Movie synopsis
Daniel Craig orders another martini shaken, not stirred, with this sequel to 2006's reboot of the James Bond franchise, CASINO ROYALE. Marc Forster (THE KITE RUNNER) directs new arrivals to the series Olga Kurylenko, Mathieu Amalric, and Gemma Arterton, as well as franchise favorites Judi Dench and Jeffrey Wright., Daniel Craig orders another martini shaken, not stirred, with this sequel to 2006's reboot of the James Bond franchise, CASINO ROYALE. Marc Forster (THE KITE RUNNER) directs., Daniel Craig returns as 007 in this electrifying follow-up to the critically acclaimed CASINO ROYALE. The film opens with two gripping, back-to-back chases, as James Bond (Daniel Craig) tries to heed the orders of M (Judi Dench) and, at the same time, track down the people who blackmailed his love, Vesper. Bond is still struggling with Vesper's death, displaying a new, ferocious violence in his work, and a recklessness that M would very much like to get under control. When Bond discovers a massive, secret organization called Quantum, he believes it might have been a part of the scheme that killed Vesper. He follows the clues to Haiti, where he meets Camille (Olga Kurylenko), a mysterious, driven woman, whose motives seem unclear. Camille leads Bond to Dominic Greene (Mathieu Almalric), a cold-blooded businessman who appears to be working within Quantum. Greene wants control of a valuable piece of land in Latin America, and is part of a massive plan to overthrow the government. Bond knifes, shoots, and kick-boxes his way to the center of the sinister scheme, and discovers that the plot reaches even higher than he imagined, forcing him to abandon M's orders and step out on his own. Director Marc Forster (STRANGER THAN FICTION) has crafted some truly memorable fight scenes, setting them in the most elegant of locales. Everything is beautifully shot, from Bond racing across the rooftops of Italy, to his showdown at an Austrian opera house. As for Craig, he is once again all cold precision and steely blue eyes. His 007 is positively riveting. He struts determinedly into every scene, ready to display his near superhuman fight moves, or bed a bombshell with merely a glance. Yet, just as in CASINO ROYALE, Craig never lets us forget Bond's humanity. He may fight like a ninja and smirk like Steve McQueen, but beneath his impeccable Tom Ford wardrobe, Bond is still but an ordinary man, wearily battling his own inner demons.

Editorial reviews

"In QUANTUM OF SOLACE, the stunts are as muscular and the film as handsome to look at as the hero who so ably pulls them off."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (11/14/2008)

"What about the villain? One of the best in a while...thanks to a lizardy turn from the great French actor Mathieu Amalric....The supporting cast is studded with equally excellent performers, including Jeffrey Wright and Giancarlo Giannini..."
New York Times - A. O. Scott (11/14/2008)

3 stars out of 5 -- "Here, Bond is sharper, more angular, a tumbling knife of ire and intent. All the same gristle and bristle, but now glinting with inner steel."
Total Film - Andy Lowe (11/01/2008)

4 stars out of 5 -- "We get striking locations and absolutely gorgeous, stylised art direction....Daniel Craig continues to be his own man as Bond..."
Empire - Kim Newman (12/01/2008)

"QUANTUM OF SOLACE is the finest installment in the storied franchise's 22-film history....Director Marc Forster has crafted a stylish 007 adventure that's both brutal and light on its feet."
Premiere - Premiere Staff (11/14/2008)

"The meanest and leanest James Bond film yet, QUANTUM OF SOLACE is a breathless splash of high-speed action that hurtles from one reckless chase to another."
Hollywood Reporter - Hollywood Reporter Staff (10/24/2008)

A Little Bit of Peace...NOT!

As the only direct sequel in the Bond films, Quantum of Solace had numerous challenges ahead of it, many in just being a Bond film, but many also in trying to try directly into a previous film. Quantum lives up to its challenges.

There is one exceptionally beautiful scene in the film, which is the opening in silence with the car chase. It is a wonderful way to draw the audience in by defying expectations of noise. Makes one wonder what a Bond film would be like if it was mostly silent and highly stylized.

