Movie synopsis
Terri Fletcher (Hilary Duff) is your typical sweet-hearted, small-town girl and she always obeys her intensely overprotective dad (David Keith), but when she gets accepted to a summer program at a prestigious Los Angeles music school and he forbids her to go, she realizes it's time to break away. With the help of her cool aunt (Rebecca De Mornay), Terri figures out a ruse to sneak off to LA and seize the chance to actualize her musical dreams. Once there, it's harsh wake-up time however, as she realizes being naive, adorable, blonde, un-pierced, and un-tattooed means being ostracized in this too-cool musical community. Luckily John Corbett, a sympathetic music teacher, is there to help, and there's time for romance to bloom with a British classmate (Oliver James). Before this little star can truly blossom though, she still has to cope with the trauma of losing her brother in a car accident (it's left her terrified of bright lights, a real problem for a stage performer) and then there's the matter of telling the truth to her furious father. Duff's effortless charisma lifts this sturdy, comfortably worn-in vehicle easily over the bumpier clichés, and delivers it safely to its inspiring destination.

DVD Raise Your Voice

Following the death of her brother in a car accident, a small-town teenager spends the summer in Los Angeles studying at a performing arts school. Her experience there exposes her to a whole new world and way of life outside the sheltered existence and social circles she's always known. Really a good family film!

Hilary Duff, Oliver James, David Keith, Rita Wilson, Jason Ritter

Raise Your Voice

Fairly typical Hilary Duff vehicle. Well worth a look if you like her - don't waste your time if you don't care for her. Nothing here is going to change your mind about her. Includes a music video of her song 'Fly' which I found very nice, but then I do happen to like her.
In common with most light romantic comedies it is generally upbeat, inoffensive, and predictable. But then, if you were looking for a surprise ending what are you doing with a movie of this genre anyway? The script and even the acting often sacrifice realism in favor of keeping the plot and pace rolling. Some minor cosmetic flaws might bother some - she has far too many outfits, considering the amount of luggage they came in, and her hair looks too professionally done, but again that should not really matter for a film of this type. In some places the corny dialog makes the actors look worse than they really are, with the exception of Jason Ritter who does quite well in his small part. If you were expecting something of the quality of Billy Wilder you are going to be very disappointed.
The portion of the plot not dictated by the genre involves dealing with the loss of a loved one. This element is not badly handled and ties in well thematically with the songs at the end. If you can get past some rather poor editing (see if you can count how many times the microphone magically jumps from hand to hand in the last 15 seconds of the song) the climatic song is a pleasure and manages to pull off an upbeat ending to a somber issue, leaving viewers smiling (except those who do not like happy endings of course). There is nothing really surprising or profound here, but if it attracts your interest you may find it more entertaining than some far more pretentious films.

A touching movie...A movie, dedicated to Big Brother.

Just loved Hilary Duff's role & her acting...feel like crying..heart touching.

Everything so good and well picturized...it is a movie which is based on a girl Terry (Hilary Duff) who is passionated for music but Father is against and Brother helps her and made a DVD of her songs & her talk about what does she think about music & ready to take any challenges for Music & her brother Paul Posts the DVD. Then after a tragic accident, she decided to leave music but suddenly she got a response of her brother's posted DVD..what happens next..watch the movie...(won't tell you the rest of the story..:))

Loved the song "If we never say goodbye My heart won't crumble"

Music is awesome...

Hilary Duff is wonderful.

This is a very wonderful movie. Hilary Duff does it again! She pushes through and shares the message of you have hard times in your life but you have to keep the positives up and remember those that you lost and what they would want you to do to be happy. Simply marvelous.
