Movie synopsis
A childless couple unable to adopt decide that a couple who just had quintuplets won't mind if they steal one of the babies. Thus begins the Coen brothers' madcap romp RAISING ARIZONA. Holly Hunter stars as Ed, a cop who is devastated when she learns that she cannot get pregnant. Nicolas Cage is her husband, H.I., an ex-con who wants nothing more than to make his wife the happiest woman in the world. So if she wants a baby, she's going to have a baby, one way or another.Heading up the supporting cast of bizarre characters are John Goodman and William Forsythe as crazy cousins who have just busted out of prison, Sam McMurray and Frances McDormand as Ed and H.I.'s swinging friends, and Randall "Tex" Cobb as a motorcycle madman hired to rescue the baby. RAISING ARIZONA is the Coen brothers' most consistently funny film. Carter Burwell's score, replete with infectious yodeling, is relentless, Barry Sonnenfeld's cinematography is beautifully wacky, and the manic dialogue is the brothers' most quotable. The film is a treat for the ears and the eyes, a one-of-a-kind sensation from a marvelous pair of filmmakers.

You get me a toddler this instant!

Review For: Raising Arizona (DVD, 2009, Widescreen; Sensormatic; Spa Cash)

As far as comedies go, I'm not sure that there's a better one out there than Raising Arizona. Sure, the case could be made for movies like Some Like it Hot or MASH, but this one is a classic, too.

I'll never forget the day my grandparents finally decided to go see a movie after eighteen years. This is the one they picked, and they were sorely disappointed. They couldn't believe how "stupid" it was! Being much younger than I am now, I took their word for it. Then, as a college student, a friend told me how much I was missing out on. I decided to give it a go, and realized (bless them), that my grandparents really have no sense of humor. If I didn't know it before, I have to admit it now!

The movie is all about Ed (a cop) and HI (a convict she meets in the booking room). They fall in love, wed, and soon try to have a child. When Ed discovers she's "barren" (in a hilarious doctor's office scene complete with fallopian tubes model), HI goes back to his criminal ways and decides to take one of the new Arizona Quints born to a local unfinished furniture store owner.
The owner hires a bounty hunter, some of HI's former associates (in prison) escape and try to blackmail the couple, and more hijinx ensue. The movie is brilliant (and perfect) in its timing, narration (by Nicolas Cage), and unusual cinematography (including from the viewpoint of a toddler).

This movie is different, but a gem of a comedy. It is absolutely in the five best comedies of all time.

Coen Magic

The entire collection of the work of Joel and Ethan Coen is a Thread. Each movie they create pays a slight tribute to at least a few of the other movies. Raising Arazona is an Early work. One of the Funniest Films ever made. To me any way.

While the bulk of the film is set as slap stick, there is a Hidden twist of Deep intellect. While H I speaks like a uneducated Hick, his words are quite rhetorical and deeply profound. This is backed by a Soundtrack with the Music of Beethoven, played as if by a back yard junk band. Which continues the facade of depth being cleverly disguised as ignorance

Clever boys these Coens are.

This film as any Coen film to me is near Perfect if you watch it right. When H. I. is offered an lude invitation by his Boss, He slugs him and losses his job. Yet while he is chastised by his Wife for losing his job, he is man enough and caring enough to not even let het know how digraceful this Boss is.

In the end, its as if no matter how far from the law we get... we can find our way back if we try

I am not a fan of the "chase scene". Which in 99% of films is a waste of time or "filler". This film has my all time favorite chase scene.

Enjoy !!!

The "Citizen Kane" of infertility-based kidnap films

If you enjoyed the new TV show "My Name is Earl" (NBC Fall 2005), then you must experience the stylistic (but not plot-based) inspiration: Raising Arizona.

Directed and written with originality, cast with future Oscar winners, this comedy defies easy explanation -- but delivers the laughs. The plot allows you to explore the deeper meanings of parenthood, recidivism, and infertility -- but it is the slapstick humor and writing that are the real payoffs. And, repeated viewings only reveals the dialogue to be more clever (and quotable).

Okay then.

The Coen Brothers are awesome!

I LOVE Nicolas Cage in this, b/c he's so comedic and not worried about his "Hollywood performance" anymore! John Goodman is always funny, especially in Coen Brothers' movies (like The Big Lebowski - another GREAT one).
