Movie synopsis
Ana (America Ferrera) is a beautiful Mexican-American girl who has just completed high school. Living in East L.A. with a hardworking blue collar family, Ana's graduation from an upscale school in Beverly Hills is heralded as a huge accomplishment. At least, that's the way her English teacher and mentor, Mr. Guzman (George Lopez) sees it. He would like Ana to apply to college as he feels that she is a smart and talented student. But Ana's deeply traditional mother, Carmen (Lupe Ontiveros), insists that she stay at home and help her sister working in a dressmaking factory. Ana is strong-willed and sometimes defiant, but she accepts her mother's instructions and works at the factory, simultaneously applying to Columbia University. The sweatshop that her sister operates opens Ana's eyes to the injustices of business. She sees how her sister is mistreated and underpaid by the Bloomingdale's executives who have contracted her to make their dresses. Dresses that cost the factory $18 to make are sold at Bloomie's for $600, and Ana questions where all that money goes. She also awakens her mother, sister, and coworkers to the idea that they are more than just pretty pictures or wives or mothers--they are real people with a lot to offer and they shouldn't be mislead by the body image promoted by stores like Bloomingdales that mass-produce clothing in small sizes for thin women. In the end, Ana learns a lot about herself, her family, and even romance, on her way to seeing herself as a woman. This beautifully filmed, sweet film is directed by Colombian-born Patricia Cardoso, and highlights the superb talent of 17-year-old Ferrera in the role of Ana.This film was included in the 31st New Directors/New Films 2002 series presented by The Film Society of Lincoln Center and The Department of Film and Media of The Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

Life, the struggle and the Beauty

I didn't really know what to expect when I went to see "Real Women Have Curves" so it ended up being a great and wonderful experience. This is a great movie to watch with the family. It reminded me of my childhood and growing up in America with a Mother who respected and followed the traditions of her culture. She came around, but it was tears and laughter!

This movie gives a comprehensive view of the Hispanic culture and the struggles facing the young women who grow up in this culture. America is fantastic as the "rebellious" younger daughter, who graduates from high school and wants to go to college. Her Mother is a wonderful Mexican "Mama". She wants what is best for her daughter, but it has to be what tradition dictates and it has to be her way.

Ana, finds love and the strength to go for what she really wants in her life. She learns that she can be beautiful whether she's a size 4 or 24. She also learns that sometimes love hurts, but that it is important to be yourself and to follow your heart, and that sometimes you have to love and walk away.

America the Beautiful!

There are far too few films that allow women to "be" who they are--emotionally and physically. Now that America Ferrera has become an overnight success with Ugly Betty, her fans owe it to themselves to check out Real Women Have Curves, the movie that really put her on the map! Will young Ana Garcia find her way to another life in New York City--or be forced to stay behind in her sister's dress factory for the rest of her days? Fun and adventure--and more than a touch of romance--await you when you bring this one home today!

Great Coming of Age Story

This movie is perfect for showing Mexican American culture and the hardships of poverty. I love the mixing of the languages. The characters are in and out of Spanish and English. The story line is relevant and realistic--my students (ages 14-18)loved the film. There is a scene where the main character purchases condoms and another where she and her botfriend decide to have sex. They do not show nudity or have any vulgar sounds, but the scenes may be sensitive for some audiences and you may have to edit or discuss them before they happen. Overall, it is a great movie that adults and teenagers alike enjoy.

Reviewing "Real Women Have Curves"

Well I love this movie because it deals with issues ordinary, normal women have. I also bought this movie to see the performance of Jose Gerardo Zamora Jr. in acting, since I know he is a very talented singer and composer.
