Movie synopsis
A pet chameleon who has lived his entire life in the confines of a cozy glass terrarium discovers adventure beyond his wildest imagination in this animated Western adventure from PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN director Gore Verbinski. When we first meet Rango (voice of Johnny Depp), the sheltered pet chameleon is safe in his terrarium, and embarking on epic adventures through the power of imagination. Then, suddenly, his safe existence is irrevocably upended thanks to a bump in the road that sends him soaring out of a car window and right onto the searing-hot asphalt of a desert highway. On the advice of a wise armadillo who relays the story of the Spirit of the West, our conical-eyed hero sets out in search of a town called Dirt, narrowly escaping a hungry hawk and encountering a self-sufficient pioneer named Beans (voice of Isla Fisher) along the way. Upon arriving in the dusty desert town, Rango wanders into the local bar and convinces the townspeople that he's a notorious gunslinger with a lightning-fast trigger finger. When one of the locals challenges Rango to a showdown on Main Street, the hawk that menaced our hero on his way to town shows up looking for a rematch, and ends up beak-down in the dirt. Convinced that Rango is the real deal, the Mayor (voice of Ned Beatty) decides to name the brave chameleon their new sheriff. But Rango's honeymoon in Dirt is short-lived when bandits steal the town's entire supply of water, and the newly christened sheriff forms a posse in order to get it back. Little do they realize they were all being manipulated by one greedy power-monger who's determined to keep the people of Dirt under his thumb with the help of a diabolical villain named Rattlesnake Jake (voice of Bill Nighy) whose Gatling-gun tail makes Swiss cheese of all challengers. Now, if Rango can just locate the Spirit of the West (voice of Timothy Olyphant) and summon the courage to realize his true potential, perhaps he can finally free the people of Dirt from the tyranny that binds them, and discover his true destiny under the scorching desert sun.

Box Office - Pam Grady (03/01/2011)

3 stars out of 4 -- "Depp possesses one of the finest speaking voices in the business....And he brings all that protean talent to bear on Rango, this ingenious neo-Western's protagonist who isn't just chameleon-like but a chameleon, period."
Washington Post (03/03/2011)

"A marvelous mash-up of Old West and newfangled, RANGO rewrites the animation playbook with its eye-popping critters and varmints..."
Los Angeles Times - Betsy Sharkey (03/04/2011)

4 stars out of 4 -- "RANGO is some kind of miracle: An animated comedy for smart moviegoers, wonderfully made, great to look at, wickedly satirical....Its brilliant and startling characters spring from the screen..."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (03/02/2011)

"Thanks to Depp's own chameleonlike performance and the camaraderie of the cast's voice-recording sessions run like live theater, the script has a lively, improvised feel." -- Grade: B-

"It looks great, thanks to Industrial Light & Magic....RANGO is like nothing you've ever seen."
Rolling Stone - Peter Travers (03/17/2011)

3 stars out of 5 - "The Wild West action is at least as accomplished as TOY STORY 3's spectacular opening...and the staples of the genre work just as well with critters as they do with people."

This is like a Clint Eastwood Western with a cool CGI Clint Eastwood dude.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

At 70-years-of-age, I like original air-brushed animation of early 1940s Disney and Warner’s color cartoon characters, yet in recent years, dozens of excellent pixar type and CGI type animated films hit the big screen. I love Rango. This character, a chameleon that many here commented that this should have been for adults only. My complaint regarding this film is about the sexual shape of the noses of the 3 mole outlaws and others who lived under ground in the closed mine shaft and came to town to rob the bank where the last of the town's water is being horded by the Mayor. So Rango, whose mind is in as many directions as his eyes are, looks at the three criminals emerge from the earth after digging their way into town, and Rango tells them that if they are going to explore a mine, then they need a permit. Now, I noticed this right away and then after I pointed out what I saw to others who also had seen the film or called me back after they had seen the film, noticed, as I did, that the noses on the dirt digging bank robbing moles actually resembled, what appears to look exactly like an 80 to 90-year-old-timers uncircumcised 'penis.'

As someone who has a few thousand personal DVD's and also about 3000 VHS tapes of films and have seen more than 12,000 movies in my lifetime, Rango is great animation, great story telling and is a great adventure. I have two more animated films I would like to recommend to viewers. One such film is "Delgo (from Spain?" The 2nd cool animated film is called, "The Snurks." a time travel film where the heroes and some creepy characters who later become friends, end up on earth where they need to stop a creepy animated character from destroying their world as well as Earth. I liked Hoodwinked, and Steam boy. The latter version I have is the Thai Bootleg copy and then the American released version. The subtitles in the Thai version are in English, Thai, Chinese and other languages from that part of the world. So the English speaking characters speak most of the text of the script while the subtitles say something completely different. For instance, in the Thai Version, Steam boy uses the F--- word on dozens of occasions, yet in the American version, he never swears except for a damn or two. I like Jimmy Neutron, The Roger Rabbit Deluxe edition with the feature length film with original Roger Rabbit opening cartoon in icebox with singing stars instead of birds, and then they also presented the other five Roger Rabbit cartoons, including the one used to open the "Honey I Shrunk the Kids" (I think the 2nd film). I also liked the Incredibles, Monster House, Ratatouille, Over the Hedge, Flushed Away, and I love all three of the “Ice Age” animated films, And of course, "Happy Feet", haven’t seen the sequel. Arthur and the Invisibles 1-3 were also pretty well made. “Over the Edge,” well I loved the possums and the giant dog who leaps from his doghouse into the air and freezes his face "Kung Fu Panda" acupuncture style, as the dog with the frozen face lets out a frozen face look towards the audience while smiling frozen in place as he says, "PLAY?" As a kid, Mighty Mouse was my favorite cartoon at the Saturday matinee. He had two different suits due to two different artists over the years and they are hard to find. The original Max Fliesher Superman air-brushed series of cartoons, usually available at cheap prices, and of course the 2 most popular Popeye cartoons, Ali Baba & Sinbad. mjshroomer

Smart, Funny, Fantastic Movie for All Ages

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

What's not to like about this movie? It's visually stunning, cleverly written, and perfectly voice-acted by Depp and the other actors. The story is relevant as well. The "extras" on the DVD aren't great, but the bits of information about the desert animals that inspired the animated characters are fairly interesting. The material that was edited out, on the other hand, probably needed to be edited out. All in all, buy this for the excellent movie that it is.

love this movie! soundtrack too!

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

Saw this with the kids in the theater and loved it, especially more for me with some jokes that may have went over the kid's heads (like an early on reference to Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas w/johnny depp..) I haven't actually watched the dvd yet but I see there's extra stuff, different ending or something like that? Can't wait to relive again! (even got the soundtrack..)

RANGO! My favorite as well as my grandsons favorite movie of 2011

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

This one goes on my shelf of Favorite movies! The amazing adventure of a jungle dwelling Gecko stranded in a desert. CG special effects are awesome... supporting creatures are amazing. Typical cartoon with great kids story, but lots of adult content. This is one to be enjoyed over and over!