Daniel Craig, unfortunately, will likely, through no fault of his own, be relegated to a two-film legacy in the Bond world, and unlike Timothy Dalton, his two are exceptionally good. Too bad that MGM could not keep its financial affairs in better condition, because I was ready for a sequel a year ago, but there may not be another Bond film for several years.

Daniel Craig could be the best Bond yet!

I grew up watching Bond movies and I believe Daniel Craig could be the best Bond yet. I have purchased Quantum of Solace as well as the latest version of Casino Royale and enjoyed them both. Craig definitely delivers a rough-around-the-edges version of Bond. His portrayal of being an agent that is hard to control is dead on. I endured the Roger Moore(who I feel was the worst Bond ever) years when Bond was loaded with gadgets and one-liners, but not all that impressive. I feel Daniel Craig brings Bond back to a believable character with not so many gadgets and a lot more seriousness. He definitely delivers a tough guy image and his rugged yet handsome(according to my wife) looks make him an outstanding choice for this role. In keeping with 007 tradition, this film has a lovely leading lady(that doesn't have a stupid name). The only segment of this film I didn't like was the destruction of some remarkable cars. Sadly, it wouldn't be 007 without some cars getting destroyed, would it? I purchased my 2 disc set from a great Ebayer at a great price, well wort the money. Get your copy, I am sure you'll enjoy it!

How Fleming Would Have Wanted It

Most people who write these Bond reviews grew up watching either Roger Moore or Pierce Brosnan as James Bond. The fact of the matter is that the ridiculous toys, impossible CGI effects and stunts (which plagued the latter Brosnan films), and the general premise that Bond ought to be a jovial character IS ALL INCORRECT.

Upon reading the original Casino Royale, you find that Bond is a dark and brooding character with morose emotional strife. There is no gadgetry or wizardry. It makes perfect sense, then, that the immediate sequel (our aforementioned Quantum of Solace) display a similar James Bond still trapped by his emotions.

So go ahead, all you poor, misguided Brosnan-era fanatics, tear apart Daniel Craig and his two highly successful Bond films. But the reality is that these films were done exactly how Fleming wrote them or would have wanted them. Craig has provided audiences with THE most accurate portrayal of Bond ever; yes, more so than The Great Sean Connery, even.

In terms of this movie's plot, its relevance to today's world issues adds an additional depth to the film. Impressively, this Bond film has also done more on-location shooting than any of the other 21 films in the franchise. You have the Bond Girl(s), a classic plot, a beautiful Aston Martin, and an antagonist right out of the old days. What more could you want? Well, perhaps some popcorn.

Quantum of Solace

Daniel Craig reinvented James Bond in Casino Royale in a good way, so naturally yo would expect big things from this sequal, well not exactly. Taking place 20 minutes after the end of Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace doesn't miss a beat putting you into the action. Sometimes too much action to follow what's going on and the concept and plot get a little confusing and at some points irrelevalent. Seems like more of a set up movie leading hopefully a better third installment. It's not bad. Sure not everything makes sense, and you can second guess a lot of it, but I've seen worse. I bought it because it was $10 new. Didn't buyy it when it was $16 - $24 at Best Buy.

Bond, not suave yet but like batman is getting revamped

Review For: Quantum of Solace (Blu-ray Disc, 2009, Checkpoint; Sensormatic; Widescreen)

When I saw Casino Royale I simply believed that just like Goldeneye they would ruin a good movie by horrible and whimsical sequels with a new bond. Daniel Craig is by far the 2nd best bond; only surpassed by the original Sean Connery. But, just like batman got its revamp and traced back to its origins to help us forget Tim Burton's Batmans, The Bond series has taken us back to the beginning before the suave nature and expertise has set in and has let us see a fiesty, determined and 'loose canon' sort of version of Bond that we can watch develope. The second part of this new Bond series 'Quantum of Solace'...despite its far reaching name that reminds me of some old Imax film title, is an impressive movie with an amazing and reasonable story with great action, great cinematography, and all the while the movie still holds true to the original Bond that made the series so iconic around the world. For any Bond fan or simply someone just wanting to see a good movie that isnt boring watch this movie or buy it for not too much more.
