a while ago, I never played the PS2 version so I never had a chance to play the special 5 chapters as Ada Wong, but I can now! You also get a chance to play the special mini game 'Mercenaries', where you must kill as many enemies you can in a certain amount of time in order to achieve the highest score, performing killing combo's also increases your final score. The graphics in this version also seem slightly improved.... My finish time was 18 hours (but dont forget ive already played it through before), for someone new to RE4 id say it could take around 25 hours or more.
Obviously the main feature of the Wii version (and what everyone wants to know about) is use of the Wii's remote and nunchuk controllers, in my eyes the control system is flawless and handles extremely well. But the thing I just cant help but say 'awesooooome' to, is the use of the speaker on the wii remote, the remote will play reloading sounds and shotgun cocking sounds :D Let me guide you through which buttons do what:
REMOTE:
You use the remote to aim your current weapon. It can also be used to reload, you do this by shaking the remote whilst aiming. Shake the remote (when not aiming) to slash with your knife.
B = This aims your weapon
A = Fire (B must also be pressed)
+ = Command Ashley to follow or wait, skip cinematic.
- = Inventory
D-PAD = Shift camera
1 = Map
2 = Pause menu
NUNCHUK:
You use the nunchuk to move Leon and snipe using rifles.
C = Brings out your knife.
Z = Run (hold back then press run to do a 180 degree turn)
I find these controls work very well and don't think anyone will have a problem controlling this game. I guarantee you will enjoy this one and with a retail price of just £29.99 its a bloomin' bargain and should be in everyones collection.
Hope this helped some people make a decision!
