Movie synopsis

A retired pugilist transitions to the business side of the ropes after human boxers are replaced by robotic ones in director Shawn Levy's feature-length adaptation of the TWILIGHT ZONE episode "STEEL." Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) was a true contender when the sport of boxing was changed forever. Now, instead of humans duking it out for the masses, huge, powerful steel robots trade blows in the ring. As a result, former gladiator Charlie has been forced into the role of two-bit promoter, piecing together cut-rate fighting bots from scrap metal as he makes the rounds on the underground boxing circuit. Just when it seems that Charlie has sunken to the nadir of his career, his estranged 11 year old son, Max (Dakota Goyo), offers him the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity at a comeback by constructing and training a true champion. Now the stakes are higher than ever before, and Charlie is about to get a second chance at leaving an indelible mark on the sport he once dedicated his life to.

Editorial reviews

"[A] jaunty, well-built hybrid action/family pic....[The movie] demonstrates the way CGI-driven bot cinema can fruitfully coexist with father-and-son bonding cinema to create charming entertainment -- part warm hugs and part cold clang." -- Grade: A-
Entertainment Weekly - Lisa Schwarzbaum (10/14/2011)

3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Underneath the busy, noisy action beats a human heart pumping with the red-blooded emotions that have worked for boxing films since the original CHAMP first grabbed moviegoers in the '30s."
Box Office - Pete Hammond (10/03/2011)

"Jackman is predictably raffish and swaggering..."
Movieline - Stephanie Zacharek (10/06/2011)

"Levy, with Sugar Ray Leonard adding some punch to the boxing sequences, makes you actually care about the robots..."
Los Angeles Times - Betsy Sharkey (10/07/2011)

3 stars out of 4 -- "[T]he movements of the robots are superbly choreographed....It has characters, it matters who they are, it makes sense of its action, it has a compelling plot."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (10/05/2011)

3 stars out of 5 -- "Jackman's solid, the kid's likeable and the climactic fight is a prizewinner. Only those with a heart of tin could resist."
Total Film - Jamie Graham (11/01/2011)

"The film is punctuated by mechanical fights which are well directed by director Shawn Levy and certainly amp up the excitement, and Hugh Jackman and Dakota Goyo hit all the right notes..."
Sight and Sound - Kim Newman (12/01/2011)

Rocky meets Transformers at Jiffy Lube!

You know where this film is going the minute you put the disc in your Blu ray player. This is feelgood family entertainment, but its the journey, not the ending that counts! It's a derivative of a story "Steel" by noted Sci-Fi author Richard Matheson that appeared on the Twilight Zone TV series where noted character actor Lee Marvin played a fight manager who substitutes for his robot fighter "Battling Maxo" in a future where humans no longer fight. Here the real stars are the Animatronic robot fighters and they are amazing to watch. Hugh Jackman gives a yeomanlike performance and is believeable as washed-out fighter Charlie Kenton (courtesy of training from Sugar Ray Leonard). The lovely Evangeline Lilly doesn't get enough time as the love interest Bailey. The young boy Max (Dakota Goyo)walks a fine line between endearing and borderline annoying at first. The villain is a large black robot named Apollo (sorry,ZEUS!)who looks undefeatable. You can only root for the underdog outdated robot ATOM, who is more expressive than you might think. Just watch and be carried along. It's a great popcorn movie and evenings entertainment. Immaculate Blu ray picture and sound. You won't be disappointed!

Review For: Real Steel (DVD, 2012)
I don't know which I like better. The fact that they've made the game "Blockheads" in to a movie or the charm of the a boy relating to his father.

I liked this movie. Sure it's an old plot, but this new spin is very pleasing entertainment wise.

I loved the machines. I loved that this was a down to earth, not other worldly, story about modern robots. Well done! The special effects seemed real and not digitized. Which really helps the story.

This is the sort of film you can share with kids and get something from it yourself.

Brilliant, edgy with a family undertone. Watch it.

Here's to a robot's long life!

Blessings, Max Rainet.

Review For: Real Steel (DVD, 2012)
If you liked Rocky you'll love this high impact, high tech futuristic, high octane action ride a modern updated version of Rocky~

This takes Rocky to the next level, while tugging your heart strings, With the bonding of father(Hugh Jackman)& son(Dakota Goyo),set in the near-future where boxing has gone high-tech~

Real Steel is without a doubt a crowd pleaser from start to finish, that will have you on the edge of your seat, shouting, jumping up & cheering complete with tears in your eyes~

From the heart warming & tear jerking relationship of father & son with the underdog hit rock bottom boxer storyline where video games & computers come to life with a twist of transformers, rock-m-sock-m robots & the ultimate cage fighter, The special effects are realistic & down to earth & make you believe the 7 & 8 feet tall, 2000 pound robots are real~

Without a doubt we all (kids & adults) had a blast watching this film~

From Steven Spielberg's suggestions incorporated in this film, to the superb acting of the whole cast & stunt doubles, the awesome special effects & the top notch directing, Director Shawn Levy hit it out of the park with Real Steel~

No pretenses here, just good, solid entertainment for the whole family. You won't regret spending 2 hours with this one. It's a kick to see the characters progress as they rise from obscurity to the spotlight and the robotic CG is as good as it gets. Don't expect anything deep or compelling, just enjoy the ride. If I had any detraction to state, it would be that I found the kid to be a little over the top, but not enough to mark the film down. Good fun!

My younger boys can watch this movie all day if I let them. This is an excellent family movie with a relatable story line. At first I thought about maybe it could be violent but after actually watching the movie, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND purchasing this movie for your kids.
